:P alf,

that's my age talaga. anyway, i think noel will settle sa yamaha rx-v496. kita nya ang review mataas daw. pwede kaya yung speaker nya 250w jbl? baka masira avr nya.  ;D ;D

Pre,

May problem din pag masyadong mataas ang wattage ng speakers. You are using 70w ampli connected to a 250w speakers. Sa taas ng dynamic headroom ng audio medium ngayon hindi malayong i-crank up mo yun volume dahil malinis yon sound then mag-clip ang ampli, which in turn could create harmonics (from the Ampli) na makakasama sa iyong tweeters :-/

Hey beefjerky!

I own an Onkyo TX-DS575X w/c I ordered thru www.onecall.com for $430 (shipping fees included). Here are some of its features:

Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro-Logic & DTS 5.1 decoders
70 watts per channel (8 ohms)
Binding posts for all channels (banana plug)
2 optical & 2 coaxial digital inputs
3 audio inputs & 4 A/V inputs
4 S video inputs & 2 S video outputs
5.1 channel external inputs
8 DSP modes
Backlit learning remote with macro functions

Anyway, my system is composed of 2 JBL L100T floor standing speakers (fronts), JBL Movies 2 (center & surrounds) plus a JBL Digital 10 powered subwoofer.

I used to have a simple pro-logic setup using a Yamaha amp & processor with the same set of speakers. With the Onkyo, the JBL's sounded a lot better! I’m very satisfied with it. :)

Comparing the Onkyo with Denon's AVR-3801 is simply a no contest since it has more features:

105 watts per channel (8 ohms)
Dolby Digital 6.1 matrix decoding (not EX since it isn't THX certified)
DTS ES-Discrete/Matrix 6.1 decoding
Component video input & output

Of course it's more expensive at roughly $1,200. So I guess it boils down to two things:

How much you're willing to spend and what kind of setup you want to have.

Enjoy!

P.S.

For more detailed reviews check out Sound & Vision's November 2000 (Onkyo) and May 2001 (Denon) issues plus the links below:

I agree with Dobler if you can afford go with the 3801.

First of all it is the most inexpensive DTS-ES 7.1 Channel AVR.

If you are going for the Onkyo TX-DS575X try AVR-1601.

I am not sure if the onkyo is DVD-Audio ready. Maybe Dobler can comment on this.

For more reviews... http://www.audioreview.com. BTW this site is owned by a filipino in the USA.

The Onkyo is DVD-Audio ready. If you're really going for Denon, you might want to look at the AVR-1801 or AVR-2801 (aside from the 1601).

Both of them have nearly the same features as Onkyo with the 2801 having more power at 90 watts per channel. The 1801 also has 70 watts per channel like the Onkyo but not all of its speaker terminals are banana plug compatible.

I suggest you visit Denon & Onkyo's website and do a side by side comparison.

P.S.

If you live in Manila, there's an Onkyo showroom along West Avenue, Q.C.

black 575x = P22,000
gold 575x = P23,000

i did some researching and i found out that onkyos arent that durable, maraming kinks. a friend told me that his earlier model 575 keeps on shutting off then turning on after a few months of use, something about speaker protection circuit or something...

im still looking for shops with denon units for testing. too bad virra mall is still closed after the fire. :-/

The problem your friend had may be limited to an earlier 575 model. Onkyo released the 575x with some modifications like speaker binding posts for all channels. I had mine since July and I haven't experienced glitches with it.

Remember that once you buy a receiver, there's no turning back, so just get the better one.

Im also planning to upgrade my receiver but my budget is for the Onkyo 484 or Yamaha 496 model only. I tried checking out different stores but some would recommend onkyo while others would recommend yamaha. Please help me decide which one to choose and where can i  get a good bargain. If these models are not good , i will just have to save for a better model. Thanks

Have you tried the Yamaha RXV800 ? If you haven't then I suggest you give it a try. It's now selling at P29,500 from a high of P33,500 when I bought it last Feb.2001. I have mind hook-up with Mirage AVS500 and a Yamaha YST SW 160 and it really rocks the house.

The choice of Onkyo 575 vs. Denon 3801 would likely be influenced by what speakers you are going to use.

I auditioned Onkyo 575 and Denon 3300 (not the 3801) and found that Onkyo is on the warm side and would likely mate well with brightish speakers (like most entry-level stuff).  The Denon is rather bright so you'd have to match accordingly.  Again, note that comment is for the 3300, not 3801 but I won't be surprised if both models have the same character.

There would be some who won't be able to spot the difference between the two.  If you are one of these people, just go on ahead and get the cheaper one and keep the change for DVDs.  :)

I personally chose the NAD T760 (sold to me for PhP45k).  It had better control vs. the Onkyo despite I think it's lower power rating and I needed this since I'd be driving 4ohm Dynaudios.  vs. the Denon which exhibited a very wide soundstage, I still chose the NAD due to its more defined placement of instruments and voices on the soundstage.

A.V. Driver at Shangri-la has some Denons on display.  I'm just not sure if they have the 3801.  Do know that if you audition there, the only entry to mid-level speakers you'd find there is Energy.  The other speakres are $$$ (Dunlavy, Piega, Revel, etc.)!

I think the distributor is over at Eastwood City in Libis across Citibank.  They also carry JMLab and YBA.

I've read here at Elctronics Depot also along Libis has Denons for auditio with Mirage and Acoustic Energy.

If it were my money, I'd save up a little more for an Onkyo 575x or a Yamaha 595a.

If your DPL receiver today can accept 5.1 channel inputs, an alternative would be to use Yamaha's DDP-2 DD/DTS decoder.  I saw one at Sound Dimension in Park Square for <PHP10k.

