Title: WDTV LIVE / WDTV2 Media Player
Post by: natosan on Oct 19, 2009 at 11:54 AM
starting a new thread for this updated version of WDTV.... mahaba na ang thread for the WDTV.

here are some of the links...

http://www.wdtvlive.com/
http://wdtvforums.com/

according to the distributor, stocks will be arriving next week so by end of next week it should be at the dealers already.

here's the bad news, the estimated SRP is more expensive than the current competition (HDPro, Xtreamer, Cinematube). well, the higher specs and better GUI may be well worth it for some.

That's a bummer(At least for me hehe). Kung mas mura to, ok sana. Pero kung mas mahal, not worth it. Unang-una I hate the remote. Pangalawa hindi pede lagyan ng HD sa loob. Pangatlo, baka mangyari ulit yung tulad ng nangyari sa WDTV1 hehe! Support issues.  ;D

did they give a good buy promo when WDTV first came out? it's better be a big discount kasi sabi sa akin it's nearing 5 digit pricing.

I think the best time to buy wdtv2 is after 6 mos as new owners will feed back issues that will be corrected and updated in their firmware releases and by that time they already lower their prices. just my opinion ::)

That's actually a reasonable price, considering its specs and reported performance over the realtek nmts. The original WDTV sold for P6900 retail when it first came out here.

Definitely it is reasonable, compared to other existing nmts out there. I actually owned a wdtv before, had to sell it though due to SARS  ;D... kaya lang baka magkaroon ng group buy, a hundred bucks less  mean a lot!

Lets try to analyze this pricing scheme further and I do apologize for being skeptical....... but i would be more than happy to be proven wrong on this when the WD2 comes out.

The first WD had a retail of $100 and was selling here for about 6.9k. The WD2 is a much improved version of the first one with added hardware - the networking port, thus it now retails for $150 in WD's website. If we base pricing on the first WD, then I'm afraid we may be looking at a price point of almost hitting the 5 figure mark ???
Of course, Im crossing my fingers that it isnt so.......hope they feel how competition is slowly creeping up on them fast before establishing a price mark.

The appeal of the first WD Media Player to most was its inexpensive price, which actually fits perfectly to those who dont mind networking capabilities. While it does have a lot of shortcomings compared to NMTs that are coming out nowadays, its PQ is still considered as one of the best and still being compared to a lot of newer NMTs of today.

I guess we could only hope for the best  ;)

After calling Axis Global & talking to their GM of Sales - there would be limited stocks of the WD2 which is expected to arrive by next week. SRP is 9.5k.

Hmm, at that price I would go for ... the WD Live pa rin, since it employs the newer and faster Sigma chip, as fast as or faster than the new Sigma chip on the Popcorn Hour 200, if I'm not mistaken.  :)

But, I won't ...

... since we've been pampered by the low price and very good performance of the realtek NMTs (i.e., assuming they stay at their introductory, group buy promo prices and not their list prices, which I believe are in the P7K+ range. At the list price of P7500 for the Xtreamer and P7800 for the HD Pro, the WD Live will start looking inexpensive already).

The performance of the WD Live has to be pretty special for me to buy at that official price....  ;D

sir, I think In terms of chipset, WDTV Live uses the latest sigma and HDX 1000 is the same as WDTV1 chipset, correct me if im wrong. HDX housing is aluminum while WDTV Live is plastic (I presume similar to WDTV1)  but acdg to Bitstream HDX 1000 has many features that other NMTs dont have:-[

www.iboum.com seems to give the WD Live 4 stars, while most other NMTs got 3 - wonder why ::)

I could see 3 ways of possibly getting the WD Live a bit cheaper:

1. Thru a US friend/relative who could buy it in Best Buy for $119
2. That Tipidpc seller offering at 6.5k (need to verify)
3. From any of our PDVD members/sellers who accepts orders from the US - maybe they could offer a group buy?

