after researching last night, i've decided to buy an hd-dvd player (most likely the A2) instead of an upscaling dvd player. at US$220, that comes to only P10,120 (assuming my credit card charges me at about P46=US$1, higher than prevailing rate of P44 or so). I will choose the A2 because my tv's resolution is only 1024 x 768, wasting the capabilities of 1080p models. An upscaling dvd player, on the other hand will cost about 7k, give or take a few hundred pesos, with no marked improvement in video quality.

i'm just trying to convince my friend, who will have a box shipped from the US, to accomodate my request na isali ang A2 (to her detriment, kasi mababawasan ang space for her).  My only other concern is that baka mawala, during the shipment. goodbye p10K, pag nagkataon.

In the alternative, I could ship via JAC. pero from what i've read in another post, JAC charged about 6k due to the box used.

or maybe i should get the A3, which comes with 300 and Bourne Identity free? Pag nag price drop eto when it is released to about 250, it may be worth the extra $$ to get the 2 dvds. choices, choices.

Is HDA2 and HDA20 the same?

If not, which performs better used on a 32 - 37" HDTV (720p/1080i ready only) and of course, how much is the retail price of it?

P.S.- I have a PS3 already and I can use it as my bd player already - but I am wondering if getting a stand alone bd player would be worthit or I should just stick to the PS3 for viewing movies since I am a kind of a gamer too nowadays. sorry if it's a bit OT here.. ;)

@fait,

no, they're not. the HD-A2O is a higher model, it can output up to 1080p already. the HD-A2 is only up to 1080i.

the HD-A2 and the HD-A20 are HD-DVD players, though, and not  blu ray. So the discs you play via ps3 won't play with these players.

retail price in the US is US$220 for the A2, not too sure about the A20. just check amazon. both players aren't readily available here.

it might interest you to know that Jeff of Theaterworks is thinking of bringing in the HD-A35 (the newer and higher end model) for 29k.  I think Sights and Sounds is also offering the HD-A20 in the 30k range and the HD-XA2 (the highest end model so far, whether 2nd gen or 3rd gen) at about 40K range. Just PM them both.

@tonedeaf, I posted a reply to your query in the Plasma thread. :)

@Fait, I was informed that InfoMax is carrying the HD-A2 at around peso 19k. HDTV size 32 - 37" with native resolution 720p or 1080i, the HD-A2 should the job.  ;)

My friend bought the A2 model in amazon and ship thru JAC. His total cost is 18k with 2 free hd dvds. I think the price of 19k sa infomax is quite reasonable na. May 1 yr warranty pa ata.

I wonder who will be interested in pooling orders for HDA3... seems to be the best buy for lower end users like me. I mean A30 really dont have much difference over A3, especially with it's faulty 1080p output in non-1080p/24-compatible hdtvs - as per cnet's review. Not worth the extra dough, daw.

Anyone? I really cant wait to get my hands on this.

Can anyone confirm this?

Ang A2 kasi dinadown convert ang True HD sa DTS at 1.5 mbps, at ang A3 naman ay dinadown convert ang True HD sa Dolby Digital at 640kps.

is this true?

Hehe I see...tnx for the translation bro ET414.  ;D

@dede: Concerning the Tosh HD-A2, it has an internal TrueHD decorder & output as LPCM via HDMI to your AV receiver. So, if you have a HDMI equipped receiver, then you can still enjoy the lossless TrueHD audio.

However, if you only use the digital optical cable (Toshlink), yes the TrueHD will downcovert to DTS @1.5mbps. As for the HD-A3, it should have similar functions.

**Edited: If you use optical cable out in the HD-A3, yes it will downconvert to Dolby Digital 640kbps. Hmm..in this case it make sense to get the HD-A2 if you will be using the optical cable only since the price is very low.

Circuit City, Amazon Join $198 HD DVD Player Club (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Looks like everyone's jumping aboard the $198 HD-A2 gravy train. Added mention of Amazon.com's recent listing of the player.

Wal-Mart isn't the only retailer offering Toshiba's HD-A2 HD DVD player at the record low price of $198.

As we've previously reported, the discount retailer made headlines last week when it confirmed that it would carry Toshiba's second-gen 1080i HD DVD player for less than $200.

Now both Circuit City and Amazon.com have joined the fray, offering the same deck for a penny less (at $197.99). Even better, unlike Wal-Mart, both retailers have extended the discounted price on the HD-A2 to online sales.

At press time, it wasn't clear how long these retailers plan to stock the discounted player. We do know that Toshiba plans to release a new comparable entry-level third-gen player (the HD-A3) sometime in November.

Speaking with Fortune Magazine last week, a Wal-Mart spokesperson disputed earlier reports that the player would only be made available in limited number, saying "There are no limited quantities for stores or purchases."

Probably it's best to wait a few more weeks for the Black Friday Nov 23rd to see what Amazon's cooking. :)

Assuming you have the latest firmware update, the HD-A1 can decode TrueHD & output via either HDMI or analog 5.1  to your receiver.

It should have. Then you can use the analog 5.1 to enjoy TrueHD :)

Eh...sanmig, I'm a bit lost here. It appears that you're aware the HD-A1 can decode TrueHD & output via analog 5.1 but why are you asking the question. ???

Regret my Tagalog isn't good but from what I can understand it seems that your real situation is you don't like using the analog connection because the signal "TrueHD" won't be displayed in your receiver? I thought it's more important if you're concerned about enjoying the lossless audio rather than worrying the name- not appearing on the receiver noh LOL  ;D

If that's the case then I guess the solution is to acquire a new HDMI receiver with TrueHD decoder AND a player that can output TrueHD bitstream!  ;)

sorry paul i just want to confirm coz i still did not try it with true hd na cd.
ill try it with dolby digital plus hddvd only to 5.1 analog but ordinary rca and hard to listen the difference
kasi dolby digital plus unlike siguro sa dolby true hd may big difference siguro.
out pa sa budget to purchase those hd with true hd & still
waiting for sale on amazon like the bluray buy 1 take1 ;D

for me its important pa din to listen & enjoy the true hd rather than display on receiver.
sayang lang kasi walang display if only we can upgrade our processor to display the true hd mas ok sana :D

This will knock the socks off from anyone wanting to get an HD-DVD player.

Quote
Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player: $100, this Friday, Wal-Mart

Still waiting to jump into the high def disc game? Or just wanted another weaker, cheaper player for the last-gen TV you phased out to your rumpus room? Well, whatever your reasons, some (not all!) Wal-Mart locations will be selling Toshiba HD-A2s for $100 -- down from $200 -- this Friday. Ridiculous, we know. Blu-ray gonna fight back? We hope so, we'd really like to get our hands on one for under $300, and not just by using our hookup that sells gear out of his trunk, you know?

URL: http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/01/toshiba-hd-a2-hd-dvd-player-100-this-friday-wal-mart/

The player only outputs at 1080i max, but this model supports DTS-HD (core), and DTS Encore 5.1 output. Enjoy!  ;D
