As I have noticed in this thread that those movies with a lot of LFE's or those movies that give your sub a workout are branded as best sounding...

How about giving Diana Krall Live in Paris and Charlotte Church's Enchantment some credit ;)

Good point!
You can't go wrong with Diana Krall!  :D

and if you want classical music
check out telarcs DTS demo disc #5

Listeners to this Telarc DTS Surround Sampler will notice a clarity, directionality, and spaciousness that, until now, have been literally unheard. Using the encoding technology of Digital Theater Systems, Telarc here offers six surround-sound channels encoded in a single data stream in such way as to minimize data compression yet yield six 20-bit discrete playback channels. Other technologies are limited to a data compression ratio of twelve-to-one, rather than the three-to-one ratio utilized here. With compromise, thus at a minimum, the auditive improvement is astonishing.

Telarc engineer Michael Bishop has often pointed out that multi-channel technologies bring artistic realism to a new level partly because they grow from the self-evident principle that sound imaging is subjective and illusory—though the illusion embodies what is generally regarded as an accurate portrayal of reality. At all events, the images are conceived in the mind's ear, generated as they are by mechanisms. This new format gives the brain more imaging material more accurately than previous technologies, and what results is an unexampled capture of subtleties—as the tracks on this disc will show.

—Excerpt taken from the liner notes written by Michael Murray

Michael Bishop -- Sound Effects Design
1. Surround Madness v5.1.03
2. Monteverdi: Vespers of 1610: Deus is adjutorium / Domine ad adjuvandum
3. Horner: End Credits from Braveheart
4. Think About You
5. Sahra
6. Mahler: Lustig im Tempo und Keck im Ausdruck from Symphony No. 3
7. Holst: Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity from The Planets
8. Perfect Blues
9. Vaughan Williams: Beat! Beat! Drums! from Dona nobis pacem
10. Canning: Fantasy on a Hymn by Justin Morgan
11. Summertime
12. Broke and Hungry

Sound Effects

13. The Apollo 13 Mission
14. Home Run
15. Warp Eight
16. F-16 Fighter Squadron—Into the Battle
17. Jurassic Lunch

just be careful with track #1, 13, 16 and 17...
just make sure all your can goods are well secured in the pantry ;)
the recording on this dvd is truly reference quality, my only complaint is that the disk does not provide any graphics or screen saver while the disk is playing, so it has a tendency the burn your screen, specially if you have a rear projection TV. i normally just turn off my tv or just uses the PIP so as to prevent screen burn.

1) jurassic park (DTS)

2) the living sea (DTS) - wow!

i just rented them though. i plan to get them for my own collection someday.

Blade II

i think a number of you guys mentioned this already...but the newly released DTS ES 6.1/DTS EX soundtracks are, in my opinion, one of today's best material for auditioning.

wow! the club scene will really test your sub.

i liked that scene too!, that's one of the cool mix where the audio pans from the front to the back/surround speakers.
my only complaint about the sound is that when ever a big carrier ship pans on the screen, the walls in my house starts shaking...this was cool at first, but it gets old and kinda detracks your attention to the movie...they really put the lfe channel on steriods on this mix.

I agree with you on that one bently. This time around I think the lfe channel is more active compared to the Episode I dvd. Not once did my subwoofer go to standby mode.

In the Phantom Menace mix, I do remember that it went to standby mode once during the calmer Tatooine scenes.

Aside from the asteroid chase, the speeder chase and arena scenes are highlights.

You probably must mean this:

I thought that Charlie Chaplin's movies were all slient movies (actually this has a little music though). But hey, if you think silence is the best sound for you, then fine with us.
