I saw this model at Listenning in Style st Robinsons East. They are selling it for P8,700. Looks like the china made models with the transport in the middle, pero Pioneer siya talaga. Very slim...

...cheap. ;)

bought the dv355 today from listening room. since the only real comparison at its price range right now is against the china made players, a good comparison can be made:

pro's
ergonomic remote
slim design
good optical cable connector design
very good gui
up to 192 audio bit converter (for receivers that can accept such signals)
reads mp3
no problem with such discs as Artificial intelligence r3, dinosaur dvd 9, shaolin soccer r3, etc.
cheaper, slimmer and has more features than the DV 233
so far, no weird problems like weird remote design (shinco and xenon), bad dts playback (shinco 858ps), inability to read some r3 titles like AI (konzert, sast)

con's
no pal-ntsc converter (a plus for pirated concert dvds which are mostly pal)
not prog scan (if you have TV's or an lcd projector that can accept them, that is)
higher in price than its china made counterparts

conclusion: you get what you paid for, the china made players have more features but quality is inconsistent as some of our fellow pinoydvd members have found out with their SAST and Xenon players. Their remotes are not ergonomic which are important for long term use. And the basics are covered, you don't have to worry about compatibility with original titles and good playback.

I asked about this player in Automatic Center and they said that this model is the replacement for the DV233. This is Pioneer's new entry model.

i just saw this player awhile ago, i was planing to buy the 533k but now i'm more decided on this model, the guy told me that it's almost the same w/ 533k the only diff is the karaoke function and thats it. SO for me i don't need karaoke

decided to finally buy a DVD player last Friday.  My final options were the Philips 765 and the Pioneer 533K.  Why the Philips 765 kasi baka manalo ako lotto e di puede na ko bumili ng progressive display --tapos hindi na ko bibili ng panibagong player dahil progscan na 765 hehe, tapos yung 533K naman because of its excellent track record with regards to playability of a wide spectrum of titles including pdvd.  Kaso when I tried a p-copy of Toy Story dun sa Philips 765 di niya mabasa, we tested it on the Philips 736 oks naman naka-digital video out nga sa progscan tv ng Philips anlupit ng picture, to think p-copy pa yon.  So the 765 was out.  Vying for contention was the 736 and the Pioneer 533K.  Kaso when I evaluated (again) the 533K's specs I couldn't help but notice the Pioneer 355, same features daw as the 533K except karaoke plus 3K cheaper, I thought this was a huge factor so I finally got my DVD player, a 355.  Panay ang panood ko over the weekend and so far no hassles.  Napansin ko lang yung Philips 736 me picture adjustments siya like sharpness, color, tint, etc dun sa 355 wala, but anyway puede naman sa tv ang ganon adjustments so no problem...

Hi KB14, Welcome to PinoyDVD,

PAL to NTSC converter means the DVD player will convert PAL signal to produce an NTSC signal. You will need this if your tv is an NTSC only, but if it is a multisystem then you have no use for this.

Check this out Progressive Scan DVD Players

I've seen the 355 in Abenson. Is multi-region? If it is, then it looks like a good deal.

I think most of the Pioneer models being sold here are multi-region. Yun kasing isang kaibigan ko, bumili ng pioneer, may tatak ng region 3 sa likod, pero he tried to play my R1 Air Force 1, tumakbo naman. :)

it can but you have to have a multisystem tv to see it. it does not convert pal to ntsc like the china made players do.

I have a Pioneer dv355 after choosing between a Samsung S128(p7500) and the pioneer dv355(p8600). Bought the Pioneer based on its ability to play PAL discs in case I happen to stumble on one. Samsung is, I believe, NTSC only. Performance wise, its does ok. video looks sharp. Played all the discs I have (orig and p-discs)except 1 in which it couldn't read the menu but can play the movie when you press the enter button. BUT, All these the Samsung S128 does also and has some featrues the dv355 doesn't have which for me is quite useful. These are the proprietary chapter display, the screen saver, and the screen fit. Screen fit is really nice especially for repeated viewings of movies or animations in 1:2.35 ratio by kids who don't mind a little distortion(thin man effect coz have to set 16:9 for it to work) as long as they get to watch their fave movie. This would save the 4:3 tv from screen burn in. Even better if you have a widescreen tv. Eliminates those black bars on 2.35 movies. Not all discs can be adjusted to screen fit though. All in all, if I had to do it over again, I'd buy the Samsung S128. Costs less and has more features to boot. The Pioneer looks better though. Don't know if there's a screen saver feature on the 355. Couldn't see any indication on the manual. Hindsight is always 20/20.
Just my 2 shillings. :-)

Though I was able to use both, can't really say which would be more durable since both units have seen only about a month's worth of use and not very extensive at that. In my estimation, they're probably just about the same in terms of durability. I did, at one time, experience pixelation (square solid colors forming a jagged vertical line for a split second) on the samsung. Don't know if it was due to the disk. Haven't seen it on the pioneer. But on the 355 I noticed jitter on a particular scene lasting about a second. It was a p-disk so maybe it was the disk's fault. I guess they both have their quirks. nothing's perfect. Just check out which features you find more useful. Someone mentioned the Panasonic dvd- rv32. Checked out the features on the net and it seems to have better features than the 328 and 355. Its got subwoofer out, 4:3 zoom, 41 character file name on MP3's and plays WMA and I think pal/ntsc. Don't know if its available already or how much it costs. Its also an entry level model.
