« Reply #180 on: Nov 22, 2010 at 12:13 PM »
hi everyone,

i just need some help sourcing for screen material for my HT. i searched through the net and found that blackout material is commonly used for DIY screens. my screen is around 112" + 3.5" border all around 16:9. my question is, where in manila can i buy blackout curtains that are suitable for projector screens of this size?

thanks in advance

Update on DIY Projector screen:
I received my Optoma HD66 720p DLP 3D projector a month ago to replace my old PLUS PIANO DLP 480p. Because its HD and brighter contrast ratio, I decided to upgrade my screen from 90" to 120" (59" x 105") diagonal. Once again it's a DIY task and some tips that I got from projectorcentral.com. I started with a couple of 4x8 hardiflex cut into size, nail it to a 67" x 113" wood frame.(4" wider to accomodate the border).

I applied putty to hide the seams, sand till flush. Applied primary flat latex paint using roller brush enough to cover mapping shades caused by the putty. Now the final and most important material, the "satin finish paint". Generously apply the satin paint using a roller brush till you got a uniform shade. Black borders are optional. I ripped 4" wide plywood strips, wrapped it with non-reflective black material (material used to wrap mobile speakers/amplifiers).

I am quite skeptic at first until I fired up the DLP PJ and tested it. Well the screen  is much better than the old one I had ( made of cloth material). Blacks are near perfect . My seating distance is about 15-19'. any significant clarity compared to a 1080p is very minimal. Cost to bulid +P2.5k

I suggest start with your existing plywood screen, top it with a couple layer of either Davies BF-50501 Satin White, Boysen Satin Finish B7410, or even ace SATIN FINISH(ace is about 3x the price). Sometimes satin comes with shades so choose color closest to white (duh!) I'm sure  paint stores  sells per liter (tingi) because these are usually sold in gallon sizes (you only need half a gallon for a 120 ").   If you decide on a DIY, application should be limited to concrete and drywall substrates only like hardiflex.

Test it first on your existing screen (maybe a liter will do) then decide.

Anybody know any branch of Shell Canvas which still has that BOC which could be stretched for a projector screen? The one they currently sell cannot be stretched anymore, which means a screen cannot be 54" anymore... :(

Sa mga gumawa ng DIY screen using shell canvas BOC, anong side ng cloth (colored or the white back side) ang ginamit ninyo.  Anong color ng BOC ang binili ninyo? I'm asking kasi if you're going to use the back side as your screen, then it doesn't really matter what color of BOC you buy, tama ba? Or do I buy the whitest BOC that I can buy then use the front side?

It's either it's white or light grey so it will depend on your pj. The light grey will improve contrast but white shots will not be so white. So it does not really matter but get the whitest you can and the SMOOTHEST you can para walang texture yung mga close up shots ;)

Thanks Ricky.  Kaya ko po naitanong kasi napansin ko yung mga BOC sa shell canvas comes in different colors pero yung back side nila eh pare-parehong white.  So do you actually use the front or the back side of the BOC?  Plano ko kasi, once dumating na yung fixed frame screen na inorder ko, I'll use the BOC to cover  my windows (colored side facing the outside). Right now black cartolina lang ang ipinangtakip ko sa window glass (di halata since meron din akong vertical blinds).  Effective naman since wala talagang light leak, pero when you view the window from the outside (lawn), it looks weird kasi all black.  Am thinking of getting a colored BOC (green or cream para maganda naman tingnan yung window from the outside) pero yung back side which is white ang gagamitin ko as PJ screen.

Borrowed from one of the forums..

Pag nag DIY paint ka nang Plywood using roller, ganito texture pag close up, ok lang ba yun? is there a way na mas makinis or talagang ganyan kalalabasan?

Pwede mo gamitan sand paper na pinong Pino until you get the texture you prefer. Yung iba minamasilya nila para Makinis talaga then light sanding pa din

Bro r1dvd you have to use the white part talaga ESP Kung colored yung reverse side.

Still can't decide whether to use plywood or blackout cloth for my temporary screen

1/2" gagamitin ko para makapal na at di na kelangan nang brace sa likod, or may mas makapal pa ba dito? Basta yung makapal na..

Since di ako expert ang kelangan ko sana eh Materials to use.

Like Paint, anong brand, anong type, anong magandang color for PJ...
My primer pa ba?
May sizes ba ang roller, anong klaseng roller.. etc...

he he he... I'm so excited to start na he he he

3/4" ata yung susunod sa 1/2". Siguro nga 1/2" ang tama, yung 3/4" baka masyado na mabigat.

Another option you can consider is try looking at gypsum board, one side is matt white, it's flat and relatively cheaper than plywood for the same thickness. Another one that is ultra cheap is the tarpaulin material, it's also white and comes in assortment of textures.

Key here is not to spend too much if you just want something to satisfy your curiosity or for "pantawid gutom Lang"( ano nga term sa English nito? :-[)

Another combo you can use is 1/4 plowed covered with cloth, kahit ano white cloth pwede. Pwede din ala curtain style then just put counter weights at the bottom para mabanat sya.

Yup

And if ever you decide to use plywood, just apply glazing putty white ot you can also use kalsomine mixed with either flat wall enamel or the more expensive satin finish enamels available at ace hardwares.

Naku dami nyo na option, mas harder to decide tuloy ;D

Glazing putty? Di ba ito yung masilya sa wood? Pedeng ito lang gamitin? Pero di ba hindi brush gamit dito kundi yung thin metal thingy?
