question re dual voice coil sub
« on: May 06, 2008 at 07:17 PM »
My current bedroom system is set up this way

cdplayer->preamp->active crossover->amp for midbass upwards->stereo bookshelves
                                                 ->amp for sub->mono passive sub with dual voice coil

I am using only one channel of the amp for the sub to power one of the voice coils of the sub.

The amp is not bridgeable. Is it ok if I use the other channel to power the other voice coil?

Thanks

as what i have learned in car audio, powering 1 VC is a no no. but heard car sub setups that used only 1 VC due to amp limitations or mis-matched sub impedance to amp. to maximize the life of the sub, both VC must be used by either connecting them in Series or in Parallel. hence, you must have the right amplifier that is suitable to power the final sub impedance.

powering each VC with a stereo amp would be better than powering only 1 VC. but the amp's output (left and right channel) must equally produce power to prolong the sub's life.

use the other channel to power the other VC, if you can (or if your active xover has this feature), make sure that the signal going to the amp is a mono signal.
