We made a separate review & comparison between Rotel RCD-1072 & the USHER CD-100 together with my friend who owned a Rotel with the above Model ( He is also a very critical listener like Audioslave & can distinguished the slight difference between a good copy of audiophile CD & the original one). It is one-on-one comparison, just to keep away from bias position, I let him make his own review. I will post his review as soon as I received it.

"This is my own review for the two CD player USHER CD-100 (odyopayl) & my ROTEL RCD-1072" This is one-on-one comparison of the two player:
I dug out "Barbados" performed by Arne Domnerus and colleagues from Jazz at the Pawnshop. The sounds of the Cymbal on this cut were mellower and smoother with not as much flange as the Rotel. The edge on strings was softened. The Rotel offered a different sound on strings. The sound was bigger and more open, but with more edge from this recording.

Using another XRCD, I listened to  Esther Ofarims singing "Kinderspiele" The  USHER sounded softer than Rotel. The voice was smaller, but pretty well integrated with the the sound field. The USHER offered bigger soundstage but not as big as Rotel and more depth. Voice was bigger, more delicate, and quicker sounding. There was more reverberation present and more sense of space when listening thru the Rotel, but the USHER offered a slightly more natural vocal presentation.

I got an idea to see how the players fared with a not-so-good recording. I dropped in"You are the sunshine of my life" from the "Only Fonta" Axis Jazz Empire The USHER  delivered a slightly toned down quality on this cut, but voice was very appealing. Again the Rotel had more space and more sound overall. With bad recordings this may be too much of a normally good thing. There was a definite tradeoff between losing a little resolution (especially spatially) compared  the feeling that the music had an etched quality to it.

Talking about the pocket, for the price USHER is less than 20K it's a BEST Buy, not to mention some more space for improvement and commercially available upgrades.

Master Odyopayl,

Sana na AB natin sa 971 and 02. 02 being at par with the Usher in terms of price... having its performance against the 1072... i would say bang for the buck yan being < 20k ang price. Congrats on your Usher CDP!  ;D

Pwede rin sir, we already AB it with the NAD 542 of Audioslave. BTW, I've heard that Archt'l. Audio will carry USHER CD Player for less than 20K?

Most of the high-end electronic gears have premium parts, ang kagandahan especially if you are DIY'er step-by-step nakikita mo improvements, unlike surplus you always start with the scratch (Pag ayaw mo tunog dispose mo wala ka na reference)....hehehe! Fish tayo mga sir!
Seriously mga sir ganun talaga you need to replace cheap parts lang naman. I am not anti-surplus the truth i have one. pinakamaganda sa lahat kung saan ka maligaya!

Just curious, kung hi-end na cdp mo, bakit kailangan mo pa i-upgrade yun parts? Diba naisip nun designer na hi-end yun design so dapat premium yun parts? Besides, as a diyer, I am not impressed with some of the hi-end cdps that we have opened either. Others have premium parts, while others don't.

Anyway, baka humaba pa.  ;D Like you, I don't see anything wrong with brand new or surplus, yun nga lang yun surplus mas mura.

Cheers!

Jojo's tip:

The best approach in upgrading "any audio electronics" is to study the circuit, learn how it works, why it sounds like that, which part or parts dictates sonics. Gentlemen (any ladies?), the best weapon in this hobby is knowledge.

Common practice of diyers here is to change opamps, caps, bypass caps etc, and then you end up changing everything. Some websites even change the main supply caps because "1000uf lang?!? eh" let's change it to 4,700uf. Then what? Do you gain anything? Have you even considered the PSRR? Refining ripple won't give you any improvement if the PSRR is way beyond specs. That just won't cut it.

As an example, take an opamp specifically designed for audio then use it and exploit it, push it to it's limits, squeeze the darn thing until it sounds good, find the best possible configuration for it to sound it's best.  Remember, an opamp works because of resistance in it's feedback, without it, an opamp behaves like a piece of wire with a gain of 1! Too much of it and you approach it's open loop gain and you lose bandwidth.

Study how the circuit works and exploit it!

this is OT, but i hope you put up your own audio company. babakas ako sa equity. palagay ko maraming gusto ring sumali dito. tapos ipa-lista natin sa stock exchange, IPO agad para times 10 ang pera natin in one year. keep on sharing your knowledge on how to improve the sound of our CDPs, bihira ang taong tulad mo master!
