Many are still skeptical about this though...

Warner Denies Rumors of Shift in High-Def Strategy

Though it's not likely to quell ongoing speculation, Warner today is denying reports that the studio will follow in Paramount's footsteps drop its dual-support of both HD DVD and Blu-ray.

The rumors began earlier this week, after fellow dual-format supporter Paramount announced it would exclusively release its movies on HD DVD, but reached a fever pitch late Thursday, when Warner VP Steve Nickerson -- the studio's high-def point person, and the industry's cheerleader for dual-format support -- announced he would leave Warner.

Now, in a new article posted by Video Business, Warner Home Video spokesman Jim Noonan says that Nickerson's departure should not be taken to suggest an upcoming shift in the studio’s high-def operations.

"This is not about a change in strategy," Noonan said. "This is completely [Nickerson's] call, and he will be missed. He is smart and a workhorse."

Meanwhile, Warner has announced that Dorinda Marticorena will take on Nickerson's previous role as senior VP of high-def. Currently VP of kids and sports marketing at Warner Home Video, the studio says Marticorena will contine Nickerson's efforts to promote the mainstream adoption of both high-def formats.

A good read I saw at the AVSforum

Ending the HDTV DVD War

-- By Joseph Whip

It has been an amazing week in the world of High Definition media (HDM) on the Internet forums starting with the Paramount/Dreamworks HD-DVD exclusivity announcement. Fanboys or both red and blu persuasions have been working overdrive spinning the announcement this way and that, proclaiming that their side would be victorious. While some of the postings on sites have been amusing, some have been downright deceitful or libelous, uncalled for and beneath us as HT enthusiasts. To calls of payoffs, the Microsoft behind it all and wanting to rule the world, to Michael Bay being a savior to then being a villain to Steven Spielberg releasing only on BD and not HD, not ever and Sony being the root of all evil. People posting claiming big news which will end the war, only to disappear when nothing happens as they said it would. Ok, nevermind! All very sad really.

An example of how things can get out of hand is the announcement that Steve Nickerson a SVP at Warner Brothers was resigning. Given claims that WB was about to make some big announcement, the fanboys were all a twitter, claiming that this meant that WB was going BD exclusive as Mr. Nickerson was pro HD to no he was pro BD and this meant HD exclusivity. In reality, no one posting had a clue who Mr. Nickerson is and whether it meant anything. Maybe he just wanted to spend more time with his family? Guys, get a life! We will find out soon enough whether it means anything at all. Most likely, it does not.

The other main issue posted on the boards is how to end the war. Swanni has even chimed in on three ways that BD can win the war. Maybe so, but at this point, it seems to me that there is only one side that can end the war quickly, and that is HD not BD. The best that BD can hope is to win a war of attrition that will last a couple more years and hope to gain such an edge on software sales to force the hands of the HD exclusive or neutral studios to give up the ghost. On the other hand, HD has the combo and dual disc hand to play, one which BD has not. The combo disc is a flipper, having HD on one side and SD on the other. The dual disc does the same but does not require flipping the disc over. Some HD owners hate the idea of combos, mostly due to the added cost, making, in the case of WB, the BD discs being $5 cheaper than the combo, which in and of itself may explain some of the sales figures of 300 in favor of BD. I like them.

However, with Paramount now HD exclusive, it is possible that Universal, Paramount and Warners can get together and abandon DVD only releases for their films and release HD/DVD combos only. They would, of course, have to price them more like DVDs and give up their
insane HDM price points. I would suggest a $19.99 msrp. The almost immediate result will be sales of millions upon millions of HD DVD discs almost overnight. What will the Nielsen rankings look like then?

Consumers could buy the discs in confidence knowing that they will always have the DVD side. With numerous discs in the house, they would be more inclined to buy an HD player to take advantage of the much better picture and sound on the other side of the disc. With HD player approaching $199 and lower soon, HD players will reach the point of impulse buys, further fueling sales of the HD discs. The combos would also be travel friendly, as they will play on portable DVD player, laptops and car players as well. Combos are impossible for BD as the DVD Forum will not permit them. I just can't imagine families buying a BD for the house and a separate DVD of the same film for travel purposes. All of this, of course, hinges on the price of the discs. It would be impossible for Fox and Disney to resist entering such a market were it to come to pass. With Fox and Disney becoming neutral, the war would be as good as over.

