France 1 : Portugal 0
an uninspired match, by most respects. Les Bleus pretty much coasted after Zidane knocks in a penalty in the 33rd minute. Portugal spent the better portion of the night trying desperately to break France's back line, which more often than not consisted of 6-7 men.
but surely, the more deserving team is going to Berlin. despite retaining 59% of ball possession, the Portuguese offense was unconvincing at best. in their desperation, they had resorted to play-acting during the most of the second half, when any player managed to get the ball near the French goal, which neither earned the ire or favor of the referee.
in fairness, Portugal had a couple of great chances in the end. C. Ronaldo struck a decent free kick on goal. Barthez bobbled in onto the head on a free Luis Figo, who then inexplicably sailed it over the cross bar. credit to Portugal's keeper Ricardo though. on top of guessing right on Zidane's penalty (which was too masterfully struck to be saved by anyone), he provided some spunk in the final stoppage time as he participated in two Portugal corners.
Vive le France.
