I liked Josh Powell as a role player for the Lakers. Medjo awkward lang na he was trying to be feisty last night when that's not how I remember him before. He was the reserved type who usually kept to himself when he made baskets. hehe

Pero kagabi parang trying hard to be someone else. I guess new country, new personality. hahaha

Hopefully he clicks for ginebra. he is definitely not going to give them huge point production but he was a decent role player who excelled in getting rebounds.

perhaps he has this "i'm a former L.A. Lakers player with back-to-back championships!" mentality.

nung nasa San Miguel pa siya at nagchampion sila medyo lumalakas na ang loob niya under Ato Agustin. He was contributing quality minutes and was aggressive in going to the basket. pero dahil nalipat ng team, at nalipat ulit hanggang sa makarating sa Meralco medyo wala na namang kumpiyansa sa sarili.

Yup, Guevarra did show some promise when he was given decent minutes ...... nagkataon na puro injuries ang PETRON noon kaya nakalaro kahit paano.

One more thing limiting Guevarra, like so many others in the PBA, he cannot create his own shot.

Not unless you play for teams with systematic-offenses (ex. SMC, TnT, RoS  & ALASKA), players like Guevarra wont score much and will likely stay on the bench.

A good example is Larry Fonacier - the guy cant make his own shot, yet is highly effective when playing in a systematic team ...... in TnT/ALASKA he usually curls off screens and/or spots up, which serves his limitations really well.

In short, Rey Guevarra doesn't have the guts of Samboy Lim or Vergel Meneses attacking the basket.
He has the height and length playing the wing but aside from not developing his confidence, he even didn't develop his outside shooting.
Sayang un talent nya pang exhibition game lng.

i remember during his letran days, there was a dunk style that my cousin cannot do, pero nung napanuod nya si guevarra parang ang dali daw.. grabe tumalon.. im not sure lng if he is more of a 2-feet jumper kasi mahihirapan tlaga sya lalo na sa zone d kasi walang bwelo..

Glias easily beat the PBA all stars.
Sayang the PBA should have included 5 of the current imports playing to the all Filipino stars to give Gilas a tougher exhibition game.

Tough to beat a healthy and hungry TNT team. Even without an import, they're a very deep team. The 10-man rotation they have right now is very solid. Lahat may significant contribution, may it be on offense or defense. Nadagdagan pa now that Seigle is back. Problema lang nila ngayon ay yung status ng import nila. Fell hard earlier and hurt his shoulder. Dinala agad sa Makati Med. Kung seryoso yun, their chemistry might get disrupted going into the playoffs. Perfect fit pa naman sana si Howell sa kanila. Not a heavy scorer but an excellent rebounder especially on the offensive side.

I admire Coach Norman Black for smoothly adapting to the system left by Coach Chot with TNT.

All 3 companies that applied for expansion teams have been approved by the board. Salud made the confirmation just now at the PBA office after the board meeting. That's at least 42 new roster spots.

The PBA will have 13 teams next season. The 3 new teams (NLEX, KIA, Blackwater) will get the 11th-13th picks for next season's draft but they weren't allowed to have direct hires. Current teams will be asked to name 14 players that will be protected. Those not named will be included in the expansion draft to be held after this current season ends in July.

NLEX, being the 3rd team of the MVP Group, will have a vote on policy matters but not on game-related matters. Just like SMC's 3rd team, San Mig Coffee, they can't vote on matters involving trades, game protests, officiating issues, the Draft and salary cap rules/violations.

Good that Comm. Cheato Salud & the board approved the expansion, however I would have wanted that Sy's BLACKWATER team be rejected.

Not to belittle Sy, but I just dont think that he can mount a sustained campaign - one that seriously competes for a championship ....... I have a feeling that after a year or two, he'll go the farm-team route (like BARAKO, AIR21 & GPORT) since its a very lucrative business e.g. Arwind Santos for P20M anyone ?

