Very nice review sir Mark! Congrats! ;)

No plans on upgrading your amps? hehe IMO, mas bagay diyan yung mga ultra hi-end amps dahil ultra hi-end din si Stella. ;D Maganda na siya ngayon with the Emotiva monoblocks pero I'm sure malaki pa ang potential niyan.

Maybe you also want to try changing the cables. I was also a non-believer before until recently when I found out that they do make a significant difference in sound. Especially with your system, I'm sure you will hear even the most subtle differences. :D

And for music/audio, bagay diyan yung Studio Master recordings. These are real 24bit music files usually at 88.2/96/192Khz. Medyo may kamahalan ang albums pero mas maganda ang tunog. :D

Just sharing my recent discoveries. hehe :)

Hi Paul!

I suspect that if you have an all-analog system, you might hear differences in cables and amps. The cables and amps behave like crude audio processors, somehow affecting the sound.

However, if you use an all-digital system and do extensive audio digital processing (as I do through Audyssey MultEQ Pro), the effects of those devices is negated and they are therefore not useful.

In my room in particular, since it is relatively narrow, the sound is heavily influenced by boundary effects (the proximity of the speakers to the walls) and without proper equalization, there is a distinct boominess which is not pleasant to hear. I've listened to my old speakers (Maestros) in their new room which is much wider than mine and somehow the boominess is much less than in my room. In other words, the room plays a huge part of the sound and if you don't apply corrections for the effect of the room, the sound will not be great.

In addition, there are a lot of the following material floating in the net, for amps, cables, high-res audio, etc. and a lot of the material is quite compelling: http://www.matrixhifi.com/contenedor_ppec_eng.htm

In lieu of cables and amps, this is what I'd prefer: http://www.cine4home.de/tests/projektoren/Sony_VPL-VW1000/Sony_VW1000_Preview.htm

4k projector. 4x more resolution than Bluray. It can upscale Bluray to a beautiful 4k picture.  ;D ;D

i share the same experience sir mark. the Ultra in my old house sounded really nice but with the same amount of room treatment and an even lower gain setting, the ultra sounded way better than the old room compared to the new room. the old one measures 3 M by 3M while the new one 4M by 5M with the side walls not in parallel.

You're using EQ nga po pala even for audio playback so baka nga negligible yung effect ng cables. Pero sa amp maaaring mas maging more fuller sounding, more dynamic, effortless and more controlled yung tunog kung mag-upgrade kayo ng better and beefier amps na magma-match kay Stella. Pa-home audition po kayo kay Hansen nung mga hi-end amps nila tutal there's no harm in trying and it's fun. hehe ;D If you don't notice any difference at least you're sure na maximized na talaga si Stella with the Emotivas.

Actually before hindi rin ako naniniwala sa difference between cables. Iniisip ko din na baka psychological lang. Until katuwaan lang nagpa-blind test ako to verify kasi ayaw ko nga maniwala. And yun nga may difference akong nadinig. Tapos nakahiram ako ng silver cables. Pagkabit ko pa lang, dinig kaagad yung difference. From a warm sounding system, naging mas neutral, numipis yung boses which I think is better kasi mas tama yung size ng singer at mas dinig yung nuances. Mas naging tunog bakal and airy din yung cymbals. Kaya lang compared to my old cable, wala masyadong bass and impact. Mas engaging, dynamic and fuller sounding yung dating cable. Kaya ngayon searching for a more balanced-sounding cable. Gusto kong makuha yung best of both worlds kung meron ganun. hehe ;D

Yan pala yung sinasabi niyong 4k resolution na projector! :o Nagorder na po kayo?
Bagay na bagay yan sa HT niyo. ;)

I think the Stella's woofer doesn't require strong amplification.

@Sir Mark:

Is this easier to drive than your previous Focal?

Yup. The higher efficiency is apparently due to the electromagnet, which is much more powerful than an ordinary magnet. With the same amp, you need a slightly lower gain to reach the same reference level.

The Emotiva XPA-1 amp has a rating of 1000 watts @ 4 ohms and, based on the LED level meter on the front panel, it rarely goes above 40% capacity. Maybe the highest has been 65%. Part of the reason is that I actually have a 40 Hz crossover for the Stellas.

Have you tried running it at full range w/o xover in stereo compared to cutting it at 40hz w/ sub?

A square room or a cube room is the worst room for a HT/Audio room. It is also difficult to treat. So its good that you now have a rectangular room.

For cables, what's important is that it's neutral. Cables should not accentuate or degrade the sound. A good recording should sound good while a bad recording should sound bad in a neutral cable. A neutral cable does not become a tone control.

Equalization components merely corrects the room's acoustic response due to shortcomings of the room acoustics.

Maski di naman treated ang palace HT room mo, eh 300 square meters ang HT room mo eh. Sa lawak nun, minimal treatment na lang.

Mali. Meters talaga.  ;D

Pero master, properly treating a room can be also considered a very good audio upgrade. Nag-iiba ang SQ ng gears in a treated room.  ;)

Wala naman ako iuupgrade, kasi wala ako system (unless CD-R King speakers count). Saka wala din ako dedicated room to treat.

OT ka na.
