I was invited by Vic of Sights and Sounds to test drive a FULL HD model from Toshiba, saw it and will give you guys a run down later.

It's been awhile, but it's nice to get back to the hobby.

Toshiba 42RV600

Dvd/Blu-ray performance:

We tested the RV600 via the old pioneer DV610v and set the resolution to output at 1080p. Playing the movie "Armageddon", we noticed that the RV600 brings out very fine colors for an LCD not coming from a brand that is very popular around PDVD. Colors were vibrant without being overbearing, and again for an LCD, this unit is not as flashy bright as Samsung, and may I dare say, it even betters the Panasonic LCD's like the C10 and the older LZ80 in the area of over-all picture definition.

Blu-ray experience is also something to write home about, as details were crisp and clear. However, just like the older Toshiba models (AV500 and the CV500), the RV600 displays a measure of motion blur during fast moving scenes. On the flip side though, if you're watching from 6 feet and above, you'd hardly notice the issue.

Screen uniformity is as expected from an LCD, with minor clouding on the upper left hand corner of the model (This may be unit specific). Back-light bleed however, is very difficult to detect and that in itself, is a welcomed performance.

More later, as I look at PS3 performance along with some media play test=)

@jauncho

Let's go for the Plasma units first...

The RV600 is not as good as let's say the C10 when it comes to DVD use (That's just me, because I really love the glossy nature of a reflective screen). That said, the RV600 is a close performer! Some guys who were with me even prefer the RV600, simply because they can't stand the "reflectivity" of the C10.

For blu-ray, it's still a close run, but I'd prefer the C10 because it does not have motion blur issues.

The FULL HD Panasonic S10 is not a favorite of mine and If I'd really want a cost effective 1080p native T.V, I'd choose the RV600 over the S10 anytime, any day.

For the LCD models...

Sorry to say this but the lower end Panasonic LCD units like the C10 are quite dull and uninspiring...So the RV600 is the very obvious choice here.

How about against it's fellow Japanese brands such as LG, Samsung and Sony? How well does it fare relative to its price?  :)

Thanks for the review Sir Carlo, I really think Toshiba is starting to put out good LCDs at very competitive prices. I have the old model which is the RV500, and am ok naman with the performance.

What am interested now is the ZV600 series, I hope Sir Vic from Sights and Sounds have this series and let you make a review of it. Kasi when I ask for a quotation of these prices, sir vic gave me a very nice price. Problem is I cannot find any stores or appliance centers carrying this models, most of them says thats it's on order basis. Pero siyempre di ka naman bibili ng TV na hindi mo nakikita ang performance.

So if there is anyone here who knows where I can find a display of the Toshiba ZV600 series so I can check it out, would really appreciate it. Thanks again guys!!!

@vx2

For the most part I like the colors of this particular Toshiba over most of the Samsung models I've seen, I even like the colors of the RV600 more than that of my Samsung A650. Higher end Sony models like the W series and the X series will run past the RV600 bec of the latter's motion blur issues, color definition and over-all picture quality still belongs to the Sony X and W. But like I said, the RV600 is a very good contender esp. when you consider the price.

@Windrider

That's right! Toshiba is really pumping out very good sets with competitive prices, too bad, I think they lack the marketing push of other brands!

I'll wrap up the review later tonight or tomorrow morning=)

PS3:

Playing the 1080p native game "Metal Gear" on the RV600 gave us punchy graphics, and vibrant colors. Input response time was not an issue, so the T.V may just be as fast as your reflexes! My only gripe with the RV600, again, would be minor motion blurs - Esp when you play FPS games like "Resistance".

So far, the RV600 is shaping up to be very good alternative for those who wish to check out other brands aside from the heavy gunners we have here...

Media play and conclusion later=)

Media player:

Testing movies on the WD Media Player, RV600 still displays crisp and punchy images, colors rendition is one of this Toshiba's strongest points! Motion blur is still quite noticeable during fast scenes, however, just as I said... you'd have to be really nit picky and very close to the unit to even make it a bugbear.

