For some time now, I’ve had 4 subs – 2 Paradigm Servo-15 v.2’s, an SVS PB-12 NSD and a Velo HGS-15. In other posts, I've explained that I need so many subs because my dedicated room is so big (about 6300 cubic feet) and the more subs you have, the smoother is your bass.
For a couple of months, I’ve been thinking of replacing the Velo HGS-15 with another SVS PB-12 NSD. The reason is that the Velo can’t go low or too loud and I felt it was likely affecting the overall bass performance, particularly how low the bass could go. Nawawala ang “shake” which you feel with bass that goes below 20 Hz.
I decided to borrow another PB-12 NSD from Mike C. After about 5 hours of setting it up and auditioning (using an SVS AS-EQ1, Audyssey MultEQ Pro and countless experimenting with sub positioning), I was certain that it was making a significant improvement. Now, I can finally feel the “oomph” in Incredible Hulk, Master and Commander, War of the Worlds and other movies. So … I bought it.
To be truthful, you “feel” the effect only with action movies and even then, usually very few times in a film. Yet, that effect is certainly part of what the director intended for the film and if you don’t “feel” it, you don’t get the full experience of the film – it wakes you up!
For now, I’m pretty happy with the speaker set-up … probably until I win the lotto or something similar.
Thanks, Mike!
