I was just checking out reviews a while ago, benchmarks shows that the 9800 pro is faster than the 9700 pro FYI lang

Hi Chronic, I wrote a guide before on how to setup HD Resolutions on your PC.  Its on page 2 of this thread.
http://www.pinoydvd.com/yabbse/index.php?board=17;action=display;threadid=13274;start=20

Later na yung FFDshow pagnakaka output ka na sa TV mo in HD resolutions.  Pang DVD resolution na yung FFDshow. :)

LCD project finished
Just wanted to update my htpc case adventures :) finally got my DIY LCD on my case.  Here are some pics.

Painted the LCD Area silver, top coated with clear matt laquer for a flatter finish

A closer view of the LCD - cut the rectangular hole with a my Talon rotary tool and used a flat file for finishing.

finally made a case badge :) printed on HP photo paper for a better effect.

By the way I will be putting up a website soon, all about HTPCs Setup, Modding, My DIY Projects, maybe links to HTPC resources I find useful.

I have a temporary URL up
http://207.150.221.97/m2systec

I will update as soon as the real Domain goes online

Cheers!

@jpadua,

besides the interlaced option, ano pa ba advantages ng radeons over the nvidia cards?

im using Palit Daytona GF4MX440 - 8x 64mb

im planning to use  a radeon din e, and i have no experience with radeons...

im interested in:
1. Radeon VE 7000 - Php2,000.00 est.
2. 9100 Sapphire - Php3,500.00 est.
3. 9200 HIS Radeon - 8x -- Php4,500.00 est.

Kahit anong radeon ok naman, even the 7000 for DVD playback.  Some htpc's actually use the Radeon7000.  Cguro, get the 9200 at least it will perform better than your current card.

Confusing (intentionally, I think) talaga ang naming ng ATI cards.  If I understand it right 9200 to 9800 series share the same core.
97xx and 98xx are virtually the same card; 98xx is just the latest and greatest.  The others in the 9xxx line are just crippled (some features are turned off) and downclocked versions.

The 9100 series I think is the  8500 under a new name (that's why this card is not 8x agp).  Note however, this card is not crippled (all features working) or downclocked.

I would choose the 9100 over the 9200.  In fact, the 9100 has a higher pricetag than the 9200.  I haven't seen a vendor carrying a 9200 selling a 9100 also (too confusing: bakit masmahal ang 9100 sa 9200?)

this are the prices i got:
1. Sapphire 9100 64mb P9,800 at rsuncomputers.com but this item is no longer listed at their website.  I failed to notice this item at pcoptions (hindi na kasi namimigay ng pricelist)

2. HIS 9200 64mb P3,400 at any PCExpress

Looks like 9100s are disappearing.  So it's 9200 or 7000VE for those of us on a budget.

Wow... sabi ko na nga ba your leading to that road of wealth generation  ;D

Jay, I think you are also better off looking at their slimline series... baka mas okay, we also need to come up with a Linux type implementation so that when you turn it on direct dvd boot agad similar to Xbox boot-up.  :o

yeah been readin up on that too :) although we may want to start with a windows based system so that its price would be justified as not just a DVD player but a multi function appliance. More software and much more user friendly to average users than Linux.  It's still a PC but specifically built up for your HT system.  Maybe after this.. will get into that as well. Linux HD-DVD system.

Yeah I've heard about directdvd 5.0 although di pa ako nakakakita nun.  Kung wala kang VGA in sa 51 mo, use s-video nalang thats your best option.  If you are using an Nvidia card I suggest using a 3rd party software called TVtool you can get it sa www.tvtool.de unfortunately its not freeware you have to pay $10 for the registration key. If your main connection talaga is s-video w/ nvidia cards... TVtool is the best! the s-video implementation of the detonator drivers are so bad compared to the clarity of the video from TVtool. TVtool even has 2 layers of flicker adjustment, and has sharpening, and contrast tools and it also allows native DVD resolution of 720x480 unlike the standard 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768 resolutions of the standard driver. (by the way this is not compatible with powerstrip so if you use powerstrip turn it off before using TVtool)

make sure na naka disable yung twinview clone mode on the nvidia advanced tab. Enable TV tool, select s-video.  Then do all you tweaking... explore what you can do with TV tool to get the best picture

The version you have is old. I think TV tool already came out with version 8. The older versions didnt support the MX440 not until version 8.  Go to www.tvtool.com  If you are really plan to be using tvtool (its worth it) I suggest you get yourself a registered copy.  Its only $10. :) you can download version 8 evalutaion copy to test and really see if its worth your money, which I'm sure it is.  The evaluation copy runs with full features except for a time limit of 15min

here are the new features in version TVtool V.8
Support for MV TV encoder (internal TV chip on GF4-MX and GF-FX)
Extensive nView configuration tab
Support for GF-FX
Support for GF4-MX 420,440 and 460
Support for GF4Go, GF-FX Go
Overlay problems fixed for GF2Go
Overlay Colors adjustable
Special resolutions 768x576 and 720x480 added for Philips SAA7104 and
Philips SAA7108A.

ok jay, for $10, is it okay if i keep my GF4mx440-8x and buy tvtool8?

or will i just sell my gf4 and get a radeon 9100?

also, id like to ask for tweaking tips on how to improve my viewing experience.

28" Widescreen sony (1024x768 res)
Connected to my PC via s-video
i use latest detonator on GF4mx440-8x,64ddr
nforce2 mcpt
creative 5.1 5300inspire

although i get a decent viewing experience, is till like to tweak it more. maybe try other types of connections or other software?

i want to try a different resolution e.  720x480?

should i get a radeon-powerstrip?
nvidia-tvtool?

my tv is currently at 1024x768 and i just set the software's (WinDVD Platinum 5) Aspect Ratio to the OFF setting, so i can fill in the whole screen (pero the image is a little taller, onti lang naman and i can get away with it hehehe)

pero siyempre i still want an excellent resolution.

any other connection i should try other than the s-video? you can see the TV's connectors here: http://www.pbase.com/bardigones/widescreen

thanks.

Actually with your connecitons since you dont have VGA input, its not nessesary to use powerstirp because you will only be using s-video. If you decide to stick with your Geforce Card, then TV tool is the best solution you can get.  With TV tool you can even go 720x480 native DVD resolution which is the best you can get with s-video through a video card.  you only  spend $10

Your other option is to go with a radeon.. but I dont think you would see much difference with s-video.  so I suggest just keeping your card first, purchase TV tool.  Once you have a TV with a VGA input then switch over to a Radeon then use powerstrip, Theatertek and FFdshow for the best DVD viewing experience