I acknowledge that what I am proposing would be a bold move by the studios. However, if they want to end the war and do so quickly, it is the most logical alternative.

A very bold move indeed if it happens.  Abandoning DVD-only releases and releasing only HD/DVD combos??  I have though about that too. If these studios would really want mass adoption of their preferred format, then this strategy would be it.

I never liked "flippers" dvd. It's prone to scratches.

I think thats a very good idea, cos if they can lower down prices of combos to dvd price point then it wud mean chain of reaction that will encourage average consumers to adopt HD. they wud think:

first, 'why buy s-dvd when i can hav combo w/ HD included at same price?'

second, 'why wudn't i buy hd-dvd player since i already have the media on my combo?'

and third, 'now that i already have an HD DVD player, there's no reason for me to use the other side of the disc' good reason to cut down price even more.

DVD Forum must take this seriously, there are lots of people out there even hardcore videophiles who has full HD equipments but find prices of HDM still expensive and that sets them back fr. adopting it.

actually if those studios abandon the DVD-only releases, the consumers would have no option but to get the combo of a particular movie title.  Unfortunately, that looks force-feeding to me.  But if you can market them as DVDs with the bonus HD version, and price them within the vicinity of DVD pricing levels, then acceptance would be no problem.  If these studios really would want to accelerate the adoption process while taking a initial hit in earnings, then they should consider this strategy heavily.

or make that ' . . . w/ HD included at almost the same price?' since HD is more expensive to produce there's no way, at this point, combos can directly match the price of dvds. but maybe anything affordable for the mainstream crowd's pocket is enough . . . additional 3-5 dollars if thats possible.

I also hate flippers. If they do this hopefully price is below 20 dollars (adoption will be faster)..But thats a long shot I think.

yeah, admittedly, a lot of people hate flippers.   They are prone to scratches, and many times, you make mistakes on what side to play.  But if the HD DVD studios go "combos only" day and date release, that 2-1 Blu-ray media software advantage would be wiped out faster than you think.

The End of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD War

Introduction

For the last year, the HD-DVD Promotional Group and Blu-ray Disc Alliance have been fighting a fierce war. At stake is control of the next-generation home video format and billions of dollars.

A week ago, it looked as if Blu-ray was going to be the winner of the HD battle. The momentum of Blu-ray was increasing with Blu-ray movies such as 300 outselling the HD-DVD counterpart by almost 2:1. In fact, one week ago, Universal remained the only HD-DVD exclusive studio. If you were interested in movies from every other major studio, Blu-ray was the smart choice. It would only be a matter of time before Universal caved in and went dual-format and Blu-ray’s victory was imminent.

On August 20, 2007, Paramount and Dreamworks Pictures changed the course of the war. After being a format neutral studio in the last year, Paramount elected to switch to HD-DVD exclusively for an 18 month period. Those looking to get Transformers in high-definition or any movie from Paramount Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Vantage, Nickelodeon Movies, and MTV Films, and Dreamworks Animation would now need to go to the HD DVD camp; Steven Spielberg’s movies being the sole exception. The New York Times has since reported that Paramount’s and DreamWorks Animation’s decision was driven by $150 million of financial incentives.

While most of the commentary has focused on the possibility of a prolonged battle between the HD DVD and Blu-ray camps, Paramount’s decision to go HD DVD exclusive has the best chance of ending this battle once-and-for-all.

Think I’m crazy? I am crazy… crazy like a fox.

But it’s complicated…

Dami na Hd DVD and Blu-ray sa Top 25 ng Amazon as of this posting....

7.  Heroes- Season 1 (HD DVD)
8.  300 (HD DVD)
11. 300 (Blu-ray)
14. Casino Royale (Blu-ray)
16. POTC-CotBP (Blu-ray)
24. Shaun of the Dead (HD DVD)
25. Boune Supremacy (HD DVD)

and there are 19 other HD titles combined (7 BD, 12 HD DVD) which are in the Top 100 rankings.   I have never seen so much HD titles in the top 100 before.....a total of 26 titles!!!    Hmmmm...I think the Paramount shift did the format more good.  It created publicity.....awareness and more adopters???

