My fave movies in order:

1.  Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos
2.  Insiang
3.  Dung-aw
4.  Maynila...
5.  "Bukas Madilim Bukas" in Tatlo Dalawa Isa
6.  Kung Mangarap Ka't Magising
7.  Itim
8.  Kisapmata
9.  Oro, Plata, Mata
10.  City After Dark
11.  Scorpio Nights
12.  Nunal sa Tubig

Guilty pleasures:

1.  Huwag Tularan:  Pito ang Asawa Ko
2.  Ishma's Tisoy
3.  Banaue
4.  Magkaribal
5.  The Pugo-Bentot-Eddie San Jose series -- Nukso nang Nukso
6.  Batu-Bato sa Langit
7.  "Impakta" segment of "Lipad Darna Lipad"
8.  Laruang Apoy
9.  High School Circa '65
10.  Gumising Ka, Maruja
11.  Kamakalawa
12.  Hello, Goodnight, Goodbye -- the Tina Revilla-Christopher de Leon segment

What's the title of the LVN (?) movie where the main characters go to bed, their souls sleepwalk to the kitchen to eat, going back the husband's soul inadvertently enter the wife's and the wife's the husband's, and they reverse roles?  That was a fun movie -- with Edna Luna I think.

LOL!!!  I finally have a copy, woohoo!!!  I was able to Tivo it last April 28.  I'm reluctant to watch it again to be honest.  Vagaries of time and memory, you know.  Might ruin it for me.  Parang dating syota.  LOL.  One of these days I'll put myself in the right mindset and see it again.  BTW I still owe you a redub of Chimes of Midnight.

LIPAD DARNA LIPAD no longer exists. The showdown between Gloria Romero & Vilma is a rare treat in this film. No fantasy film ever made it to critics lists.

Welcome aboard, eman59. Its presumed LOST meaning no existing masterprint, beta or vhs copy exists anymore. Same predicament with those Sine Pilipino Prods which came out with Bernal's ZOOM ZOOM SUPERMAN, SI POPEYE ATBP.

Sad state of film preservation here in our country.

Oh, is that you?

I don't know; I've watched it again and again (Tatlong Taong I mean) and it still knocks me on my behind.

Texted Teddy Co a while ago and he came up with the following films, not necessarily in order.

1. EL FILIBUSTERISMO (Gerry de Leon)
2. SAWA SA LUMANG SIMBORYO (Gerry de Leon)
3. DAIGDIG NG MGA API- (Gerry de Leon) almost all cineastes over 50 years old raved about this Gerry de Leon classic according to him.
4. MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG (Lino Brocka)
5. INSIANG (Lino Brocka)
6. MANILA BY NIGHT (Ishmael Bernal)
7. SCORPIO NIGHTS (Peque Gallaga)
8. KISAPMATA (Mike de Leon)
9. BIYAYA NG LUPA (Manuel Silos)
10. PERFUMED NIGHTMARE (Kidlat Tahimik)
11. TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS (Mario O'Hara)

His lists may vary from time to time. Sometimes he may add an Avellana, or Celso Ad Castillo.

One thing wrong with that list: I know for a fact he hasn't seen Daigdig ng Mga Api.

That said, I'd love to see it; might cause radical changes in my list too.

Manila By Night & City After Dark -- are these different films? Or is it just one film with two different titles?
I saw a DVD of this and was curious. How good is this film? Thanks!

It was Manila By Night, then changed to City After Dark when the MTRCB objected.

It's only Ishmael Bernal's masterpiece.

Thanks!

Might as well ask about the others in the catalogue - which ones are good?

Cain & Abel
Karnal
Laro sa Baga
Babae sa Bintana
Pahiram ng Isang Umaga
Relasyon
Hamakin Lahat
Makiusap sa Diyos
The Fatima Buen Story

You're right, Noel. He hasn't seen it and will take that out in favor of O'Hara's TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS. But still, Teddy included it. He might have influence also with so many raves on that Gerry de Leon classic by cineastes although he hasn't seen it.

Apparently no ORO PLATA MATA on his lists as he was just touring the mansion of the Lorenzo clan in ORO with Peque yesterday in Bacolod.  ;)

So far among the bunch, I've seen CAIN AT ABEL, KARNAL, RELASYON, PAHIRAM NG ISANG UMAGA & HAHAMAKIN LAHAT. The first three are classic, while the others were not really bad.

I remember Teddy saying he prefers Tatlong Taong over Insiang. Which I think is really saying something.

I recommend Fatima Buen. Don't expect too much from Kris Aquino, but the supporting cast is terrific, everyone from Gina Pareno to even Zoren Legaspi gives excellent performances. And O'Hara's approach is a horror-gothic take on a tabloid story.

To take out DAIGDIG over TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS is a rare feat already. Our lists can change from time to time, again if I have to tally all the votes..........Brocka's MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG is still on top.

