natabunan na pala ito...

anyway, due to schedule constrains, i just tested the ONKYO AVR last weekend and the front main speakers is still OK. but the other two slot for the front speakers (i dont know what do you call it guys) seem to be not functioning anymore. right now im only planning to acquire a pair of front speakers for this. so this is not an issue to me.\

@airborne03
how do i test the other outputs i.e. center and rear, if the connection from my source is only using two RCA cables? == connectted to the "front speaker inlet" of my DVD player.

You need speakers with the wires then. I've never tried one with rca jacks, pang mutli-media yata yung speakers mo? Unless you strip the wires and remove the jacks? Don't know if this can be done.  ??? Hope someone can weigh in about this.

SIRAIN....2 stars nga lang ito sa What HiFi UK.  Better audition for DENON or Marantz Range Series likewise Rotel.  Sa mga nakausap kong nag may-ari ng Onkyo, unang bumibigay ang voltage regulator / Power Transistor in less than a four year period.

Hindi naman cguro. I have onkyo 656 and a B&W 600 set-up for years and yet i'm still using it. Satisfied ako, until now, sa audio / HT  performance eventhough its a Dolby Digital. Maybe it depends sa owner, how it set-up  and sa orientation nya to use it.  ;D

Hi Guys...

Just want to ask somehting about Onkyo.  I manage to peep through the top grills and saw the PCB inside.  Tanong ko lang kung talagang ganung ang loob ng isang Onkyo? I mean what I saw is that parang nde machine soldered yung sa PCB level... parang handcrafted.

Ganun ba talag yun? Or peke ang ganung Onkyo?

Onkyo owners... please englighten me =)

Thanks.

Hello c_rhomel!

Actually I already ask that topic sometime ago. According to their technician, we should be happy if it's handcrafted cgurado na matibay and  makapal ang pag-solder. Unlike kapag machine manipis! ;)

Fellow onkyo receiver owners,

Ask ko lang if your main speakers sounds louder when switching in stereo mode from 5-channel mode?  I have a tx-ds494 receiver, and I am just wonderin' if this still holds true today.  Thanks!

There's a good chance a receiver's front channels will sound louder in stereo mode than in multichannel mode at a given volume setting.  That's because the power supply is providing its current to just 2 channels in stereo mode, whereas it will have to supply 5 channels in 5.1 mode drawing the same current level.

Onkyo TX-SV 545 was my first avr. It has DD but no DTS decoder. 70 watts output per channel (5 channels). I bought it in 1998. I don't remember the other specs. Hope this helps.

I'm using Onkyo 503, with A an B set of Front Channels, each channel pumps 95W RMS @ 8ohms.
B channel can be used in other location/room to a have a set of speakers, right?

If A and B are both playing, the 7.1 will be reduced to 5.1, maybe because the power is being used by B set of speakers.  Is it possible to combine the front A and B channel to have a higher power? (i don't know the technical terms for bridging and bi-amp)

A Front channel   +   B front channel (positive to positive and negative to negative) then to speaker

I will combine the A and B only for stereo, but setting to A again for movies 7.1

Is it possible? I only made this wild idea as a temporary solution to maximize my AVR potential.
this will be a guage on my upgrades.

I could be wrong,  but if the manual doesn't specify bridging, I won't do it.

Bridging capability is specified in most dedicated power amps,  but I haven't seen such with AVRs.

My AVR doesn't have pre out, what do you think is the best solution aside from upgrading to more power AVR? If I want to add tube amps.

Have 2 separate setups. One for HT and one for audio (tubes). You get the best of both HT & audio. I do this with my current setup but I have to swap wires when I go for my (hybrid) tubes.

Easiest way IMO to swap between 2 setups (w/ one set of speakers) is to have 2 sets of wires with banana plugs at the speaker end, then swap between audio & HT wires at the speaker end, its kinda difficult to crawl & unplug from the amplifier end.

You have to be extra cautious & make sure the wires wont short each other if you turn one setup on. ;)

Maybe that would be effective with higher end receivers claiming ALL CHANNELS DRIVEN (ACD) power ratings for their amp section, meaning each channel can give the posted power rating on each channel at the same time . NAD, Rotel, Arcam, HK does this, also all power amps are ACD. But I noticed that ACD receivers usually DO NOT split their outputs to A & B speakers.

Most mass market receivers rate their power ratings in 2 channels (thus the high numbers) and divide them among 5-7 channels for HT. Let's face it, to make a true 100w x 5-7ch amp is not cheap & will be too heavy & no space will be left for the other electronic parts of the AVR. Just look at & try to lift a 100w x 5 power amp and you will know what I mean.

