what is EXT3? not the same as NTFS?

Ext3 is a linux filesystem as NTFS is Windows'. Since Egreat is using linux as native OS, Ext3 drives should logically play much better than NTFS'.

Bro -- what iiinas referred to in this post i think was the WDTV and not the M34A. So though the M34A has no Internal HD, it still has the network capability. This is the reason of the slightly higher price.

Hi Hubes.  All my NTFS  hard drives are connected externally to the Egreat 31B.  I have no internally connected hard drive.  It should be the same for the 34A.

Initial impressions?

pq SEEMS slightly more grainy than the wd, but it has none of the wd's pixelation bugs with fast moving scenes...  and colors are definitely more vibrant...

What does this "more grainy" thing means sa pq? does it mean the the WDTV is better in pq?

What does this "more grainy" thing means sa pq? does it mean the the WDTV is better in pq?

Please take note of my use of "SEEMS"  ;D

Here are my best attempts at elaborating on this:

Firstly, if you are defining PQ on a per frame basis, I would have to say yes, as far as initial impressions go, the WD was able to produce sharper frames.

*Just to have a bit of science behind it,  I played a couple of 720p and 1080p files on both the 34A and the WD.  Generally speaking, the dots (pixels?) that make up the pic frame SEEMED to be packed together more closely with the WD.

HOWEVER,  I don't just base it on the Frame sharpness.  It looked to me that the 34a was able to handle fast moving scenes. ( I'm assuming that some of you have also experienced pixelization around fast moving objects when using the WD)

I do have to say that unless you are very near the screen, the slight advantage of the WD is barely noticable.

there is that issue with choppy play of large files for the egreat when the external drive is not formatted in the 34a's native/optimal format of EXT3.  I'll post as soon as I am able to reformat .

Thnks bro for this review. Another issue that needs discussion should be about NTFS VS. EXT3 on the M34A.

Moreover, will there be a problem on compatibility of EXT3 formatted HD if used on a windows based PC.

Does the eGreat have write access even if the drives are formatted in NTFS (a classic linux problem is writing to NTFS partitions)?  I ask this since it does have a torrent client and it would need to write the downloaded packets onto the external drive.

Verbl Kint, from what I know the egreat can only write to its internal drive (or in my m34a the SATA drive attached to the provided SATA cable) which the egreat formats to EXT3 upon installlation. It can't write to NTFS or FAT usb connected drives.

I THINK I was able to format my new 1tb mybook to EXT3 successfully today.  ;D The process ends up being relatively simple (2 small downloads, one iso cd burn, 1 format, with a total of 2 or 3 reboots) if you have a bit of patience.   ;) (I am admittedly a Linux virgin  ;D)

I'm in the process of transferring the contents of one of my NTFS mybooks to the blank EXT3 one in WinXP (ANTAGAL  :'()  However, I won't be able to test if I did it correctly in terms of egreat compatibility as I am currently TV-less.  :P  Once my new screen arrives, I'll post my observations.

At the very least, the drive is already in EXT3 format, and is detectable with read/write function in XP. (Please note that a free third-party open source driver is needed to be manually downloaded and then installed for Windows to understand the EXT3 format.)

Once I confirm that the egreat has no issues with the drive, I can post the process for those who are interested...

got mine this afternoon. thanks richie and to your staff!  :)

used to to have the western digital hd tv player, medyo mas mabagal nga boot up ng egreat.  but it can play most of my files way way better. dvd menu is supported, pixelation in some "heavy" mkv is gone plus additional features not present in wd tv.  also the up coming dts down mixing capability is a huge plus (i dont have an avr to decode dts and i dont like converting files).

while i was trying to setup it up earlier, i used the hdmi cable that came with it.  walang audio na lumalabas sa tv (32inch sony s series) kahit ano gawin ko.  i checked the internet and read a post in networkmediatank.com forum to set m34a's output to 1080i, but no luck.  then i decided to use my hdmi cable i bought from cdr-king, gumana! yung difference lang ng cable is yung sa cdr-king may parang bilog malapit dun sa isang end while yung included the egreat straight lang sya.

my 34a is connected via optical to samsung htib, great sounds especially with DTS enabled mkv files. i also connected the 34a to an amp thru rca cables for playing concerts, but unfortunately DTS enabled concert files have no sound output thru this connection, is there a workaround? i tried selecting "analog" in the setup page for the DTS files, but it is disabled.

wala pa kasing DTS down mix update kaya hindi pa gagana yan sir..
DTS will work only thru optical and HDMI(using a receiver)..pag rca ang ginamit wala siyang sound na lalabas..pag HDMI din connected to tv wala ding sound..