Maynila sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag is Teddy's all-time favorite.

It's a great book too. Better than the movie, I think.

How come Abaya's TANIKALA written by Edgardo M. Reyes, sank into oblivion?

It was actually a good material, can't hold to those feminist angst that she did in the 80's (Brutal, Moral & Karnal). I can't believe that was the adaptation that we went crazy during my elementary days. It has suspense moments in the adapted material/komiks by Edgardo Reyes. Even SENSUAL has such a good premise but wasted.

Last night I bumped into several prominent people in Philippine Cinema during the preem of Cesar Hernando's KAGAT NG DILIM short feature. I made an ambush interview successfully.  ;)

Film critic Mario Hernando's lists not necessarily in order because he can't think as his brother was being congratulated for a job well-done.

ANAK DALITA
MANILA BY NIGHT
KUNDIMAN NG LAHI
BIYAYA NG LUPA
GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON
NUNAL SA TUBIG
KISAPMATA
ITIM
BATANG WEST SIDE- he kept on reminding me to see this film!
EBOLUSYON NG ISANG PAMILYANG PILIPINO
BONA
INSIANG- he called my attention after I talked to him because he almost forgot this Brocka classic.

I kept also on making rebuttal on ORO PLATA MATA but we had an argument about that.......in first and 2nd viewing it was wow and totally impressed him, after that.......its ok already.  ;D ;)
Now the big question...... where is MAYNILA SA KUKO NG LIWANAG? He said it looks dated already and when you make a lists on the the best films you shouldn't be tired of watching them over and over again. And how about those films made by the camp of Joey Gosiengfiao & Elwood Perez? You can't really put them on the Best Lists because how could you put John Water's films on the GREATEST FILMS EVER MADE?  ;D

RODY LACAP was very honest to admit that he can't include those films that he made as a cinematographer......but he looks back to ORO PLATA MATA as his greatest work. The top four on his book.

In order of preference:

1. TINIMBANG KA NGUNIT KULANG
2. SCORPIO NIGHTS
3. TATLONG TAONG WALANG DIYOS
4. MANILA BY NIGHT

Mes de Guzman is an independent filmmaker, his lists not necessarily in order:

KISAPMATA
ITIM
HIMALA
OROPRONOBIS
ORO PLATA MATA
SCORPIO NIGHTS
BONA
BATANG WEST SIDE
KAMBAL TUKO
BIYAYA NG LUPA

For the final ambush interview, here's Quark Henares top ten best pinoy films in order of preference. Quark was a joy to talk with, very friendly, cordial and has so much passion in Philipine Cinema! Hey Quark, when will you make a comeback? I missed your type of movies like KEKA & GAMITAN , hehehe. He was looking for commentary after the screening.

1. BATCH '81
2. KISAPMATA
3. SALAWAHAN
4. KAPIT SA PATALIM
5. ORO PLATA MATA
6. PAGDATING SA DULO
7. NINJA KIDS
8. MANILA BY NIGHT
9. BATANG WEST SIDE
10. SA AKING PAGKAKAGISING MULA SA KAMULATAN

We had a fun talk regarding NINJA KIDS........he kept on emphasizing to put it on number 7.  ;) Thanks always to RMN for the back-up interview from these people.

Maynila looks dated compared to Manila by Night? Maybe he doesn't mean "looks." Maynila's city still looks as dark and menacing as ever, Manila By Night actually looks cleaner and nicer than Manila today.

I like Rody's list best. ;D

Noel, how would you rate NINJA KIDS? I'm sure Quark was not drunk when he mentioned that film. Ice teas and softdrinks were the only available drinks last night at Greenbelt Cinema 3. He was actually in love with the movie and put it on top of MANILA BY NIGHT & BATANG WEST SIDE?  ;)

MyCinema in Greenbelt 3 has only sitting capacity of 50 persons. Nice, cozy place at the lobby where you can actually have your favorite huntahan with the filmmakers.

Cesar Hernando's Best Filipino Films, not necessarily in order. No contemporary because he might include some of the projects that he did with Mike de Leon like Batch '81, KISAPMATA.

GILIW KO
BIYAYA NG LUPA
48 ORAS
IKAW KASI
EL FILIBUSTERISMO
KUNDIMAN NG LAHI
SANDA WONG
ANAK DALITA

I don't know about Giliw Ko--but to each his own. The rest are excellent choices. I'd throw in Sawa sa Lumang Siymboryo and Genghis Khan.

I'm not also familiar with Kuya Cesar's lists, since most of the films I've never seen except for BIYAYA NG LUPA, 48 ORAS & ANAK DALITA.

There are more great movies to explore during the First Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. But the availability is always the main problem.

Kundiman, Giliw, and Sanda are available. Just watch out for NCCA or Pelikula at Lipunan screenings.