Seems like the age old question of Intel vs AMD chips to me...  ::)

ot:

although there is no "real" data to really say which chip is better, but by browsing over topics here in the nmt section and what i have seen during the cinematube eb (realtek). i can say imho, that realtek chips on the get go is really fast in booting and recognizing hard disk while the sigma chips even with the new one employed by the c-200 will be no match by the speed of the realtek chips (i can be wrong, but based on what i have seen 5 secs for boot-up and less than 10 secs for 1 tb hdd recognition, thats tough to beat). and another thing, realtek based players seems to be more affordable than sigma based players (this is based on same feature sets players) but of course there will be exceptions to this.

but one thing going for sigma chips is a lot of the multiple owners of both nmt/media player made comments here like that wdtv (sigma) and even egreats seems to give a better pq than the hd pros out there, even during the eb, the egreat (sigma) did show a slight edge in the pq department as against cinematube (realtek).

but i guess and hope some professional will soon make a review of said products and have "real" data to finally show which is better.  :)

I'm no professional in this regard, and certainly no audio/video phile. :D

I also dont have a NMT, only realtek based media player.

My observation is based on realtek media player vs. Media Player Classic on windows.

Although acceptable, I noticed that my realtek players seems more grainy and has detail loss especially on dark scenes. And colors are a bit washed out. Not sure if this is also the case for NMTs out there. ;)

Note:
I'm not sure if this has got something to do with my observation, but I used VGA cable to connect my laptop on my TV (no HDMI out for my laptop). While the media players used HDMI.

OT:

maybe you can start a thread on sigma vs. realtek  ;D

even if the sigma based nmt i'm using is slower, I can't give up the feature of installing a moviejukebox such as YAMJ and different skins. The experience is entirely different as compared to just simply browsing folders or files. It's easier and faster.

I've read the xtreamer has their own jukebox but it isn't really customizable like those for sigma based chips.

Thanks for sharing brader Aynz ;)

So, to sum up your observation:

Sigma = better PQ
Realtek = faster boot time

I do have the WD first version and I cant complain on its speed when booting up my 2 1tb HDD connected to it. Well, the WD is the first thing I power-on before I power other components & roll down my pj screen - so by the time I get settled comfortably, the WD player is ready to go.
I could only assume that the newer WD Live hopefully be faster than the first version due to a more advance Sigma chip.

I am also guessing that when watching movies via 32"-42" LCD or plasma, either a Sigma or Realtek based player would basically have the same PQ.........but from other members' feedback, it seems Realteks is still a bit behind in the PQ department.

This could be a concern most specially to those who have non-1080p projectors - as you know, a better PQ helps a lot ;)

maybe it is just me as i find my m34a(sigma chip) has a granier pic output than my xtreamer lalo na sa dark scenes. Note that default lang ang settings ko(both for tv and the player). But i can also say that when i still have my wdtv1, it also has a more refined pq than the egreat, to think that both used the sigma chip. Baka firmware ang salarin ::)

I used to have a wdtv, then an egreat, now an xteamer. so what are my personal observations

PQ is the same for all three, all can be tweaked to your liking, color, contrast , hue etc.
but speed in booting, recognition of hdd. the best realtek. the wdtv and egreat are like turtles compared to a horse having a leg race.

my own opinion lang.

sir, imo, scrutinizing between chipsets is like running around a circle, walang katapusan yan. there are pros and cons to it. Ang magiging endpoint is what satisfies you...i have experienced using nmts with the two processors, may mas mahal at mas mabagal pero maganda ang GUI(other users dont mind waiting for a longer boot time coz they have other things to mind prior watching like setting up the pj and screen or ihanda ang tsitsirya ;D, while others gusto pag-on ng unit nood agad). Ako mayroon nmt na puedeng maglagay ng hdd sa loob coz i want it to be in a permanent place, while the other one ang nagustuhan ko is the ability to bring it with me when i go to other location, puede ko ibulsa :D. Yung price i think is not a factor kasi kahit mahal kung nagagawa yung "kailangan mo" at kaya mo bilhin go for it...or pag ipunan mo. ;D

Just back read all threads re nmts, accumulate the pros and cons, then decide for yourself. Kasi pag maghihintay ka kung ano yung  tested at reliable, baka obsolete na ang current sigma/realtek... ;D ;D ;D

In my eye popping back read I learned that NMTs and MPs are like liquor, gusto mo mura, smooth, at magaang dalin.

But the best simile I got was an email from a distro who said and I quote, they're like women, we want them tall, slim, graceful and smart but most of all cheap.

I believe what he meant was we cannot get everything from one product.

Thanks for the posts.
The thing with this player is not that it is perfect, but that it is better than the rest. Every player has it's problems. Xtreamer/ACRyan-fan, realteks/sigma8635-poor or slow interface, Tvix6600-price. The combination of performance, price, availability from a trusted brand, and no major problems is why we gave the WDTV Live 4*. More people will be happy with the WDTV Live than with any of the other players.
I will add something about the component problem to this page, as it is significant (although most people will use HDMI). The other problems you mention tend to vary according to the user and are fairly 'minor' to the bigger picture.