One more thing, an odd-numbered league this small, might make for scheduling issues, which opens up the possibility of match-up fixing.

The good thing about all of this, those fringe players toiling in the DLeague & ABL will have their chance to show their game ...... there's just so much local talent to supply even 15-20 teams.

Now what is the Chot's system? Is it really a case of Black adapting to Chot's system or the players adapting to Black's system?

Coach Norman's system always involve a good post game by a productive big man, a tough defender and a good rebounder plus a point guard that controls the game with a good outside shot.
Throughout the years this has always been Black's system, he did that before as playing coach of San Miguel with him as the productive center, Noli Banate/ Alvin Teng as the tough defender rebounder, Marte Saldana/ Hector Calma as the point guard.
He even used the same system during his tenure as Ateneo's coach.
Same system with Rabeh/ Greg as the productive center, Baclao as the tough defender rebounder, and Jai Reyes/Eman Monfort as the point guard.

With TNT, he didn't push this system playing the post game like he used to but instead continue Reyes' system with TNT playing the international type of game with speed, fluid passing and outside shooting.

It's not really a case of Norman Black adapting to Chot's dribble-drive offense but him incorporating that to his deliberate type of basketball. Hindi na puro drive and dish. Meron na silang post game with Ranidel, Seigle, their import and even Canaleta sometimes. Di naman talaga mawawala yung dribble drive nila kasi they have Castro but Black has done a good job balancing both systems. Swerte rin kasi si Norman dahil yung lineup niya ngayon, fit for both systems.

For me though, they key for their success so far this conference is their health. Both ends na kasi nilalaro nila now that they're complete. Yung lineup nila ngayon solid on both ends. Di na napapagod yung players kasi they have at least a 10-man rotation now.

OT: Other teams use the PBA for marketing like SMC, TNT, Alaska, ROS...
but Merlaco and NLEX are monopolies who do not have competition.
It is not like I will pass NLEX more because I like their basketball team...
I have often wondered why does MERALCO and NLEX need a basketball team? Any inputs?

It's more of Black not rocking the boat - its a winning formula with a lineup full of team-first personalities, why mess with success.

Black just added some bits e.g. a bit more touches for Ranidel down low, utilizing Canaleta & Seigle's back to the basket game, etc ...... but its basically the same group of guys moving the ball well & keeping fresh legs always on the floor.

TnT's health has been suspect the past conferences, now fully healthy (much like SMC's predicament) they're leading the way ...... Kelly's back, R.Reyes is finally healthy, Ranidel healthy compared to past conferences, etc.

MVP is a patron of sports and basketball seems very close to his heart ...... though I despise his piracy & patronage methods in the amateurs (UAAP/NCAA), he seems to maintain his MERALCO & NLEX teams, more to amp his competitive nature; probably get some media mileage for his companies along the way.

Note that it takes is "just" P20M annually to run a PBA team (assuming one follows the PBA salary cap) ...... kung ang ATENEO nga binibigyan ni MVP nang same amount for its UAAP mens team, siyempre hindi niya papahuli ang corporate teams niya.

Haha was at the game kanina. Global Port gave them a scare! Yung free throw nung import parang sinadya na lang imintis.haha parang gusto nang umuwi.

Kulang na kulang sa rebounding pag wala si Howell. Tapos si Cabagnot naka Kobe/Durant mode kaya nahirapan TnT

TNT didn't take that game seriously the whole time kaya naging close. Kahit na sinabi pa nila na it was just like their previous games, they relaxed tonight lalo na nung 2nd Quarter. They could have pulled away then but Norman Black decided to use his 3rd stringers kaya Global got confident.

SMB responding very well under Todd Purves.
Maganda un pagbalasa nya ng mga role players like Hubalde, Kramer and Tupid who really played hard specially in defense.
Why does SMB appoint him as full time Head Coach in public.
Does the PBA or the Coaches Association in the Phil prohibit the hiring of a foreign coach as head coach of any PBA team?
