Poll: What to do with Your HD DVD Player
« on: Jan 06, 2008 at 09:32 AM »
Everyone, including me, considers yesterday's big announcement as the deathblow to HD DVD.   Left with a HD DVD player, what are you gonna do with it?

In my end, with still Universal and Paramount onboard, and unless theres another switch soon, there are still fairly good exclusives to be had in the HD DVD camp.   HD DVD will be a "niche" in my home theater experience.    ;D ;D

I shall continue to buy those HD DVD exclusive to make full use of my player until kaput & enjoy my HD DVD collections for years to come. :)

In fact, once prices go down again as suppliers/retailers will try to dispose them off, it's deemed a great opportunity for bargain hunting. I'm eyeing the A35 to replace my 2nd gen A2. Hopefully, there will be a promo of "Buy 1 Get 2" HD DVD :-X  ;D

It's been a pleasure serving HD DVD & didn't expect the format war could be over that soon. :'(
....at least we got to experience a major format war in our lives...:)

**Looking at the bright side: Our HD DVD players & discs will soon be collectors items. Those who own Tosh 1st gen player should be proud to keep it. :)

....at least we got to experience a major format war in our lives...

I already experienced Beta vs. VHS, and also chose the wrong side on that one! But at least then, almost all Pinoys chose wrong...  ;D

I'm not too wrecked about the new developments, since at $140 with 5 free discs, my Toshiba HD DVD player was practically free... and I was really in the market for an upscaling DVD player, anyway. That was actually the reason I bought one after already deciding to wait out the format war for a while longer - considering the free discs, it was actually much cheaper than the upscaling Philips SD DVD player that I was intending to buy locally.

So... my player's not exactly a paperweight, just yet. It still serves a function for me!

I'm actually more annoyed with Paramount, since had it not been for their HD DVD shift, I would've bought a PS3 many months ago.

haha holy cow...gosh Mr. Hankey, now we know you've experienced & witness the greatest format wars in the history of mankind. Congrat! ;) That's the fun & risk of being an early adopter in a format war.... ;D

True...due to the promo, it was practically a free player & a nice upscalling player too. ;)

I'm actually more annoyed with Paramount, since had it not been for their HD DVD shift, I would've bought a PS3 many months ago.

No worry, it's not too late yet to get a PS3. It's a great entertainment machine & value for money! :)

In the top 100 DVD sellers at Amazon today (all formats), 29 are Blu-Ray (including the top 4), 3 are HD-DVD and the rest are SD.

I guess that says a lot.

more to do with Blu-ray's BOGO since HD DVD ended its BOGO run over a week ago. But im pretty sure the announcement will push some fence-sitters now to invest in HD media.    Take note too, 2007 is the first time DVD sales went down compared to a year before, and HD media has little to do with it.   The drop was attributed to video on demand and internet downloads.

And if you add HD media to DVD sales, I assume there was an increase in sales over last year?

I find it pretty surprising that a third of the top 100 Amazon DVD sales are hi-def.

I updated my earlier post, it seems analysts arent even pointing to HD media as the culprit in the dipping DVD sales, its video on demand and internet downloads.

The warner decision affected me big time. Ok lang I will just stick with the addon but my 360 keeps breaking down. Not very dependable in my opinion. So I still want to get a standalone bec I have more than 100 hddvd discs, Either that or Im thinking of selling all the discs. However, most of the discs I got are good prices from bogo's. Also, I really like most of those titles. Sometimes it hurts (nakakahinayang, because really love those titles) also to sell it off. Another problem Im looking at is this: If hddvd dies and those players that we have right now will no longer read the discs bec of usage. This is the problem I see. Those discs will go to waste. So sell now? I know we can't foresee the future or think about 3 to 5 years from now but It really hurts seeing more than hundred discs just sitting there.. I guess thats the risk we are taking.

Sabagay, we dont even know if hdm will succeed. It still has to overtake/beat dvds, downloads etc. Newer technology maybe coming? I guess we are really taking that risk. As long as there are players available then I think we will be fine. There are already some reports those A1 (first gen) don't read the discs anymore. And these are with the new updates na.

add in The original Star Trek series as another reason why we'll keep our HD-DVD player.

tsk tsk tsk
sana Paramount at least releases the Godfather trilogy on HD-DVD before HD-DVD goes to the grave.

really gumagana mga budget DVD9 ng Magna?

yung R3 Warner ba? does it work?

I wonder if there is a way to unlock the region coding on a HD-A2.

Yup. I have very few Magna budget titles, but so far, The Fast and the Furious and Jesus Christ Superstar work.

Quote
yung R3 Warner ba? does it work?

[Post modified since there was probably an error when I first tried this] Depends on the disc. If it's encoded for multiple regions, it will work. My Nightmares & Dreamscapes R3 DVD works on my HD-A2. Checking it on AnyDVD, although the disc is stamped R3, AnyDVD says it's locked to Region 1-2-3-4.
