tube blackening - is it normal?
« on: Nov 23, 2008 at 09:18 PM »
Hi,

Newbie on tubes here. Just recently, I removed the "tube cage" of my dared mp5 and noticed that the big tube had a blackening at the top. Parang nasunog. Is this normal? Or should I return it to the store (still under warranty). BTW, Sound seems OK and the bars on the big tube are moving when volume is set at 11-12 o'clock.

    Thanks!

As far as we understand this amp (since we sell it too) the big tube does not really affect sound.  Its just like a meter showing off the volume levels. Please correct me if i am wrong :)

No worries on that... almost all tubes changes color when used.

I believe that you can even run the amp with that tube out of it's socket...  ;D

no worries, done that already sir...  ;D

the only connection to that tube from the signal path is via pin 1 but only after a coupling cap, a half-wave rectifier and an rc network that dictates the "attack/decay" of the level display...  ;)

I got a bit higher supply voltage to the input tubes though when the larger tube is out of it's socket... the effect was negligible to my ears though.  ;D
