Htpc refresh rate setting/CIH setup
« on: Nov 19, 2014 at 03:09 PM »
For a too long a time , I was having some occasional jerky motion in watching movies , when using the htpc ..particularly when using the projector .

Solution setup auto refresh rate change to equal the source like 23.975 hz for bluray and most movies . For me it was a setup string in madvr.  There is also an option for it  using Mpc-hc.

Should be the same for flat panel display , just make sure your setting is supported by your video card and display . Otherwise it gets worse

HTPC Set up for CIH ( Constant Image Height)
Here is where an HTPC offers a solution versus an NMT or media player .. Unless of course you have an anomorphic lens setup ..

Just upgraded to a 120 inch 16:9 screen , but since a lot of movies are in 2.35:1 Aspect ratio , I masked my screen to display my screen for 2.35:1 movies ..

Anyway after using google for solutions , I decide to setup my HTPC to display a custom resolution so that all my video would display with CIH , with the screen set to a 2.35:1 ratio..

Basically it involves setting the desktop screen to a 1920 x 816 which is 2.35:1 versus the normal 1080p (1920 x1080 or 16:9) display using either your AMD catalyst or Nvidia setting

Desktop in cinema wide

A 16:9 video cropped on the sides maintaining constant height , the grey border is not obvious in the picture due to the camera's limited dynamic range

A 2.35:1 movie will display using the full screen

I used felt black cloth and velcro strips to hold the cloth for masking ..  Pictures to follow , my phone went lo batt.

For those asking ... The screen size of  120" 16:9 after masking

                                                      displays 115" @ 2.35.1

While a 16:9 video is now cropped into a 90" with CIH setup

A big benefit is I have the picture height optimised to so that I would look straight rather than look up
