Japanese Films:
Versus (Only R2 and PAL)
Audition (R1 version recommended)
Rashomon
Ran
Wasabi
Dark Water

I bought Audition (couldn't find R1), Dark Water, Wasabi, but couldn't find Versus... have search on a number of shops already...Ran and Rashomon DVDs I found have no english subtitles...

Quote
Korean Films:
Musa (Out of stock, if u get a DVD be sure it has the limited edition print booklet inserted)
Volcano High (I suggest the MEGASTAR version)
JSA: Joint Security Area
Shiri (Get the DTS region 3 and not the all region DD5.1*old version)
My Wife is a Gangster

I bought all of these, and some other Korean films as well :) Musa, not sure what version, looks like Korean version though, not sure if limited edition... I think my Shiri was the Korean version...

I just watched Audition, R3 version, and couldn't get myself to like it... everyone seems to like it very much from reviews I've read, not sure if it's the version I've seen, or if it really wasn't my taste.

My father, brother, and sister all found it very dragging...

Same here, I feel asleep watching it, but the ending was really awesome  ;D . I can still hear the bones getting cut until now. I think Audition is overhype.

Recommended Asian films:
Battle Royale
Sassy Girl
Shiri

haven't heard much about Black Mask 2... maybe just rent it first... Black Mask isn't exactly a great film, so I wouldn't really bet on part 2 to be a good one, especially not much hype came out of it...

I watched Volcano High the other day... found it just average, nice to see that Korean films are gaining ground... and that they can do respectable special effect sequences... :)

Don't get THREE and WASABI.  WHere are you getting these anyway?  I've been wanting to get VERSUS.

Just saw The Phone (available from your friendly abu) - I've been a fan of Asian films from some time now, but buying an original HK copy - sometimes hurts my pocket since I'm only after the film - sometimes the special features are rendered useless since there are no subtitles. Although these pirates should not be tolerated - I give them a pat on the back for releasing Asian films - something that you can't buy at Astrovision or any local DVD store. That way, my horizons are opened up a bit.

Before you order something from your favorite asian online store, take note that these titles are already "out there"

Recommended:
Volcano High
My Sassy Girl
Wasabi

Semi-Recommended:
A Man Called Hero - some crappy effects
The Phone
Guns & Talks
Bangkok Dangerous (plays only on my PC DVD player)
Jan Dara

Phone was ok.
Really confusing due to the flashbacks.
Not so scary.
Ok - ending.

Wish these Korean films would show some skin. I just noticed that Koreans are not into torrid kissing or breast exposure.  ::)

DVD Buy:
Audition (But if you didn't take to Ichii you might find this not to your taste but this is an R1 DVD must)
Rashomon (The Criterion Collection is a must)
Ran (Wait for a Spec.Edition, which has been rumored)
Dark Water (bare-bones DVD plus it's made in HK so some of the subtitling is off but this is a satisfyingly spooky movie)

Korean Films:
Barking Dogs Never Bite (best Korean film I've seen. Wish there was a better DVD of it, though. Maybe you can pick up the Korean Edition. More expensive but possibly better)
Volcano High (If only so it's easy to go back to specific chapters. There's a lot of action scenes here you'd like to see again and VCDs are  a bitch to navigate)
Three (The third and best episode is available in a seperate DVD. if you don't mind having a DVD that's 2/3 so-so crap, get the full-length one. If not, get this. Has extras)

VCD:
JSA: Joint Security Area (A far, far better film than Volcano but not open to repeat viewings. have a DVD of this but I've played it only once. My DVD of Volcano has been fed into the machine quite a lot of times, though)
Wasabi (or better yet, just borrow it from someone or . . .you know. . .)
Shiri (Have a VCD of this. Am OK with that. Don't feel the need to get DVD but the Spec-Ed. is gorgeous)

Haven't seen it but will get Sorum on DVD.

was home for new year and was surprised to see some asian titles have found their way over. everybody was also raving about ringu which was shown on local theaters, as well as our much loved shaolin soccer. could it be that manila's finally opening up?

Although these pirates should not be tolerated - I give them a pat on the back for releasing Asian films - something that you can't buy at Astrovision or any local DVD store. That way, my horizons are opened up a bit.

amen. i had to edumacate friends and family by sending discs like my sassy girl, il mare, my wife is a gangster and the like (can you tell i've been in a korean mood), but now i can just tell them to get it from the friendly neighborhood pirate.

slightly off-topic:
bently, going back to freezing illinois next month, i can get you discs here (hk) if you want. msg mo na lang ako.

oh I see, I think they recommended the Korean 2 disc release as the best one so far... I have it and it has great 5.1 mix, and some extra features on disc 2...

looking at the link you gave me, it seems that they will copy the features of the Korean 2 disc set... and change it into a region 0 disc

I just saw Swordsman II and I was rather disappointed.  The presentation of the story was rather confusing and the fight scenes are ho-hum.  Though it was nice to see Rosamund Kwan.
