Tama yan.

Sir Barrister, what do you mean by this statement? Are you saying that PCH is better at playing 1080p files than WD?  mabagal ba sa WD or di talaga kaya?  I do understand the difference between WD and the NMTs out there tho i'm not sure i want the full feature that NMT gives me so i'm leaning towards WDTV.  It wouldn't hurt that the price is cheaper as well :)  TIA!

Not all 1080p(in my case) can be played properly by WD. I observed pixelations with several 1080p files but  I think it can still be fix by FW update from WD. Actually most of the time pag may pixelation issue or totally no video and sounds lang yun output, I'll just clicked on 'Pause' then hit 'Play' button again to play it properly.

BTW for those who have a HD Camcorder (mine is HD Cam from Sanyo), WD can play the MP4/H.264 files flawlessly :)

You just need an USB Card reader to play your raw movie files :)

If you can't ff it, then I would consider that a major defect and not just a minor glitch.

That's why I prefer AVI containers.  Old, but playback is more reliable, and fixing encoding errors is easier.

I think 1080p resolution is possible in an AVI container, but nobody seems to be interested.

Advice ko, just buy the WD.  Pag hindi ka nasiyahan, ibenta mo lang, or gamitin as a second player.  Mura lang naman, di ba?  ;)

Yung isa kong hidef (1080p na .wmv) file na ginamit for testing walang sound output - Audio Channel 1 Not Supported ang error na lumalabas. Pero meron video. HDMI to display and digital to AVR.

What is the audio file?

To view the specs, try Super http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER , click and drag the file to the bottom window, then double-click the loaded file.

File will become too big in AVI(tried to convert once, reached 28Gig for mpg, what more for high def), hence the MKV plus it includes multi-audio and subtitles.

Passs-through lang sir, walang decode.

Di ba container lang naman ang AVI, so file size depends on the codec?

But I tried a DVD to AVI conversion, 720 horizontal resolution (sagad sa 720 horizontal ng DVD source), Xvid codec, 1.5 Mbps bit rate, streamed Dolby 5.1 audio.  Output file size was only 1.46 GB.

Multi-audio and multi-subtitles (muxed, not external) are possible on AVI.  AVI-Mux GUI can do it: http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/ but I'm not sure if any player supports it.

According to Alexander Noe (AVI-Mux GUI author), concerning the myth that AVI can only handle 1 or 2 audio streams:

"A few people who think to write container comparisons still believe this, or even write such disinformation in order to make up advantages of OGM that do not exist, although even the original AVI file specification supports 256 streams (no matter how many of them are audio or video), and although AVI-Mux GUI has been able to create AVI files with multiple audio streams for years."

According to Avery Lee (VirtualDub author), the 2 digits containing the stream number in the original AVI spec's FourCC chunk ID are hex digits, which allow 256 possible streams in an AVI file.

clondalkin,
Dami kasi avi format eh!
meron din kasi ako mga nadownload na 720p na mga movie trailer in form of divx ito.
Nakagconvert na rin ako nito. DVD to divx (upscale nga lang)720p at 6 channel mp3 yung audio.
Bluray to mp4 720p audio ac3 5.1 using nero. try lang about 5 mins yung video,  convert ko ng 40mins...
pero di pa ako nakakita ng avi na more than 2 yung audio at subtitle.

Hi!

A newbie here.

Can anyone pls. make suggestions/recommendations on the most cost efficient, economical, yet effective way of setting up a HD Media Player to watch downloaded tv shows & movies on a plasma tv?

The downloaded shows & movies are stored on my PC hard disk which is outside our room, while my plasma tv is inside the master bedroom.  From what I have read, if I were to buy an external HDD, then download the shows, then disconnect it and attach it to the WD TV Media Player to watch, wouldn't this be much of a hassle?

I am planning to buying an WD 1TB external HD, but read somewhere that WD external HD are not reliable for storing pictures, home videos, etc.  Is this correct?  Any comments?

My original plan (prior to reading this thread) was to partition it to store storing pictures, another partition is for home videos, then another would be for the torrents.  Is it ok to do this?

Has anyone done a comparison between purchasing a popcorn and a WD media player with 1TB HDD?

Any suggestions are very much appreciated.  Thanks.

I dont know.

My very first experience with 720p encoded movie was MKV.  Then I just found out later that a few titles are available with AVI extension but high def quality.   Before that, I thought AVI files were all lower than standard def at full screen mode.

The high def avi files in my hdd dont have multi-audio stream and no subs too.  But external subs can be easily found.

yung MKV kasi as my research ay container daw siya.

DV avi - digital video from DV tape
Divx avi - video format from Divx
avi - some microsoft format

lahat sila avi yung extension name.

at yung video ay in any form
avi/mp4/rm/wmv/ etc...

thanks for the link...

 :)  :)  :)

MKV:
It is NOT a video or audio compression format (video codec)
It is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams,
allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file.
http://www.matroska.org/

wala pa kasi akong avi na download na 2 or more audio w/ subtitle.

anyway wala naman pagtatalo dun.
thanks for clarification...

I'm trying to find out if they sell extra remotes.  I'll post here if they do.  I want to use a second remote whenever I take the WD out of the house.

I just got word that they sell extra remotes, order-basis only.

Update:

My remote is ready for pick-up.

I'll post again if I have any complaints about the remote.

SUPER is good, but it's hard to use.  I only use it as a last resort.

Try looking for a download link from their site.  It's hard to believe that simply finding a download link can be such a pain.

Try not to use my videohelp.com link at first (Reply #424 above).  After all, erightsoft warns:

Ano pinaka best converter nyo?

It's easy to encode at aXXo PQ or better because we are not subjecting ourselves to the same limitations as regards specs.

AXXo max file size is 1 CD; audio is always 2-channel, container is always AVI.

1.  Video codec:  Use Xvid.

Try mo Xvid, walang pixellation.

2.  Audio: Use direct stream Dolby.

Talo pa ang aXXo kasi walang aXXo with AC3 5.1 audio.

3.  Bit rate: Use a calculator.

Axxo's bit rate is limited by his max. file size of around 800 MB.

I use Ecuador's calculator:

http://www.ecuadors.net/pcdvd/dvdabc.htm

Talo pa ang aXXo for movies with long runtimes, kasi mas tama ang bitrate na gagamitin.

4.  Converter:

-  Pag walang oras:  AutoGK.

-  Pag sinisipag:  SUPER by erightsoft.

5.  Other tools:

- Normalize audio:  VirtualDubMod, MP3Gain, dBpoweramp music converter.

- Synchronize audio:  AVIMux_GUI.

- Add multiple audio and/or multiple subtitles to AVI: AVIMux_GUI. ;)

If you want the best quality for SD rips, I suggest you use x264 codec and put video in mkv container.  x264 offers better compression than divx or xvid for smaller size.  Also, it's best to demux the audio and use it as is without compression, i.e. AC3 or DTS (mp3 is smaller in size but quality is not as good).  x264 SD rips are not popular before since standalone dvd players cant play them.  But with WDTV or NMT, you can play the SD x264 materials without hitch.

Sample LOTR Return of the King EE x264 DVD rip

Video:
Codec: x264
Bitrate: 1900 kbit/s
Resolution: 716x352
Framerate: 23.976fps
Length: 4:23:14 (extended)

Audio:
Codec: DTS
Bitrate: 768 kbit/s
Channels: 5.1

Source vs. Encode

H.264 AVC of the x264 library is currently the best codec, much better than Xvid.  But H.264 does not work well with an AVI container.

For AVI containers, I recommmend Xvid.  For H.264, I recommend MKV containers.
