bought the Trilogy kanina sa astroplus podium. yup, R3 ang nakatatak sa box, walang Tagalog subtitle. also bought the Schindler's List and pre-ordered Shrek 2.

Not like LOTR -- like Alien Quadrilogy. R3, but produced abroad so the workmanship is similar to the R1 version.  No Tagalog subtitles?! Oh well, that would've been a treat.

I just brought the r3 version and it is identical to the r1 version. There weren't any missing special features. The packaging is even identical which is great.

Has anyone here managed to watch their copies yet? I finished The Empire Strikes Back last night and it felt like I was watching it for the first time. Lowry should win an award for the restoration and clean-up work. Couldn't believe this  was a 20 year old film. And the sound... whoa! Worth the price of entry! Better than when I saw the SE films in Louie's THX.

Does anyone know whether the audio issues reported by fans on the R1 are duplicated on the R3 release?

What audio issues?

Got this from dvdanswers.com:

Quote
Fans Discover Glitch in 'Star Wars' DVD Soundtrack
Fans of John Williams are up in arms over an apparent glitch in the new Star Wars DVD set in which the left and right channels fed to the rear speakers in surround sound are reversed in the original Star Wars movie (Episode 4). John Takis, who frequently analyzes film scores for Internet groups, points out that the violins can be heard coming from the left surround-sound speakers and the cellos from the left. "It is essentially a 124-minute audio glitch," Takis writes on the John Williams fansite, www.JW-Music.net. "The sound effects are correctly positioned in the surround channels. It's just the music that's backwards." Takis also takes issue with other aspects of the sound mix for the original movie. "Remember the awesome fanfare version of the Force theme that kicks off the Death Star battle?" he writes "Good luck hearing it this time around—it's virtually inaudible."

Link here.

There are also a few posts regarding this in the R1 thread.

Okay... funny, i didn't notice. I was more concerned about the positional sound effects which were great. The soundtrack problem didn't register. It's likely present in the R3 version as well since it uses the same master as the R1 release.

Regarding group purchases, Astro doesn't accept such arrangements. You'd have to talk to Viva directly for something like that. Unfortunately, my contact in the Fox unit resigned a couple of weeks ago so I'm still waiting for word on who's taking his place.

I just watched episode 4 and the glitch is noticeable if you know about it. But the makers already said that it was " a creative decision" so I guess I wouldnt consider this a biggie. I also found some funny moments in the movie that i just noticed. Number one, if you look closely, when c3po and r2 were hiding in a room the death star, one of the troopers bashes his head upon entering the blast door. And also, when luke comes back fom destroying the death star, he hugs leia but mistakenly calls her carrie. very noticeable if you have a good sound system.

Does the R3 have inner cover art like the R2 version? Clear cases right?  ;)

From SPaCeMaN SPiFF's post in the R1 thread:

I'm thinking that if it does have this, then it might be worthwhile to get the R3 instead.. Decisions, decisions..  ::)

Speaking of SW funny moments which you can only catch on video, in Episode VI, after Leia gets shot by a stormtrooper in the Endor battle scene and Han tries to help her sit up - check where Harrison Ford places his right hand!  Tsk tsk tsk... :)  Noticed that after another viewing of the Episode VI DVD.  :)
We deserve better.

thanks neon for the heads up..

btw, i passed by Music One Greenbelt today and i have noticed na ang dami pa nilang stocks...  i  checked the Star Wars dvd box and correct me if i am wrong.. mas matingkad (the word.. hehehe) ang silver foil box package ng R1 release compared to  R3.. i perceived the box package to be slightly dull.. the difference is similar to Superbit silver foil of R1 and R3 releases... or Disney Treasures Canada and US Releases.. wherein US releases are more shiny and the boxes/packages are sturdier..

i based my observation from the pix posted here and the R1 thread.. my Star Wars will arrive tomorrow (via JAC)..  so need your help guys in pacifying me with infos so i can sleep tonight.. hehehe.. lol

any views?

That's actually funny, since when I stopped by Astro yesterday and picked up an R3 for examination, I remember the one thing that entered in my mind was: it seems shinier than my R1.

The quality of the cardboard of the R1 is nothing to write home about, either. It's pretty flimsy. Can't compare to the R3, since I haven't seen an open R3 set.

oic.. after collecting multiple releases and versions of different titles, i suddenly become obsessed with the idea of owning dvds with the best packaging and over-all value for money.

but really great observation Mr. Hankey..  salamat..

For those wo already bought the trilogy R3, paki confirm nga kung ganito rin nangyayari sa R3.  This is from digitalbits.com na nangyayari sa R1:

While we're on the subject of the Star Wars DVDs, we've been getting many, many questions and complaints about the audio changes and "music issues" on A New Hope.  All we can tell you is that Lucasfilm claims the audio on the disc is exactly as they intended it to be.  HOWEVER, we are also getting a lot of complaints from readers who have been experiencing a disc playback problem with A New Hope.  Apparently, on many players, the disc freezes for a few seconds (we suspect near the layer switch point) and then skips ahead several minutes.  Fox Customer Service is taking the names and addresses of people who are experiencing this problem so they can arrange to send you a fixed replacement disc.  You can call them at 888-223-2FOX.  Again, this addresses the freezing problem only.  This is not a replacement for any sound issues.  Just FYI.

I think the freeze issue is isolated on some dvd players only. I have a promac dvd player and hindi naman siya nag skip so I guess you can just hope that your player will play the dvd seamlesly.

If no freezing or skipping occurs on a Pioneer, then it's probably okay. Pioneers are darn picky.
