wow Alvin congrats on the Magnepan......What sub are you planning to pair it with?

Parinig ha?

Update July 30, 2009

Still learning the REW. In the meantime, I picked up a few gears like the Xindak LC, ipod wireless, Extigy external sound card and the major change for the month, the Magnepan MMG. I gave up the RS6 but kept the RS1.

By the way, here's a graph of the mmg freq response I measured at listening position..50-512hz which would be considered rhythm...lower and upper bass. At 80hz which is normal crossover point, medyo pasok pa. But lower than that, you can see the considerable dips. IMO, most people would likely suggest the use of a sub talaga. When you hear it, baka mabitin ka dyan sa pababa. But I am not that picky right now...maybe later pa siguro pag meron ng budget. hehehe.

Update re Maggie:

Since my listening distance is around 8 feet lang, i had the pair about 5 feet apart and around 24" from the wall, producing more bass than my original placement. I'm thinking na puede na cguro walang sub. Galing ng sound stage nya. And because of the back wave (audio coming out from the back of the speaker), the music sounds more "live".

No regrets...a suitable replacement for my RS6 and indeed a different flavor. ;D

No brader. Dun sa maliit kong room. di kc ako masyado tumatambay sa sala e. Mainit. hehehe.
Anyway, I think better din since I have this weekend project on my acoustic panels...mas ok tunog nya sa room kahit minimal pa lang ang treatment ko. :D

Anak ng teteng jake...tsk tsk tsk...

"As previously mentioned, the MMGs also require a healthy amount of amplifier power. I’d recommend a minimum of 85 watts per channel into 4 ohms (w/ch @ 4W) for an average room. I used 120 watts per channel in this review. The receiver or amplifier used also needs to be 4-ohm stable. The MMGs present a nearly constant 4-ohm load over their operating range, which requires a lot of current as well as watts. Most modern receivers cannot provide enough current for the MMGs. Some receivers will have a switch on the back for 4-ohm operation, and if you’re not sure if your unit is stable for 4-ohms, call the manufacturer.

If you are buying a receiver or amplifier for the MMGs, you can still find them at affordable prices. For example, the Harman/Kardon HK 3380 or HK 3480 will drive them easily, and both are available for under $200 (refurbished with warranty) at www.harmanaudio.com. Vintage amplifiers from NAD also work well with the MMGs and are available for under $200. (Look for the PE “Power Envelope” series.)

Most home theater receivers are not rated for 4 ohms and will not drive these speakers. A home theater receiver that will drive them is the Onkyo TX-SR805, which is rated for 4-ohm operation. A good friend has a full set of Magnepan MMG speakers and her TX-SR805 does a great job driving them."

I've heard 'em Maggies both in Acoustic Dimension in Rockwell as well as in Singapore - very malambing ang sound.
I also considered 'em kaso pang mayaman lang yang speaker na yan eh kasi it requires lots of power to sing (4ohms) and dapat ata naka aircon 24/7?  ;D

Totoo din 'to brader. Tutunog naman cya even lower yung amp rating cyempre but to be sure, safe and maximize your system, better to follow the manufacturer's reco. Yun small room ko pag nasa bahay ako e parang naiiwan ko nga yung AC na on most of the day. hehehe.

I also considered 'em kaso pang mayaman lang yang speaker na yan eh

Na mis-inform ka dito brader...hehehe. Ako witness dyan...puede dito ang oks lang... ;D ;D ;D

Brader - I cant recall if I heard it or read it somewhere, but it seems that the materials in the maggies may have an adverse effect in our humid weather condition (tropical), thus aircon is a requirement. Sa mahal ng meralco ngayon, pang mayaman lang yan eh :D ;D

By the way brader Mac, thanks for the sms-1 suggestion...

I contacted Sir Mark and he might replace his unit sometime later. But he thinks REW also offers more features though it is a bit more complicated.  :'(

Brader - if you will dig deeper talagang malalim pa ang matutuklasan mo, but then comes the inevitable gastos & upgrade..........till your sanity escapes you  :D ;D  For me, I have resigned to the fact that hanggan dito nalang muna for now at mahirap na.

If you already have a commercial powered subwoofer, konti lang ang magagamit mo sa sms1 - basically just the small number of EQ & the opportunity of seeing how your sub talks via a graph in your tv.
I think the SMS1 fits more to the DIY sub users, kasi it has features that is important - like phase, subsonic filter, gain, low pass filter, etc.
Those things you already have in the plateamp of your commercial subwoofer, but sa aming DIY wala yun.

If you want to improve things considerably & you have a commercial sub, then the SVS EQ1 might be a better solution for you. It has more EQ than the sms1 tapos multiple sweet spot locations pa. However, wala sya graph that you can see sa TV - pero pwede yata sya connect to a laptop for calibrating the EQ.
Kindly PM MikeC about that - he would know more.

Eto yung discussion thread:

http://www.pinoydvd.com/index.php?topic=97437.0

Good luck sa quest brader - it is kinda daunting talaga :P

Achilles heel ko yan brader...take all the material things away from me, hwag lang ang aircon...hehehe.  ;D

I will have to make the most of what I have now and 'save up' for whatever amp comes up...so I'm not rushing.  ;D ;)

I know exactly what you mean bro...believe it or not, I am more inclined into learning how to use the REW.

Whatever shortcomings/sad discoveries that would come up from my current set-up's graphs will just have to wait for its "I hope it happens in this lifetime" upgrade. hehehe. Pero yung mga adjustments, I can do now..you know, like move the speakers a little to the left, move that sub two inches that direction...etc, etc, etc. hehehehe.  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks sa info brader...i really appreciate it.  :D
