For some time, I have been unhappy with my surround speaker set-up:

This was composed of 2 JBL XPL-series speakers hooked in parallel in a dipole set-up. The problem was that with aggressive surround effects, you could often notice that the sound was coming from the rear of the room. This is not correct. Surround sounds should most often be non-localizable. It is a diffuse sound and you don’t know where it is coming from.

To solve this problem, I determined that I had to do two things:

1. Mount the speakers high (which I couldn’t do with my very heavy set of surrounds).

2. Install a second set of surround speakers towards the front of the room, preferably dipoles so as to enhance the diffuseness of the sound.

After some research, I decided to get 2 pairs of Paradigm ADP-370’s:

While the speakers look tiny in my large HT and when compared to the other speakers, I figured that they were sufficient, considering that each speaker has 2 x 6.5” woofers and 2 x 1” tweeters. That means that when I use all 4 speakers, each channel has 4 x 6.5” woofers and 4 x 1” tweeters.

Since the ceiling at the rear of my HT is 14’8” high, I mounted the speakers around 9’ high, using DIY brackets which allow me to easily remove the speakers for maintenance purposes.

The result is pretty good. I feel I accomplished what I set out to achieve. The surround sounds are now quite diffuse and seem to really fill up the room.

Issue: Isn’t it better to get surrounds which are the same brand and model as the rest of the speakers? Theoretically, this is true. However, I believe that the surround speakers are a less critical component of the audio experience because they mainly provide ambience. Furthermore, with the use of the Audyssey room correction, you achieve a better tonal balance among all your speakers.

My front and center speakers are both PSB Stratus models and I guess that is what is most critical.

As an added comment, I have noticed that the surround speakers use much less power than the front or center speakers. Therefore, I decided to use the internal power amp of the Denon 3808. Since the 3808 has 140 watts per speaker and I have 2 speakers per surround channel, I effectively have 280 watts per channel. This means that I have now freed up my Aragon 4004 power amp – I now have a spare amp in case the power amps for the front or center blows.

For some time now, I had realized that given the distance between my screen and viewing position, the screen was too small. The best reference I have seen for this purpose is the following link which was posted by Munskie:

http://www.carltonbale.com/home-theater/home-theater-calculator/

The problem is that I could not move my viewing position forward beyond a certain point because of the location of my equipment rack. Therefore, I had to increase the size of the screen. Furthermore, my projector does not have a huge light output. In order to improve the light output, my screen had a gain of 2.8. In addition, I discovered a very useful tweak from AVS Forum which results in a huge increase in light output through the service menu. In spite of this, my light output measured only 12 ft-lamberts, which is the minimum. The next bigger screen was 133”, as opposed to my 119” screen and this has 25% more area. This would reduce the light output below the minimum standard.

The only way to jack up my light output would be to purchase a new projector lamp. Unfortunately, the replacement lamp for the Sony VPL-VW100 is extremely expensive. Again, I discovered through AVS Forum that instead of purchasing the standard replacement lamp, which includes a big housing (including heat sinks), you could purchase just the lamp from certain vendors at 30% of the cost. The downside is that you would have to open up the housing:

I found the replacement lamp from eBay, purchased it through Paypal and had it delivered through JAC. No problems.

I got a contractor friend of mine to help bring down the projector, carefully disassemble the lamp housing and install the new lamp. No problems.

After all of this, I had to get my friend John from AV Driver to help me in the calibration of the projector. It took us more than 3 hours but the result was great.

The end-result is pretty good. The screen is huge. The light-output is initially at 22 ft-lamberts, which is on the high end of the standard, but I expect this to go down rapidly over the next few months, as the lamp ages.

A few days after the Pacquiao-de la Hoya fight, I got to watch it in high definition and it was incredible on the bigger screen and with the new lamp.

In addition to all these, I have also acquired a few more goodies:

1) 2 more 1 terabyte external hard drives for my eGreat. That makes 3 x 1 terabyte external drives + 1 x 500 GB internal drive.

2) A spare HD DVD player – a Toshiba HD-A3.

I have decided to pause on the upgrade path. I have made huge changes in my HT over the past year and I think it is time to stop and start enjoying movies, rather than continuously tweak the system. Besides that, I have a huge inventory of unwatched films which will probably take me two years to finish.

Famous last words. Hehe.

Merry Christmas!! Happy SARS day!!  ;D

Congrats! sir Mark for the improvements you've made to your already wonderful HT.

I agree that your surrounds were too noticeable in my last visit to the point that it was distracting the viewing experience.

Mounting your  new surrounds definitely was the way to go. Hope to hear it soon  ;)

Merry Christmas!!! God Bless!!!

The difference in price between a simple lamp and the whole housing is huge. Takot din ako magkalas ng pj but at AVS Forum, some guys even posted step-by-step instructions and pictures kaya lumakas ang loob ko. In this hobby, kailangan talaga research ng husto and DIY. Otherwise, sobra gastos!  :)

Ang galing naman ng Christmas greeting mo! Thanks a lot, Alvin and Merry Christmas din!

Alam mo naman that we talked for a long time about the bigger screen and new lamp. You were correct. Now, I think I will change my lamp every year.  ;D

Actually, pinag-iisipan ko din ang offer ni Ashley on the PSB Synchrony One speakers ... But maybe in 2010!  ;D ;D

Have a blessed holiday.

Thanks, Alvin. Merry Christmas din to you and your family!  :)

Nagbilang nga ako. This year, we organized 7 EB's:
1) alvinthx2 in January
2) HT ko in February
3) munskie in April
4) alvinthx2 in May
5) Shoot-out #1 sa HT ko in July
6) Shoot-out #2 sa HT ko in September
7) Xmas EB sa HT ko in November

We need more guys to host EB's, kahit mini-EB lang like the EB sa HT ni dts-hd (4 kami). This year, I must have met 40 of the greatest guys in the planet through these EB's.  :) :)

Juancho, Martin, Doc, Jesse and everyone else, thanks for the greetings! Merry Christmas to everyone in Pinoydvd!  :) :)

Iba talaga ang Pinoy. I don't think there is any other country in the world that has such a grand Christmas holiday season. Sabi ko nga sa friends ko that I have been in London and Paris during the Christmas season and those cities look absolutely dead compared to the Christmas decor and lights that you find in Manila!  :) :)
