Best DVD PQ
« on: Nov 27, 2007 at 06:18 PM »
We have threads for best DVDs for LFE and best DVDs for surrounds, but I haven't seen a thread for best DVDs for picture quality.

I vote for Ratatouille -- I was so amazed that I decided to start this thread.

Yup I second to that: Titanic 3 disc edition is really close to hidef, for me this is the best..,  Lord of the rings series, the extended versions also are great. One disc im really fascinated by for its only 299 is Flight of the Phoenix, it looked pretty sharp to me. I don't know maybe Im just sleepy that night ;D

It's a common misconception that animation is not good demo material because animated features are expected to have sharp, colorful pictures.

On the contrary, animated features are in fact very good test materials because they have a tendency to show not only the best capabilities but also the worst flaws of players, display devices and compression methods.

Animation traditionally has highly saturated colors.  Ironically, it is precisely the high saturation in animation that causes its video flaws to be more obvious.

For example, Pixar's Cars has very good picture quality, but there's still a compression flaw ---- look for posterization.  It's hard to find, but it's there.

Also, Chroma Upsampling Error, also known as "Chroma Bug" or "CUE", is easier to detect in animated features.

Hamlet (1996, Kenneth Branagh)

PQ on Hamlet is reference quality.  Skin tones, color acccuracy and details are gorgeous.  No posterization whatsoever.

To date, it's the last full length feature ever shot entirely on 65mm film.

65 mm film (or 70 mm film) is a wide, high-resolution film gauge, with quality superior to standard 35 mm film.

no one has posted here for quite sometime na.
Anyway due to the recent Astro sale I got a number of DVD that have really good PQ

- Jungle Book Platinum Edition - wonderful PQ, it looks as new as Lion King to me
- Finian's Rainbow - 1968 movie from Francis Coppolla. Colors pop and are wonderfully vibrant
- Collateral - stunning cinematography

"House of Flying Daggers" has an awesome soundtrack but its pq has often been criticized. If you look at the "Echo Dance" scene, you will notice that the whites are overblown and the details are crushed. Have you noticed this as well?

I love this movie so much that when I was in HK, I bought the HK version (double-dip), hoping that the pq was better. It seems better but only marginally. I hope they produce a good BD version with an improved pq (triple-dip!).

Good day gentlemen,

Pardon my ignorance, or maybe OT but I would just like to inquire,
Can you see any difference in terms of PQ between Region 1 and Region 3 DVDs..?

Thanks,
