PHILIPS DVD-R (from CDR King)

Manufacturer - CMC
Media code - CMC MAG. AE1
Physical description -  Silver with violet print
Max. burn speed - 8x; Actually burned at 8x
Nero CD-DVD Speed ScanDisc Test - No read errors
Test platforms - Lite-On SOHD 16P9SV and Pioneer 270 standalone

Notes:  Spec printed on the disc is "1-8x"; yet my Lite-on SOHW-1653S writer indicates max speed as "12x"

Question, accurate ba yung pag-check if i use software that checks md5s and hashes to verify the data burned on a disc (e.g. DVDSig, CD Check, etc.)? Napapansin ko kasi laging may incorrect hash pag ginamit ko ang mga 'to to verify data integrity on a disc. mga AVIs usually ang binuburn ko. pero wala naman error habang binuburn.

is it a drive issue or did philips change manufacturers? i noticed that HP, philips and iomega all use CMC as their manufacturer for dvd-r's.

My Lite-on loves Riteks, too.

However, I had to switch to other brands because readability on standalone players is inconsistent.

strange... i've never had problems with mine. of course, if it's an archive... i never burn faster than 6x.

still, no ritek coasters or faulty reads on standalone players... so far.  :-\

Medyo OT, pero I was able to get a bootleg Naruto movie that was burned into this "Vio" DVD-R and it played flawlessly, even if the burn was almost near the edge of the allowed burn area. Comparing these with other anime DVD-Rs I've bought, wala man lang palya tiong pag play nitong "Vio" media.

nothing to see even with a screenshot... it's pure white with the words "ViO" (yes. small case italics yung "i") and "DVD-R8X" in the center ring.

i went back to CD-R King today... and sadly, only 7 pieces of ViO 8x DVD-Rs were left... only 4 of which were "decent" (not pristine... pero kinuha ko na rin. sayang eh.)

they do, however, have new ViO 8x DVD+Rs... i bought 11 pieces... trial lang... unfortunately, hindi na siya sony .. Daxon na.  (altho... daxon din ata gumagawa nung sony discs... not 100% sure about this tho.) anyway... here's what nero gave me.

Below is the scan of the "rowan" dvd-r, scanned the disc with a benq 1640 and you would notice na pwede sya hanggang 16x. I have tried to scan it with benq's qsuite and ok ang pag write nya on 8x speed.

Sorry, if medyo not related to the topic at hand...

But why do more people use DVD-R media?  I thought that DVD+R is supposed to be the better media (albeit slightly only) compared to DVD-R?

So far I've been trying to use DVD+R media mostly (I bought a few DVD-R but haven't been using those types lately).

Is it because DVD-R is supposed to be more compatible with set-top DVD players than DVD+R disks?

~~~~~
BTW, aside from CDR-King, there's also a new CD/DVD blank media shop called Datamax (the one I saw is in SM San Lazaro), their prices are quite competitive with CDR-King's too. They have the "Titanium ("Made by Imation") DVD-R 8x, costs Php18.00 and also "Imation i-Pro" DVD-R 16x  @Php18.00 too. Haven't tried burning them yet (I bought a couple of pcs only).
yes... that's one of the primary reasons. dvd-rs are more compatible with most set-top dvd players.  ;) i know there was a thread somewhere where firewired himself explained the technical differences between the +R and -R formats (could even be this one. LOL.)... might want to check that out.
yup... saw them too... i wanted to go in and check but i was in a bit of a rush and i had already bought what i needed at CD-R King. maybe when i go there next time, i can check it out. would you happen to know if they have dual layer media?
Though, I also use Maxell +RW . Two of my players can't play it. And two disc from a bulk of 15 are defective.  >:( But hasn't encountered any problems with my 40 different brand -RWs.
BTW, Are there any -R DL available? +R DL pa lang kasi ang napapansin ko.
There's something to learn everyday
