Questions mga bros, I'm currently using an onkyo 818. What setting should I use in the speaker set up when I use Left, Right, Center SVS M01 speakers na 4ohms, and an SVS SSS-02 speakers na 8ohms?

Is it also safe for the AVR to use speakers with different impedance?

Thanks.

Hi Jao,
The 818 might have a hard time with that combination. AFAIK the onkyos can handle different impedances if they're 6 and 8 ohms. however sa literature niya its indicated to avoid using different impedences. If you'd still want to try the setting should be at 4ohms.

Thank you sir :) I guess  the best way to go is to use an external power amp :)

Np Bro :) I would reco an external amp para safe. Sayang yung 818 if it gets busted.

page 59 on the manual:

Speaker Impedance
4 ohms: Select if the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more but less than 6.
6 ohms: Select if the impedances of all speakers are between 6 and 16 ohms.

when Speaker Impedance is set to 4 ohms, a current limiter is activated within the circuitry so that output power remains within safe operating specs.

impedance ratings as published by speaker manufacturers are average values within the operating bandwidth of the speaker, it's not constant across all frequencies. a speaker rated at 8 ohms may have impedance as low as maybe 6 ohms and can be as high as 50+ ohms.

the 818 is certified for 4 ohms performance, and being THX certified it must also be able to handle as speaker loads as low as 3.2 ohms for short durations.

The 818 might have a hard time with that combination. AFAIK the onkyos can handle different impedances if they're 6 and 8 ohms. however sa literature niya its indicated to avoid using different impedences. If you'd still want to try the setting should be at 4ohms.

i seem to have missed this part...

I sent an inquiry to OnkyoUSA, here is their response:

(1) When selecting 4 ohm speaker impedance on the receiver; ALL connected speakers must be between 4 ohms. Connecting 4 and 8 ohm speakers onto this unit will cause a imbalanced load and damage the receiver. For instance, you can damage the receiver if using 4 and 8 ohm speakers together on this receiver. (2) You can use 6 and 8 ohms speakers onto this receiver; as the variation is slightly different but is safe for operation of the receiver. (3) Lastly; using an external amp to drive your 4 ohm speakers independently from your 8 ohm speakers connected to the receiver would be derivative based on the external amp and not the TX-NR 818 receiver.

^ not sure if that is entirely accurate. here is what's stated on the manual (page 15):

Read the following before connecting your speakers:
• You can connect speakers with an impedance of between 4 and 16 ohms. If the impedance of any of the connected speakers is 4 ohms or more, but less than 6 ohms, be sure to set the minimum speaker impedance to “4ohms” (➔ page 59). If you use speakers with a lower impedance, and use the amplifier at high volume levels for a long period of time, the built-in protection circuit may be activated.

by the way, did you know that Onkyo's tech support is now handled by a local company?

Thank you sir. I will send a pm to astrokidd of Tipidpc :)

Though, Onkyo USA support na galing yung sagot eh, I just don't know what the local tech support will tell me.

To be safe, I'm not using the 4ohms speakers temporarily, till i get my hands on an external power amp.

i believe Onkyo USA support is outsourced to a Philippine BPO company. You'll probably get the same answer if that's what was trained to them.

Guys, Question: Will replacing the Cord of your Onkyo receiver to a Branded Power Cord make a big difference?