Based on specs, perhaps 4 stars, but overall 2 stars only because of VERY POOR SUPPORT by WDC as per experience of WDTV owners including me.  :(

Hi, would you please elaborate on the very poor support of wdc?

I think this has more to do with the lack of DTS downmix for the first WDTV which has been adapted by most of the popular NMTs, even if, as some has reported, the hardware of the original, is capable of doing the downmix.

Having a WD1 myself, I've read a lot of forums where owners were clamoring for a DTS downmix - which at the time WD was trying to secure its license.
At this point, its purely speculation what corporate decision WD has with the license if it would still provide to the WD1 or just start anew with the WD2 instead.

Due to a lot of owner's opinions & recommendations, WD may have felt that whatever FW may be created for the WD1 - it may never be competitive with a lot of newer media players of today and that creating a new player from scratch would be more of an ideal solution.
Definitely, some changes/additions to its hardware & chipset was in order to achieve their corporate goals - which is why WD2 or LIVE was created.

It's not only the DTS downmix. There other suggestions from WDTV owners and FW upgrade promises by WDTV that are just that.... PROMISES!  :(  :-\

As an owner of WDTV 1, I really find only two things problematic with it:

1) DTS downmix: in my case, not really a problem since I use a receiver; and

2) the isolated problem of  an unresponsive remote, because of conflict with some settings on my Panasonic Plasma. From what I've read, it's a physical/hardware design flaw, but applying electrical tape to the WD TV resolves the problem. (I hope this is solved in WD TV Live).

All the other feature requests in the link I can actually live without, for a product that's designed to be cheap and simple.

In my experience, I've had more teething problems out of the box with my realtek player (but now it's somewhat working well as well, for what I bought it for: a movie player.  ;D). :)

Challenger shop standard costs is 209 sgd. You can find 190sgd in some smaller shops at Funan mall.

Sim Lim shop in Bugis should be cheaper, but sellers are cheaters so beware.

Go to Mustafa Centre. One thing I like are the cheap prices of electronic gadgets;e.g. portable DVD players; celphones, NMT's, etc., as compared to Funan Shopping mall or Chinatown! Prices are what is indicated in the tags so your don't have to haggle. One thing though, you should know what you really want since the salespersons might not know the specs of the unit. Do your homework first!

Address is 145 Syed Alwi Rd Singapore

Check out the message thread at:

I had the WDTV Live two weeks ago. It would not play the WMA Pro audio on some of the WMV files I had. Some of the files it would not even play at all.

The Xtreamer plays everything I have, and is even working on getting CSS licensing to play encrypted DVDs from an external drive.

PQ seemed to be pretty close on both. The only advantage that the WDTV Live had over the Xtreamer is that it was quieter. The Xtreamer has a passive solution available now however, which is quite nice.

ME: "WDTV is quieter" refers to its fan-less design

I believe its 6,650 with an acknowledgment receipt only, but if you need an OR then add 12%. Yes, warranty is honored with the acknowledgment receipt from the seller/shop.

Got a WD TV Live from eHome in Greenhills, thanks Richie!

It's definitely much faster and better than the original WD TV. I had no problems setting it up, even the network (wired) settings. The YouTube feature worked right from the bat. It even has a Preview Option for viewing files: filenames on the left and a preview pane upper right, basic file details below--similar to the Realtek preview screen (in HD Pro etc) but better looking and the filename list accommodates more characters per line. Remote was very responsive and its small size and supposed lack of buttons (compared with other players) didn't bother me because the navigation buttons were enough to speed me through the menus or a movie itself.

The Animatrix and Die Hard 3 videos that were treated as invalid files on the HD Pro ran without a problem from the USB drive. So did Meet the Robinsons. Will do further testing on other files in the coming days, including watching movies streamed over the network.

