What they got were not superstars but players that have specific skillsets that can help them. They got them at a great bargain to boot. PG duties will be handled by AR15, D'Lo, LBJ and now Gabe Vincent who is a significant upgrade over Dennis Schroder.
The lost the DEN series via a sweep yes but the combined margin deficit for those 4 losses is just -24 points or 12 plays or less w/ the three point shot. All those games were close and could have been decided by role players which they didn't have like a Bruce Brown who is instant offense/defense off the bench.
That is where analysts are coming from when they rate the moves of LAL this offseason. They got rid of non contributing players (Beasley, Brown Jr., Bamba, Walker etc) and got players that are contributors to their former teams. They got them at the correct salary at that. Those players can be instrumental next year if and when they meet DEN again. DEN just lost their 6th man. Walang silang pinalit as of today to replace Bruce Brown. The entire West teams naman eh didnt get a lot better. Some overpaid while some didnt even bother to make moves.
You can say that last year the Lakers were the second best team in the West. It might be a different story this year.
