My Setup, December 2012 Update (Page 10)
« on: Apr 25, 2010 at 10:25 PM »
As suggested by pchin, I am posting my current bedroom setup:

In anticipation of, and as a preview of things to come, I added:

It turns out that this 90inch 16:9 manual pull-down screen isn't self-locking.
So I had to improvise to keep it in place, when in use:

The two chrome rods have hooks at each end, which hook to the edge of the screen housing on top, and the metal clips at the bottom of the screen.

And finally, the twin brother of pchin's baby (thanks bro!):  ;D

Mounted on a Perfectview TV wall-mount

My current gearlist:
Display
Panasonic TC-P50g10 plasma tv (2009)
Panasonic PT-AE4000EH projector (2010)

Audio
Yamaha RXV-650 AVR (2006 I think)
Mission m35i fronts (2010)
Mission 77c1 center (pre-2005)
Mission m7ds surrounds (pre-2005)
Mission m31i rears (2010), mounted on 48inch stands c/o Jun Reyes
Dynaquest DQ12 sub (pre-2005, long overdue for replacement! hehe)

Source
Oppo DV981HD DVD player (2007)
PS3 Slim 250GB (2009)
Panasonic NV-HD620 VHS player (pre-2005, unused, long overdue for retirement hehe)
Popcorn Hour A200 (2010)
(Actually I've gone through several media players since 2009, including WDTV, HDPro, Xtreamer, WDTV Live, and the A200.)

Miscellany
Logitech Harmony One remote (2009)
Logitech Harmony Adaptor for PS3 (2009)
Sony PS3 bluetooth remote (2009, bought before the Harmony)
Various cables and ICs (ixos, quantum, audiopro, sabre, monster, belden)

In progress is an extra room I can use as a dedicated HT/audio room in our new place:

The room, originally, with 3 windows too many

The framework is prepared, including the riser, and CD/DVD/BD/hard disk shelves at the back

The room's current state, with the fiberglass fill in place.
The HT contractor is waiting for the rest of the place to be finished, or at least the window and door of the room to be installed, before continuing work to the next stages.

Thanks for looking! Cheers!  :)

Hi Arn! Very nice progress with your HT.

Usap nga kami kahapon ni Pchin cuz his own HT is about the same stage as yours. He is also focused on using rockwool (as absorbers), which is good but I told him that most problems in HT rooms are caused by having too many absorbers and not enough diffusers. Diffusers are not easy to fabricate but if you want something very simple, just use slats.

This is a very crude example at the ceiling of my friend's HT:

In your case, you can put vertical slats along the walls. The slats can be a few inches from each other. If you wish, you can also vary the distances between slats.
No room acoustic treatment is like running a Ferrari on ice.

Wow...nice setup Arn...congrat! Finally we got to see your HT pics. ;) Your 90" screen is huge. :o Is it inside your bedroom? The rod used for locking the screen in place is innovative. :D

Your 50" plasma is fighting for attention now. Congrat on your "work in progress" HT. Hope to see the finished HT room soon so we can have an EB. ;D

Thanks for the advice Mark. Most of the time I was too busy focusing on the absorption that I didn't pay too much attention on the diffusion. :) I have informed my carpenter to work it out.

@StreetSmart: Thanks Mark, I'll take it up with Ashley (Audible Illusions) who's doing the room. Will the shelves for DVDs act as a diffuser already? Btw, the entire ceiling will be also be filled with fiberglass fill to minimize sound leakage to the floor above.

@PChin: Thanks Paul, especially for hauling the huge Panny PJ together with yours all the way from HK! hehe

Yes, it's inside my bedroom and the screen took some getting used to for its size. Hopefully our timetable for our rooms won't get delayed too much, so we can have EBs at both, (although I'm certain both our rooms combined will fit inside Mark's Platinum Cinema!  ;D

Shelves for DVD's are good diffusers pero kulitin mo na lang si Ashley para magdagdag sya ng diffusers.

It's also a good idea to put rockwool on the ceiling if you don't want sound leakage to the floor above. I did the same thing in order to isolate the room acoustically.

By the way, are you using a Sabre pj screen? I used to have one and I had exactly the same problem but you have solved it in a very elegant way!

Good luck!

@streetsmart: Hi Mark, yes, I believe that screen is a sabre screen, I got it from Richie of eHome. It was our company aide who got the idea of using chrome rods, he even made a small lip on one hook for each rod which I can use to catch the clip at the bottom of the screen and bring it down when I use it. Brilliant.

Btw, Alvinthx is working with Ashley with regard to the room's acoustic design and the current design has been factored into Alvin's acoustic computations so no more need na daw for additional diffusers.

Thanks, vtec3, blackie, luther, tein, edboy:) The PJ is a keeper, although pchin and i initially had some second thoughts (because of 3D) before finally taking the 1080 plunge, and I have no regrets about it.

Am still looking around for options for a 106" 16:9 diameter fixed screen. Also for a long sofa/daybed with no armrests for the second row (I thought a sofa would be able to accommodate more seating, esp. for kids, than getting another 3 recliners.) Baka you guys might have suggestions.

Thanks and cheers!  ;D

congrats! your room looks very promising :)

just my 2 cents: if i were you i would get 2.35 fixed screen. believe me, black bars can be irritating and its easier to mask the sides of the screen than the top and bottom. i hear carada makes good screens and their fixed screens are affordable. madali lang naman magpaship from the states e. stay away from da-lite manual screens. except for the high power material, their screens get waves.

thanks for the tip et414! I'll look into 2.35 although I do have a good number of movies that are 16:9 especially kiddie movies, and I'm not too picky about bars, well at least right now in my makeshift setup.

I'll check carada out, and if pwedeng i-johnny air. Mahal kasi fixed screens dito.

Cheers!  ;D