Plus the external USB drives attached to it are visible on the network, allowing me to access them on my mac and my HD Pro!  :)

I would say yes: My WDTV Live conection is currently via cat 5 cable to my wifi-G 10/100 wifi router. But I was able to copy a file from my MacBook Pro connected to my network via wifi. I might experiment with a USB wifi adaptor but since my setup is near my router, I'd rather go wired because it's faster and frees up my 2 USB ports for external drives.  :)

I got it from eHome which currently sells it at P6900. Abacus and another store in VMall currently sells it for P7400. Cheers!  ;D

How about the video quality, as compared to your other nmts? I find egreat m34a has a grainier pq compared to the wdtv v1...hopefully pq of this live is the same or better than its predecessor.

Hmmm, I find my m34a (flashed w/ PCH-A110 firmware) video/audio wise better than WDTV.  But now I find the WDTV2 quality the same as my m34a.

thanks, that confirms the notion that the firmware is really the difference maker, because i never bother to use other firmware that is compatible with my m34a other than the ones released by egreat. I have my wdtv v1 before and i can say pq is superb and i am really leaning towards buying the live due to its superior technical specs.

I preferred the PQ of the WDTV 1 over my HD Pro, but used the HD Pro more because it was more responsive and had less/no issues with files that were problematic with the WDTV.

To me, the WD TV Live has better PQ than both WDTV 1 and HD Pro, somehow the image looks more compelling.

The PQ of the wdtv 1 was the best for me than any other media player out there. I tried almost everything but wdtv still tops them all.

With what you said......I'm gonna get one this week!

oo nga madalang.. just sold 5 units pa lang.. a bit pricey kasi.. but it plays well the 1080p's that cannot be played in wdtv1..

What about playability of 1080p mkvs?

based on what ive read so far, even the hard to play 1080p mkvs with high frame rate have no problems playing with the live, this i have yet to confirm. Most of the problems are network related(per avsforum) so if you plan to stream all your 1080 files through network either wired or not, expect some sort of headache lalo na at hindi ka tech savvy.

So far so good at least with some files in my collection, for example:

Spiderman 1 (10GB):
- WDTV 1: unplayable, pixellated and jerked a lot
- HD Pro: no more pixellation but it still jerked a bit, much less but noticeable
- WDTV Live: no pixellation, smooth and no jerkiness  ;D

Indiana Jones 4 (14-15GB):
- WDTV 1: lots of pixellation, jerkiness
- HD Pro: smooth but still had brief pixellation at just before 8 min mark
- WDTV 2: the pixellation at just before the 8 min mark was still there

Meet the Robinsons (6.5GB)
- WDTV 1: didn't get to test
- HD Pro: lots of green pixellation
- WDTV 2: no pixellation problem

Chicken Little (4.37GB)
- WDTV 1: unplayable, pixellated and jerked a lot
- HD Pro: no more pixellation but it still jerked a bit, much less but noticeable
- WDTV Live: no pixellation, smooth and no jerkiness  ;D

Tested the Godfather 20+GB files briefly, no apparent problems. Also tested Quantum of Solace 28GB mts file briefly, no problems also.

So in terms of playability I would rank the WDTV Live as definitely number 1, HD Pro a good number 2 (although it also had problems with 2 files that ran well with both WD TVs), and the WDTV 1 a poor number 3.

I read that too, and in brief testing, the more potentially problematic files might be iffy streamed over the network via wifi (e.g. Indian Jones stuttered but it played smoothly over USB) unless your network is fully tweaked (I'm sure mine isn't). No problem with 720p files I downloaded.

Yes, there shouldn't be any problems transferring files or similar file management functions over wifi-G, it would just be slower.

Bili na jo, I sold my wdtv 1 when i upgraded to m34a which i also sold after 2 months used(partly because of the grainy pic, and the snail-pace boot up.) I have my other nmts, and i can say they serve me well, never had any issue of playability problems...but i am going to acquire the live due to its reputation of playing even the high frame rate files and hopefully it can somehow live up to its predecessor's superb pq output.

Please try to watch the entire Godfather.  Ive been informed by another member that even the HDX cant handle this.   Thus so far, only the Tvix can allegedly play this trilogy smoothly from start to finish.

Regarding the m2ts file, the WDTV Live passes through HD audio?  What's the audiostream of that Quantum of Solace?

Will do, once I get the chance to have the TV all to myself (i.e. no 5yo son asking to watch a movie with no violence :)) Which of the three would be most problematic?

As for HD Audio and Quantum, I won't be able to test that since my yamaha receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs and my connection is via optical. How do I verify what audiostreams Quantum has?

