Sony is well known for having one of the best if not the best in terms of quality of workmanship and picture definition. A lot of potential buyers have stayed away from this brand because of it's price. Today, Sony makes a comeback with a very good and very affordable FULL HD T.V - The Sony 40S400 now available at Sights and Sounds for only P57990.

Call for reservation and for demonstration arrangements.

Anyone who bought this TV can also use this thread for feedbacks regarding this great, cost effective model!

Sir,

Is there any freebies with this model?

Other stores offer higher price but claim to give freebies like camera or another 32" LCD TV. In reality, the freebies are bundled purchased, but are not really free.

Instead of bundled buying, we sell TV separate from other electronics. For instance, when you purchased a Sony TV, you can avail of home-theater at a separate price of P5K.

My mom is the type who would not buy any other TV except a Sony, and she did!

Thanks Vic! For another smooth transaction.

We're playing with it now and you guys may want another round of impressions.

All right, we spent a fair amount of time with the S400 to give out our initial impression/s

Let me say I was not really expecting much from what many will say would be a lower end FULL HD Sony LCD. For me: Sony in recent years meant over-priced, good on paper-wanting in performance, overrated units.

Here we go...

Blu-ray/DVD

First to be tested was the DVD performance of the S400 via a Pioneer DV-410V player - Playing a "Star Wars" movie. I read somewhere that Sony was plagued with very bad uneven lighting and clouding effects. We did see some pockets of uneven lighting during the DVD intro but it was kept to a minimum and is something you'd come to expect from an LCD, so this isn't an issue anymore. For those who want to check black levels we tested the unit with the "Bladerunner" Blu-ray movie using a PS3 and it's surpisingly very good (Still not up to par with a PY800) but it's pretty darn close. With the ever dark "Underworld" Blu-ray there were still grey areas but then again, it's what you'd expect from an LCD. Colors are very nice though and the picture definition is better than a Samsung A550. The S400 has the usual "bright" effect but it was not as scorching as the A550, even at "VIVID" mode. Motion flow was also well done with minimal blurring when tested with the movie "Casino Royal". When it comes to movie picture definition it's above the Sammy A550 and just a little bit below the A650, but for it's price you can't complain and the S400 is obviously more than just "good enough".

PS3

Sony to Sony for gaming = Very very nice! I love the "STANDARD" picture setting and again the colors were very good and not as pale as we expected it to be. There is no dedicated "game mode" but input response time was tested with heavy rounds of Soul Calibur 4 game play and the S400 is spot on! Playing "MGS4" on full 1080p gave very fine details (The reason why you go FULL HD for gaming) and the graphics were crisp, clear and clean. There were very minimal motion blurs with FPS games like "Resistance" but with a fine picture definition like this? I won't take it against Sony (The blurs we've seen are extremely minimal and we were just being too anal about it).

Cable T.V

Would someone from Sights and Sounds come over and channel this thing? This is probably the only real and valid complain we have with this model. It's pretty darn hard to channel >:(

Sound

Not really the best but it trumps above an A550!

Initial pro's and con's

Pro's
+ Full HD panel with one of the best colors we've seen on an LCD
+ Great input response time
+ Good viewing angles

Con's
- Minimal blurring (I'd like to stress that this is fault finding and most of you guys won't even notice it)
- Darn pretty darn hard to channel, it's either that or I'm just not too bright :(

Well, for the price of 57k this is a winner! Sony still has a lot of steam in it's engine and this BRAVIA deserves more than just a simple second look. (I'm kinda looking at the higher models now SAAARRRRRSSSSS!)

this makes the 40s400 cheaper than the samsung 40550 by over 15K, moreso with the 650!  Would you say to go for the sony rather than the samsung 40650, pricewise and featurewise?
And also, 57,990 is the mentioned price here. But someone here also said he bought the same model from the same store for 55,500? Price increase na?

Brillant! The review of Carlo is very informative and full of insights. Carlo gives you all you need to know to make a confident decision when buying an HDTV. He explains the advantages and weaknesses of the different technologies -- including LCD, plasma -- in an easy-to-read style. He includes checklists to help you compare different models, and tells you exactly what to look for when you go shopping. He tells you the reasons for buying the TV--be it for gaming or simply watching movies--so that you can avoid making a mistake of choosing the right TV. Congratulations Carlo, you are a guru when it comes to TV infomations.

By the way, thank you for referring your mom to buy TV from us. It's a pleasure to have another business with you.

Our tech is on his way to fine-tune the cable. Hope to find you post impressions of cable reception also.

Sir, 24p true cinema would be equivalent to the 60, 100 or 120 hz of Samsung?

Sir, 24p true cinema would be equivalent to the 60, 100 or 120 hz of Samsung?

The 24p true cinema is different from Samsung's 120HZ Motion Plus, which is equivalent to Sony's Motion Flow.

The 24P True Cinema technology enables automatic recognition of films shot at 24 frames per second format, and selects the appropriate imaging standard for playback in film-like motion.

Motion plus (or Motion Flow of Sony) technology enables the display of fast image movements with total precision and smoothness, even during fast action-packed sports programmes. With Motion plus 120Hz, unique frames are created between existing frames to help reduce motion blur. These compensate for scenes in which the current frame rate is too slow to accurately and smoothly portray fast moving scenes such as sports, rapid panning of the camera or scrolling text on the bottom of the screen.

I got this TV from SnS about a month ago.  To be honest I bought entriely on price.  The cheapest, 40in 1080P I could find.  This was mostly for the PS3.  I had to wait more than month since the stocks had gotten low. The regular appliance stores had those bundles that just increases the cash out.  Not a video techie, I didn't even do side-by-side comparisons with other models. Was ok with the upsampled DVD's but was really happy with the PS3 and blu-ray discs.  Thanks to "guru" Carlo777 for validating the good buy.  thanks to SnS and Jonjon too.  Great deals to be had.  Not only was it affordable I found this to be really good value. We need TVs not all the other stuff. :-)

@barrister

Thanks, never saw myself as one. You're the expert and therefore the much better reviewer than I am ;)

@Vic

Yup, will give a "cable" impression as soon as your boys are done^

Questions I got via PM after the review:

1) Is this better than the A550?

Yes, yeah! Colors are very good and they're not too bright.

2) Is this unit better than an A650?

Price to performance I'd say - Yes! The A650 may have the edge in-terms of "motion flow" and the A650 may present a more defined picture quality but the difference is very incremental.

3) Better than a plasma?

Subjective. If you like "earthly" colors that will remind you of a CRT picture definition but way way more refined - Then plasma is still the better route. However, if "high-tech" "digitized" looking pictures are your thing than by all means get this!

UPDATE:

Against the A550:

W400 is still the better unit with better color definition, used CARS DVD running at 1080p via Pioneer DV-410v

Against the A650:

Now, it's up to you guys. IMHO, Sony delivers better colors even over the A650 but the Sammy model churns out cleaner, crisper, pictures with finer detail.

Cable:

So far it's looking good, I need more time for this^