DENON 3802 VS. ONKYO 797. Anyone care to compare?
« Reply #111 on: Apr 01, 2002 at 08:24 AM »
The Denon 3802 and the Onkyo 797THX both sell for P56,000.00. The former boasts of a 7.1 capability while the latter is 6.1 but THX Certified. Anyone, who had undertaken a serious audition of both models and or made an A and B comparison?

Denon or Marantz? B&W or SonusFaber? Please help!
« Reply #115 on: Apr 11, 2002 at 04:01 AM »
I apologize for this long post. Insomniacs have nothing to do in the twilight hours so please bear with me.

I'm pretty much a newbie who is about to go insane. Needles to say, I'm in dire need of suggestions/recommendations (or better yet: a psychological consultation). The last time I shelled out for my HT was about 7 years ago. And honestly, it was pretty straight forward then, but now, there's a plethora of brands/makes to choose from.

A little backgrounder must be in order so here you go: I've a smallish listening room and my existing setup is composed of a pathetic 10-year old Pioneer receiver (no DTS-ES, no DPL2, droopy sound and now technically dead at the service center), 7-year old Atlantic Technology speakers for my main, center and surrounds (small and all plastic), an old but reliable MK V-75 front firing active sub, and a brand new Pioneer 533K dvd player (and the only thing new). So once more, I've started another quest for a decent setup that would last me the next 7 years (hopefully). I believe the MK is a keeper, so I'm keeping it.

I'm opting to do this slowly, therefore, aside from a new receiver, my plan is to replace my front stage first then go to the surrounds later (my present budget can only get me that far). To date, I've auditioned the Energy e:XL-16, Veritas 2.3 (they didn't have the bookshelf 2.1 at that time, out of stock maybe), Dynaudio Audience 4.2, and the AR bookshelf speakers. The Veritas are awesome. These speakers seemed to talk to me. I didn't want to go back to the XLs after hearing these floorstanders (unfortunately, I can't afford these babies). The Dyns were, I think, a little flat and bright (perhaps it still wasn't fully broken in). ARs are just soso (muddy in my opinion).

Regarding receivers, I brought home a loaner Yamaha for 2 weeks to audition. The Yams are fully featured but I felt they're a little bright (40++ dsp's is pretty confusing and superfluous IMHO).  Denons are fantastic and robust yet it's relatively ill featured for the price (heck no on-screen display!). I've heard build quality problems on the Onkyo's though. In this side of the equation, I was leaning towards the Denon 2802, but here comes Marantz 6200 into the fray (it's cheaper!).

So this weekend, I'll be pouring time into auditioning the Marantz 6200, as well as the B&W CDM 1NT, and the gorgeous Sonus Faber Concertinos. To me the Tinos are total "eye candies" and pretty much "future proof" (I find this to be a big factor). So due to my meager review and current stock availability, I'm left w/ the following choices:

Denon AVR2802 or Marantz SR6200 ???
&
B&W CDM 1NT or Sonus Fabera Concertino (Home) ???

Help! I welcome any input.
TIA, - Racio Martinez

Racio,
Denon or Marantz? I think it is a very close call. Between receivers within a related price range, you should look for the features, the aesthetics (whether you love it's looks) and sheer gut feeling. The sound quality between 2 receivers within the same price range is almost comparing apples with apples. :) I think there is a mere 5%-10% difference in sound quality and for most, it's a psychological difference. :)
I also had the same dilemna last year when comparing the CDM1NT and Sonus Faber Concertino. It all boils down to which "characteristics" you prefer and suits your listening style. I for one chose the Sonus Faber Concertino but let your ears and eyes decide.

Characteristics :
CDM1NT : musical purity where there is almost a cleansing sound to it's clarity, more analytical, more detail, has deep soundstage and very open in the upper frequencies (NAUTILUS?). Suits LIVE, ACOUSTIC music.

Concertino : more emotional and involving sounding, less detail, openness in the mids. Suits vocal jazz and piano/violin led music.

Im also selling my Sonus Faber Concertino if you are interested in an audition, PM me. Good luck on your search. Whichever speaker you purchase, you won't be dissapointed! Just my 2 cents. :)

Your opting to do your system upgrade/update slowly is very, very good.

It'd be great if you can audition the speaker/amp combinations in your shortlist together.

You mentioned you auditioned the Audience 42 w/c means you probably did that at Listening Room/In Style which means you probably used a Yamaha receiver.  If it sounded bright to you, you're hearing the receiver.  The Dyn's are one of the most neutral speakers around so if you feed it bright, you'd hear it bright.  I have the audience 40, driven by a NAD T760, it isn't at all bright.  Highs are smooth yet details are still retrieved well.

Where did you audition the Energy's?  Audio Visual Driver?  If there, you used NAD or Denon?  The latter are warmish sounding pieces.  I don't find it convincing that the famed Dyn Esotar tweets sound brighter than the aluminun dome tweets on the Veritas.  But then again, that's just me.  You're ears will tell you the truth.  :)

The Concertinos ar something else now...that's what I have on my Audio set-up.  I'd put it in the same price/performance class as the Audience but with very, very different characters.  Manila summed it up well.  The Dyns are more analytical and honest.  The SF's more musical, and smoother.  This is why I chose Dyns for my HT (so I hear pinpoint effects, clear dialogues, etc.) and SF's on audio (so I have a forgiving, highly musical, system that won't bleed my eardrums during my VST & co. moods).  :)

Last pointers...The Sonus do their best on tube amps (my first stop after winning the lottery is a Conrad Johnson showroom) or at least, tube sounding amps (Mufical Fidelity, Electrocompaniet, even warm amps like Rotel, NAD).

The Dyns are rather power hungry.

I use Ixos Gamma 6003 on both Dyn & SF.  Works much better than the 14 guage monster cables I used to have.  My next cable purchase would be VdH's the source for my I/C.