Pro's
+Good blacks
+Very good color rendition
+Quad HDMI terminals
+Good SRS Stock sound system

Con's
-Motion blur on fast scenes
-Mild screen unevenness

Conclusion:

Toshiba is not a very popular brand around PinoyDVD, but the RV600 with it's bells and whistles coupled with a very credible performance makes it a very strong contender in the 42 inch FULL HD size market! I've done a number of reviews in the past, and I do count this unit as a part of my list of recomended T.V's.

Carlo,

Did you try it out for cable viewing?  For a lot of us, as much as we like DVD's, NMT's and gaming, we still have to use TV's for cable viewing.  How does it perform?  For me, that's why I'm again considering plasma because from the LCD's that I've seen, plasma is still worlds better than LCD (in terms of cable broadcast).  Unfortunately, there are no shops that I know of that have cable broadcast available.

BTW, how much is this set being sold for?

I think cable tv looks much better with Panasonic 42C10 plasma.  I had a Toshiba 32RV600 for about a week before switching to Panasonic 42C10 plasma.   :D

@dips15

I'd still go for Plasma over LCD for cable use regardless of brand, the bright nature of LCD tends to bring out the imperfections of our local broadcast, while Plasma's soft picture definition tends to hide it...

However, with good cable connections, I notice that at over 6 feet, my A650 Sammy LCD does not look any different from my C10,PY800 and G11 respectively.

I got mine! ....after a lot of daydreaming...hehe...

Several reasons why i chose this model versus samsung LA40B530" series 5 and panasonic THL42S10.

1.  Toshiba 42RV600 consumes only 144 watts (take note, its 42 in!)....my samsung 32 series 5 consumes about 180watts......un mga plasma tvs mura talaga, pero nasa 280 watts ata mga plasma and hindi ata puede humiga....kailangan lagi nakatayo.

2.  It's 2 inches bigger than samsung.  No 42in model for samsung.  Para sakin, 2 in is still a big thing for me kasi 5" nalng e 47" na.

3.  Toshiba has 100hz motion rate (pero it's not confirmed) kasi wala sa brochure, pero i was told by vic na 100 hz daw ang sabi sa kanya ng toshiba...sir vic, paki correct nalng kung mali nga.

4.  Mas refine un color ng Toshiba.  Meaning, mas mukhang tao kasi hindi mo mahahalata un line or contour ng subject.  Para sakin kasi nagiging cartoons ang dating pag sobrang kita un line.....(hirap idescribe, hehe).  I noticed, mas maliwanag ang samsung pero masakit sa mata pag matagal....while may autoview ang Toshiba, it automatically adjust the brightness of the screen depende sa lighting environment ng room mo.  Also the reason why i chose RV than CV model.

5.  4 HDMI!  Samsung only 2 and Panasonic, 3 ata.....So 1 hdmi dedicated for my PC, 1 hdmi for my xbox, 1 hdmi for my NMT player....and 1 hdmi sa PS3....solve nako dun hehe...

6.  May PIP pa rin...un mga ibang high end model na lcd tvs, parang wala ng pip...para siguro makatipid sila sa cost.

7.  Although, No swivel for Toshiba...ok lang kasi sa gitna naman talaga ako uupo pag manunuod kasi nakasetup dun ang home theater ko.

8. Meron akong nakikitang kakaiba sa toshiba lately...just take a look un mga features ng ZV models like 14 bit, 200hz, etc...parang may future e so i believe in the brand....

9.  Nagkataon nagdiscount si vic sakin ng price for this model so medyo dikit na un toshiba sa panasonic....hehe...

10.  Lastly.....at dito talaga ako nagdepend....importante talaga sakin ang 144 watts....electrical engr kasi ako...un lang hehe....

I hope this will help you decide sa mga nagd doubt magshift sa toshiba.  goodluck!