PS....pwede rin ito...marami sa mga early adopters ang nag eexpire na ang kanilang 10 percent off sa HD promo ng Amazon...

Heto pala ang culprit, me promo rin pala....buy 2 get a 3rd for free.... ;D ;D

Universal Launches New HD DVD Website

Further pushing the boundaries of HD DVD interactivity, Universal has launched a new consumer high-def promotional and support web site promising exclusive web-enabled content.

The studio-created site, dubbed Universal Studios Home Entertainment Hi Def, is designed to be an extensive consumer portal for all things Universal HD DVD. Among the site's offerings are a FAQ covering the format's current interactive features, extensive technical support (including connection issues and a breakdown of common software and hardware error codes) and previews of upcoming releases.

But most exciting are a number of site sections still under construction, which seem to suggest that the studio is planning to use the site as a launching pad for future web-enabled content. Labeled "Coming Soon" are several features, including something called "U-Shop," which apparently will allow consumers to buy exclusive products while they watch the movie; "Best Buddies," where fans will be able to send friends pointers to favorite clips on a given an HD DVD title via the studio's "MyScenes" feature; and a dedicated Download Center.

Universal is also promising that additional content will be made available only to registered users of the site, including trailers and other exclusive material.

Blu-ray partners confirm no sweetner from Sony

Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, MGM and Sony Pictures have all confirmed on the record to Pocket-lint that they have not accepted sweeteners from the Blu-ray association.

The response follows a direct question from Pocket-lint following rumours that the HD DVD forum paid Paramount and Dreamworks to sign exclusively with the format.

Although all the studio's present confirmed that they hadn't accepted sweeteners from the Blu-ray disc association, Stephen Foulser, Marketing VP Europe for Disney opted for a "No comment" statement, raising questions amongst industry commentators.

Studio execs visibly wriggled on stage as they were put the Yes/No only question in front of a packed audience of journalists at IFA 2007 in Berlin, Germany.

Blu-ray Dominates HD Sales
Posted August 31, 2007 by Josh

New data from Home Media Research shows that Blu-ray is continuing to lead in high definition media sales. As of August 5th, the top 10 best selling high definition movies are all available on Blu-ray, and half of those exclusive to the format. Warner Brother's '300' leads the pack, followed by 'The Departed', 'Casino Royale', 'Planet Earth', and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'.

Noticeably absent from the list is Universal who didn't have a title which sold enough copies break into the top 20. Paramount made it to 17th with their release of 'Babel', but if there wasn't a Blu-ray version of the title, it would have fall well short making the list. All Blu-ray studios were represented in the Top 20 (including Lionsgate with their release of 'Crank').

Universal Says "I Do" to 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry' on HD DVD

In an early announcement, Universal Studios Home Entertainment says it is planning a November HD DVD wedding reception for the Adam Sandler summer blockbuster, 'I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry.

Although the studio stopped short of issuing an exact street date for film (which is still in theaters), it is promising an HD DVD edition sometime in the month of November, day-and-date with a standard-def DVD.

Tech specs are set to include a 1080p/VC-1 transfer, along with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 Surround tracks.

HD DVD player price to drop further in Q4

The high-definition format war will hit a new low in the fourth quarter—price, that is.

Canada’s Venturer Electronics is set to release Chinese-manufactured HD DVD players priced below $200.

Venturer's SHD7000 will be priced at $199, according to a company representative, which would make it the cheapest stand-alone HD DVD player available today.

To date, Toshiba has the lowest priced stand-alone player, its entry level HD-A2 $299 model.

Hitting a new HD DVD hardware pricing low could be what tips on-the-fence consumers to embrace the high-def format. But many retailers, including Wal-Mart, Ultimate Electronics and Bjorn’s, say they are not committed to carrying the Venturer player, preferring instead to underscore products from bigger brand companies.

