Any recommendation for a budget entry level TT? Are new production better sounding than vintage players like the Technics sl1200? Just asking po before plunging back into this medium :)

Found the following budget new production turntables in the net.  A relative is coming back from the States this month and I was thinking if this can be an alternative for me.  I don't consider myself an audiophile,  I just love music in any format and would love to hear vinyl again.  Your thoughts will be appreciated.  Thanks! :)

Audio Technica AT-PL50:  Belt-drive, fully-automatic, switchable pre-am  w/ outputs - $89.99

Denon DP-29F: Belt-drive, manual, built-in phono equalizer - $149.99

the first 2 look very much the same as my old Aiwa, and some pioneers sold in this forum. for the same price i suggest you get an old technics. the sound quality of the first 2 (if they are like my aiwa) leave much to be desired...

am not sure about the new technics though :)

Thorens TD-350

A subchassis turntable of the new generation!

The revival of our unique subchassis-concept is starting with our new TD 350. The TD 350 represents the perfect symbiosis of a mass-drive and a subchassis turntable and unites the benefits of both technologies. Experience the rebirth of a unique technology with the most modern materials and the latest knowledge inside the TD 350!

We call it “IDD” (Independent Double Damping) and speak of the way the subchassis is suspended inside the massive wooden plinth. This kind of suspension damps the vibrations and excursions in the horizontal and the vertical completely independent of each other. In combination with our 9 lb heavy platter and the new low-friction bearing this drive has got such an incredible stable and calm rotation resulting in high resolution and big dynamics. The built-in electronic unit controls and stabilizes the speed exactly. Many more details of components of the TD 350 – such as the precisely manufactured belt, the diamondgroun platter with the bitumen coating on the groundside, the noiseless AC-synchronous motor, the excellent tone arm TP 250 – they all give their share to the outstanding sound of the TD 350.

As a long-play record maniac you can now forget all these technical details and concentrate on what is really important for you – the perfect music reproduction. Take your favorite records and you will again be fascinated and remember why you have always been a Thorens customer and why you will stay.

Available in October 2005.

Thorens TD 2030

rb-300?

Outstanding look and perfect sound

The new Thorens Acrylic Series looks as though it comes straight out of the future: transparent, gleaming, and flawless. A work of art.
The Acrylic Series continues our 100-year tradition of turntable construction. It combines our great experience with the latest manufacturing techniques to offer you outstanding performance and a unique design.

The TD 2030 never fails to surprise: the elaborate sandwich construction produces unrivalled sound quality. But that's not all: seen from above or from the side, the 1 1/4" thick acrylic chassis has a warm blue gleam, yet from the front it is clear and transparent.
A new 1 1/2" thick alloy turntable platter weighing over 14 lbs rotates in its proven silent-run bearing.
The already favorable properties of the acrylic are considerably enhanced by the sandwich construction of the chassis. It gives the 34 lb TD 2030 unparalleled stability and a sound completely free of resonance.

here's another great alternative...

the michell gyrodeck SE (spider edition)

you can try this out at Watt Hi Fi, Makati Cinema Square.

they are the official distributor of michell turntables here in Manila.

I believe one can easily arrange for an audition of this brand.

i own a different turntable but this was a very close second in my list.

superb performance! outstanding!

pictures and some specs of other models can be found on the following website
