some people would argue (a hobby for some folks ;D) that the transport (player using digital connections) plays as big a role as the DAC in music playback...

i suggest you try it for yourself, play a cd using a dvd player via digital out, try another dvd player using the same connections - and a cd player as well - try and see if you hear the difference

for cd player vs dvd player in audio playback - i think there is another thread on the topic already :)

Thanks audioslave. ;)

Further clarification... lets say you're using a good audio quality receiver w/ good DAC! it would not make much difference even using generic player(using digital-out). ???

Technically speaking (tech is my hobby, but I wouldn't argue like iceman said  ;D), you could be correct in a certain point of view. But generic players with digiout should work in the case of your example.  ;D

The cost of CD player doesn't focus on the Digital to Analog Coverter (DAC).  The Transport plays also a major role. CD Transport can measure how well it is if it reads your Software no matter how the recording was made. Quality also depends on the sampling rate etch..... A good transport can read and perform well on your most  scratch Cd's which is already rejected by your DVD or regular CD players. just my 5 cents
It should also plays CD-R , CD-RW and P........mediums.

it boils down to this next pressing question: which part of the CD Player is the most important in the hierarchy? is it the transport, the DAC chip, the power supply unit, etc? which of these components can give or impart the so called "edge" or "x-factor" in a CD Player?  ::)

IMHO, the opamp should be considered first because it is the so-called "interpreter" of the player. a good cd transport is only limited (am not sure ;D) on how fast he can read cd formats while the DAC is simply the converter.

In a series of upgrades, opamp is the first one to be modified.

IMHO its the power supply first  :) if the power supply is ok then you might opt to change the opamp next. But, make sure the opamp you switch is compatible or has the same voltage requirements with the one you are replacing it with.

I think what separates the good from merely average cd players is in controlling jitter. IMHO everything else is secondary to that.

Re: Jitter, what should be the ideal range? My next question will be...in a cd player what change aside from dampening(damping?) the chassis et al will result in significant reduction of jitter?

Ayan na, jitter na ang pinaguusapan.... we are way beyond DACs and opamps now.

Garp, isama mo na din yun pickup gain and offset control correction.  ;D

OK lets put it this way, the basic part of the CD player is the CD Transport & the DAC. That's why in a true high-end system hiwalay ang dalawang ito.
Mid-end set-up usually we are using CD player where both CD transport & DAC are already in the package. You cannot upgrade your transport  because it is custom fit to any brand of players so you don't have any choice but to change/opgrade  both OP-amp & power supply.
You are right me also believe that OP-amp is the 1st part to upgrade below are my list:
1. OP-amp
2. Power supply (Both the diodes & Capacitors)
3. All Capacitors must change with premium one
4. Resistors, change them with precission one
5. RCA connectors
Sir JojoD, John & Garp can you post your list of upgrades start from your priority.

Most of the high-end electronic gears have premium parts, ang kagandahan especially if you are DIY'er step-by-step nakikita mo improvements, unlike surplus you always start with the scratch (Pag ayaw mo tunog dispose mo wala ka na reference)....hehehe! Fish tayo mga sir!
Seriously mga sir ganun talaga you need to replace cheap parts lang naman. I am not anti-surplus the truth i have one. pinakamaganda sa lahat kung saan ka maligaya!

Bro surplus cdp are the best for your DIY tweaks aside from cheap eh maraming available.. tsaka your right not all surplus cdp are with good parts pero meron din naka boutique parts and caps na.. like Sony 701es and my Pioneer... but syempre medyo out dated na yun for sure meron ng newer version ng parts like Opamp..kaya dyan papasok DIY na..