“We have no plans to have Venturer in our stores this holiday,” Wal-Mart merchandise spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien said. “We will continue to offer the best values on popular HD DVD and Blu-ray products from leading consumer brands like Sony, Samsung, Philips, Toshiba and RCA.”

Wal-Mart does sell some Venturer portable DVD players on its Web site.

Ultimate Electronics’ director of merchandising for video Matt Duda is considering stocking the Venturer HD DVD player, but he doesn’t expect a major swing in the format war until a better-known company, such as Toshiba or Sony, rolls out a sub-$200 player.

“I have never heard of Venturer,” admits Duda. “If the price [similarly drops] for a tier-one brand, that will be more compelling.”

Research firm Understanding & Solutions believes the Venturer player could push the established companies to compete with their own price cuts.

“At this early stage in the market development, consumers generally want branded product,” said Jim Bottoms, U&S director. “But low-priced non-branded players force the branded suppliers to review their pricing.”

Sales of DVD players began skyrocketing when prices fell nearer to $100, acknowledge retailers. But unlike the earlier stages of DVD, the high-def format split could stop many consumers from investing.

“The only time a price can really stimulate demand is if that demand is already there,” said David Workman, director of the Progressive Retailers Organization. “But I’m not sure demand is there. I think the recent Paramount news [about releasing titles in HD DVD exclusively] has polarized software companies even more, so there is further format stalemate. And consumers are still comparing high-def players against the price of [standard-def] players. A $199 player is still an expensive DVD player for people.”

Bjorn Dybdahl, owner of San Antonio store Bjorn’s, added, “Because of the confusion over formats, some people wouldn’t spend $50 on a product that they perceive might not be around for very long.”

Some retailers, such as Value Electronics, are already rallying around the Venturer player. Value president Robert Zohn said he is ordering 1,000 to 1,200 units, and he expects he could start selling them as early as October.

Zohn believes that $199 will be the right carrot to dangle in front of hesitant customers. When Value slashed Toshiba’s entry-level model to $199 in a promotion, the chain sold 400 units within 30 hours and had to prematurely shut the sale down.

“When it gets to a certain price point, the thing takes off like a rocket,” said Zohn, who prefers the HD DVD format over Blu-ray. “That price point moves an enormous amount of HD players.”

Venturer’s SHD7000 features 1080i video output, Ethernet connectivity and advanced audio technology Dolby TrueHD. In addition to HD DVD and CD playback, the model also upconverts standard-def DVDs to near high-def quality through an HDMI connection. The player will be distributed nationally to retailers.

For months, HD DVD backers have said Chinese manufacturers would soon start producing ultra-low-price players, likely impacting the format war. Venturer represents the first such company to potentially get the ball rolling.

A statement from Venturer, whose North American headquarters is in Markham, Ontario, touts the player “to be one of the lowest among entry-level HD DVD players.”

HD DVD Day at IFA 2007

It was the HD DVD camp's turn in the spotlight today at IFA (the European consumer electronics trade fair), with several HD DVD supporting companies speaking out at a well-attended press conference.

While yesterday's BDA press conference was heavy on new hardware announcements for the European market, the HD DVD camp took a decidely different approach, focusing less on new products and more on what its backers see as the format's advantages over Blu-ray.

The centerpiece of the presentation was a brief appearance by Chris Saito of Paramount, the company that famously shook up the high-def format war earlier this month when it announced it would drop support of Blu-ray, and would instead exclusively back HD DVD.

Saito said that his company's decision came after a year's worth of evaluation, and was based on the format being the best value not only to consumers, but to Paramount as well, in terms of cost of replication.

Other speakers at the comference emphasized the format's "ever growing list of worldwide supporters," its affordability, its lead in stand-alone player sales, and its higher attach rates, (4 discs per player, 7 times that of BD).

"The HD format is about stand-alone players, not game systems. We don’t think gamers will buy movies," said HD DVD Promo Group co-chairman Ken Graffeo.

In a direct dig at the BDA, Graffeo pointed to the HD DVD group's mandatory interactive specs, stating that all HD DVD players are required to support the format's advanced interactive features. "Sadly, that's not the case with Blu-ray," said Graffeo. "Many Blu-ray owners will only get advanced features if they buy the next-generation players".