All the 3x27GB trilogy is a tremendous challenge to any NMT, HDD media players, including underpowered and wrongly configured PCs.  My Egreat 31B cant play it smooth enough regardless of FW version - the jerkiness and/or synch issues can happen at any point in the movie - you can try the scene when Don Vito was castigating his eldest son for interrupting him while talking to the mob group who wanted to do drugs - wala pang fast action scene yon.

You mentioned testing the 28GB Quantum Of Solace mts (m2ts?) briefly.   What was the sound? DTS or DD or stereo?

got mine today....itchiness was too much for me

tested some of my movies and got amazed with the picture quality....way much better than the previous model. also tops most of the other media players as well in terms of PQ...so smooth, cool and relaxing to the eyes. currently exploring the other features.

this is i think the 5th or 6th nmt i tried and this one is definitely for keeps as well as my xtreamer which has functions exclusively different from the other. one thing i'm missing though is the internal hard drive capability which the xtreamer has. also much more expensive with lesser features.

Yup, for pure movie viewing pleasure, this is currently the one, and to me worth the budget-level price of up to P7K.  :)

If you have special or other needs,  consider (partnering it with) another player:

: for a host of web services including ip cams etc. and you want to free up your pc/mac, it looks like xtreamer has it covered
: for connectivity, via component video and/or coaxial audio, and huge (i.e., terabyte) internal storage, the HD Pro has that covered...
: for the most affordable but equally capable realtek-based player, I think that would be the cinematube and if I'm not mistaken the R1.

How is the aspect ratio handled?  Is it locked to full screen (as allegedly was the case with the 1st gen WDTV) - which crops and degrades the IQ of "wider" movies, or is there an option to choose what AR you want, especially the native one?

I don't see any cropped areas on the sides if I zoom out to check.

Ok I'll re-phrase my question - is it possible to view the native aspect ratio of a movie?  For example, 1:2.35 AR or wider movies - how does the WDTV Live display that?  Full screen only or very wide view with huge black bars at the top and bottom of the screen?

A 16:9 TV would be filled when the AR is 1:1.78 or 1:1.85.  Hence if the original AR is 1:2.35 or wider, the movie would have to be magnified to fill the 16:9 screen, hence the cropping on the sides and the degradation of the image quality as a whole.

Thanks

Ah ok, in that case, the movies are displayed in their native aspect ratio with black bars on top and below and not forced to full screen, i.e. fill the screen, on my 1080p Panny plasma.

Actually even for WDTV 1, I don't remember my wide(r)screen movies being forced to full screen...

My understanding of the supposed problem is that WDTV 1 displays the widescreen movies with black bars on top and below, but crops the sides a bit so that that the image is zoomed in a bit and only 95% of the actual image is displayed. If this is the issue, my answer is the same: I don't see this problem.  :)

Thanks.

You read my mind! hehe  ;D

I was actually thinking of testing the component video out and maybe even the composite AV out just to be complete. Will keep you posted.  :)

As for the issues, browsing through avforums, I get the impression that if one has problems, it would be related to setting up and/or tweaking the network, especially for those using Windows 7 (which I assume is due to the fact Win7 just came out officially and teething problems with devices are to be expected, and eventually resolvable).

To me, nice to have would be internal storage (that's why I chose the HD Pro over the other players last Sept-early Oct). Maybe torrent downloads. Web-based services like YouTube etc are nice to try once, maybe show off to friends, but I won't find myself using them a lot--I think it's still easier to access them with a PC/Mac. Audio features, well, I have a separate audio set up.  :)

Personally, I think it boils down to what one wants from his media player:

If one wants possibly the best high def movie player today at a budget level price level, then the WDTV Live is it. While it can also do other stuff, its core competence and the primary reason for buying would be HD Movies. (I fall under this category, to paraphrase that "classic": "I want my, I want my, I want my MKV." hehe  ;D)

If one wants the heftiest feature-set--video, audio, web, webcams, iPhone remote etc.--then maybe the realtek players, led by the Xtreamer is more appropriate. (I'm also kind of a gadget-geek, so ....  ;D)

Aha, let me answer that...

I thought that the sound was too "soft" to sufficiently drive my amp but noticed that the sound would go wild during effects scenes.

One mistake I made was watch "Drag Me To Hell" at 3am, I got scared crapless. I like the signal strength, it has drama.  ;D

Yes it's the WDTV Live that I have. I wouldn't categorize it as weak since there are really loud passages when the scene demands it. I set the volume to a comfortable level with dialog scenes but gets really loud with action/effects scenes, must be with regards to compression.