There are new mid level receivers now ( rated 2 ch, then divide to 7) that you could assign your 6th & 7th channel power to the front via "bi-amping". But I find it questionable if it will give a genuine boost since they will get the power from the same 2 channel source anyway.  :-\

But if there is an ACD receiver that can give its 6th & 7th channel power rating to the fronts for Bi-amping, now THAT is a true power boost.

2 cents, 2 cents!  ;D

As usual, great advice again, I tried the B Speaker and there is no audio coming out from it, possibly it needed an external power to drive it, but it is more complicated than borrowing the 6th and 7channel if its really pumping 95WRMS per channel at 8ohms as the manual say, it will be a great boost.

Assuming I have another 2 channel amp let say 50 rms @ 8ohms, because I dont I have a pre-out I will get the signal from the front channel that has 95RMS.
Is It possible?

What do you think will be the output from the 2nd amp, is it 145 rms?

The front speaker has 2 sets of terminal (hi and lo) what will be the wire connection?

ONKYO                      NEW AMP                          speaker
  +  -    ________         +  -   ___________       hi   +   -
  l                                                                l       lo   +   -
  l________________________________l

I will split the wire from Onkyo going to New amp to drive the hi
and from Onkyo to speaker to drive the low. Is this possible?

TY

I previously owned a 501, and like your 503 it has no pre-out, so you wont be able to connect an external amp. More so, it will be disastrous to connect another amp on the speaker outputs of your 503. You can just do with what the 503 offers, and later on upgrade to another AVR which has pre-outs.

HAVE CHOSEN....I THINK!

am pretty tired as it has been a long long day but wanted to keep you updated in "real time".

As you know I am no Audiophile and would be hard pressed to find the vocabulary to compare the  products I am demoing  so please put up with my novice approach.

Firstly.....a few hic ups today.  Not enough speaker wire in the truck.  They were to bring a spool but they only brought 20 meters when needing 25-30 . ...oh well.....

Bought some speaker brackets from perfect vision which would have been great....but the back of the atoms/titans are a polymer type resin not wood so to drill a hole was not recommended. The ADP 370 surround dipole was also of the same polymer substance on the back so again could not drill( and the bracket that the 370 comes with is not adjustable ...having said that... Never should have bought  brackets in the first place as Paradigm provides  a swivel bracket mount upon request for both the atom and the titan..DUH!    So no worries here.  Must  order them. Unfortunatley for me the Paradigm supplier is closed till Jan 2 or 3

Unwrap the Onkyo and the black one I ordered turned silver ....no biggy the demo will go on!!!!

Set up the speakers with the Atom as surrounds.  The titan is just a bit too big as I feared with my limited head room and space.

Unwrapped the Denon avr 2807   and thought it looked great.  Powered it up and the sound was real clean with the few CD's I played..  At 110 watts per channel I  thought this baby was about to blow me out of the water but must say....it did not. ( These are CD's that I and family had listened to many a time for many a year.).  System sounded real good though. Went on to some movie clips to see how the surrounds would work and they did the trick.  Speakers and receiver seemed to go pretty well with each other. Played a live Rock concert on DVD which is crystal clear in respect to quality.   Like the 90 watt Denon I auditioned in the paradigm shop I slowly cranked it up to  full volume. Was really surprised when the volume indicator stopped moving.    I was looking for the additional 10 watts you had recommended to me before).  Must also say that on the highest volume the speakers seemed to break up...got  muddy...and I was huffing and puffing with what I hoped was Adrenalin.  Unfortunately the Adrenalin was really ....well......dissapointment.     My son looked at me and said....that didn't sound to good there dad.   Asked myself Why were the monitor 7's  whimpering out?

Decided to give the Onkyo a try.  As soon as I put on the same DVD at low levels I noticed a major difference in the body and tone of the music.  Raised the volume  higher and higher and as I did the smile on my face  got bigger and bigger. Cranked up the music to about 90% which was louder than the Denon at full volume and had no break up or muddy sound.  Clear as a bell it was. Cranked up the volume to full and it sounded real good.....no distortion at all.  Tossed on the "red hot Chili peppers live at Slain Castle and it was killer.   Wife and kids came right out and said the Onkyo was better for them.  In my opinuion it was also better for me...big time! Very different than the Denon...much more Alive and open....and more powerful to boot.  Proceeded to listen to the same CD's as before of Usher (to test the sub) some rock, and even some pop (Madonna for the wife) and it was all kick Asssss take no prisoners.

Am happy with the Paradigm speakers and am pleased with the Onkyo.  The combo to "my ears" seems to be the "REAL DEAL"!

I am currently using an entry level Onkyo AVR for my (2ndary) bedroom setup. Its a good performer for its price & very warm (or thick) sounding for an entry level AVR. I combined it with a rather bright sounding JBL satellite speaker system. Great combination, IMO.

I also heard this perform w/ Mission bookshelf speakers, excellent!

A "recommendable" entry level AVR if I may say so.
