for the pixelation issue, i believe this is due to the MKV not being dxva compliant.. i have played those hi bitrate 1080p's (dark knight, tropic thunder, wanted, mummy, etc) that is dxva compliant and so far no issues encountered.. i tried robots 1080p which is not dxva compliant then the pixelation occurs.. kahit PC kung di naka dxva encoded yung MKV medyo hirap din talaga.. good thing most of my 1080p's are dxva compliant.. for 720p, whether dxva or not, no issues so far..

perhaps the same can be said of Clondalkin's case , since not all .mkv files are made the same way. Others tend to use up more resources than is normally required.

back to the main topic "WD TV HD Media Player" may I ask what 18gb 1080p .mkv file  it was that you may have had issues with? I would like to check if the WD media player can handle it. Thanks

The Pentium D powered machine has issues with practically all 1080ps but none with m2ts.  I was just replying to the question of whether m2ts is always bigger than mkv in terms of size and video bitrate when I mentioned about the 18GB file.

Anyway, that 18GB movie s*cks. - that movie starring a young star being phoned by a PC named ARIA.  If you think it's worth your time, then go ahead and try.   Otherwise, I would suggest any 1080p bigger than 8GB.   Some title that you really like.  That should push the WDTV well.  Try to test both DXVA compliant and non DXVA compliant files.  Good luck.

By the way, kaya ba ng WDTV ang m2ts?

I believe that's what the guy at TPC was trying to share -- that the WDTV can handle BD backups in .m2ts format .
In my experience  the WDTV has been able to playback  all the 1080p .mkv internal releases without problems, with the exception of a few 1080p scene releases .

fyi  .. Using a Macally USB/Firewire/eSata enclosure for my 1TB seagate 7200.11 resulted in stuttering 1080p mkv playback , after replacing it with Thermaltake's BlacX USB/eSata dock , stutters were completely gone.

Thanks very much for the heads up!  Ang bilis nyo talaga sa balita!

Note: Avsforum members report firmware upgrade crashes.  They recommend disconnecting the My Passport and using a small-capacity (around 2GB) thumb drive for a smooth upgrade process.

Update:  Successfully flashed my firmware.  I used a 4GB Imation thumb drive.  Process completed in about 5 mins.

Based sa comment ni Rubenpp, it looks positive because the "large ones" are usually encoded by the internal groups and they are mostly DXVA compliant.  In my case, this is just an inference because I havent even smelt the WDTV.   But yeah, Id like this particular device to work extremely well on the MKVs.  The other functions, or the lack of them,  dont matter at all to me.

Hi Rubenpp. It would be a big favor if you could test the Eureka encoded Matrix Trilogy on the WDTV - the 47GB 1080p version.  Watching it right now on a PC (it's a National Holiday in Tokyo) connected to a Plasma, and it's absolutely WOW!  Got to compare this one to the original HD DVD later.

whats the diff between m2ts from mkv?

m2ts is the file extension of the movie in a BluRay disc.  The file size of the movie in TDK Bluray is 32.66gb while those of re-encoded TDK mkvs are smaller since they contain compressed video and audio.

I found no problem playing m2ts of TDK in NMT.  1080p playback in NMT is generally smooth but not always flawless.  I experience choppy playback in NMT (1 out of 10 1080p movies) like Godfather 1080p ESir (most part of the film), Iron Man 1080 EuReKa (x264, not remux; 2-3 scenes) and Kung Fu Panda 1080p ESiR (1 or 2 scenes).  I wonder if they will play flawlessly in WDTV.  If so, WDTV is the bomb.  :)

Hi Clondalkin

I have the hd-dvd as well , and have quite a few of the 1080p files from the other internal groups like Esir ,CTRLHD, Bobby etc
but eventually delete those after i've bought the discs. I'll check if my brother has the files you requested and test when i get it.

nice, can't wait to test it out :>  these upgrades addressed a lot of my initial minuses against the unit :>

for the record, for average people looking to enjoy HD, then this is it.  the issues i encountered were more of exceptions rather than the rule.  granted i haven't watched as many movies compared to some of the other folks, this is where a forum such as this one would help us assess the performance of this nifty little device :>

Follow the exact steps and u get the following:-

1. Open the firmware update .ZIP file and extract the two files (.BIN and .VER) to a USB drive's main directory

Note:
The USB drive must be formatted NTFS or FAT32. HFS+ is not supported for firmware updates.
Turn the WD TV on and connect your USB drive

2. Use the remote control to select SETTINGS from the home screen
3. Highlight the firmware upgrade icon, and press ENTER on the remote

4. You will be prompted to perform the firmware upgrade. Select OK and press ENTER. This will restart the system

5. After restarting, the system automatically enters firmware upgrade mode

6. Once the update process is completed, the HD media player will restart again