I would say that the sound is rather uncompressed, for example, all is well during the scene with the kid who stole jewelry then all hell breaks out when the ground opens up!  ;D

We have the Unborn on our list for tonight, wish me luck... ;D ;D ;D

Yes sir, maybe because you are using an AVR. But I am only using the TV's audio so the player is downmixing.

Actually I also notice it on regular DVDs, when you select 2ch audio it will become weaker compared to 5.1 channel audio.

Thanks.

I've been asking myself the same question.......well, actually I have a WDTV1 and its gotta be the only media player that got criticized the most compared to the others - no dts, simple gui, no jukebox, no networking.........and the list goes on. you should see how this player and its company gets bashed on other international forums.
However, it was indeed the cheapest "player-only" when it came out and i have to admit that its PQ in both plasma & PJ is so stunning that some of my bluray friends left scratching their heads.
I guess it grew on me just like an old pair of comfortable jeans or sneakers :P

But like anything, we do upgrade.....and I've already set my sights on a different player/NMT and was ready to buy it last month. But i kinda held back on that purchase to give both the WD player & its company another chance by waiting and see what the new player has to offer.

I now believe it was worth the wait :)

I now believe it was worth the wait :)

so you got one already sir mac?

Thanks Gaol.

Next question, have you tried that maverick looking component video output of the WDTV Live?  Im sure your plasma has component video input.

Tried the custom component video cables, and it worked. You have a choice of YUB or RGB, and output resolutions from 480p to 1080i.

Thanks Gaol.  The limit in resolution could actually have been triggered by the highest setting of the plasma itself via component video connection, which is most likely 720p or 1080i.   This is quite good already and a BIG PLUS for WDTV for making this output option available, thus compatible with all types of HDTVs and high def monitors.

When are you going to sit down for more than 3 hours for The Godfather Eureka?    ;D  That file is really the toughest test and if the WDTV can actually play the entire movie smoothly and flawlessly, it would likely play 99% of MKVS available - then Im going to get this for Xmas.  :)

I think the limit is 1080i for my 1080p plasma. Actually the 720p output via component video of a 720p movie looks very good.  :)

As for The Godfather, hopefully this weekend I get to watch. Otherwise, there's time yet before Xmas.  ;D Or maybe the other WD TV live owners can chime in.  ;)

Have you tried connecting a wifi dongle to connect to your router? Seems like a good idea for non-critical network connection and saves me from routing my cat5.

Hi Jojo, yes I tried a Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter, it didn't work (didn't work too on the HD Pro).

Western Digital lists the following as having been tested and shown to work with the WD TV Live:

The Xtreamer USB Wireless-N Antenna/Dongle uses a "Ralink RT3070 Single Chip" solution.  This MAY work; the chipset is a "higher" model than that used in the wireless devices listed that have been tested to run on the WD TV Live .  Retail price is P1,100.00

That's a very good observation Sir, I have an Edimax USB wifi dongle that uses Ralink too on one of our PCs. Bought that one for P700 iirc.

Thanks!

i tried connecting my xtreamer antenna to the wdtv live but can't get it to work, im using a d-link di-524 router and has no problem with the combination with the xtreamer, ayaw sa wdtv live

probably thwe wdtv live isn't compatible with my router

let me test it again and find a workaround before the weekend

Hi! I'm not sure if it will work with the WD TV Live... it MAY work.  The RALINK chip used in the Xtreamer wi-fi appears to be a super-set of that used in the USB devices listed by Western Digital

You can pick up an Xtreamer USB Wireless-N Antenna at:

ABACUS MICRO

4th Floor, Shangri-La Mall

I just bought my very first NMT and I'm now a satisfied wdtv live owner. For a newbie, the simplicity of the menu makes familiarization very easy. 1090p movies have played smoothly, though in-movie scanning has no chapter search capability, but rather a 10minute increment or the usual fast forward.
I have only tried it with the av out and will try it with the hdmi later. Boot up time was quite quick too. Overall a very worthy choice at it's price point.
thanks Richie for attending to me :)

A minor firmware update has been posted on the WDTV site:

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_live (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfwdtv_live)

What's new!

Release 1.01.11 (11/16/09)
Added more USB WLAN adaptor support. Click here for list of compatible adaptors.
Added cover art display function when viewing music files in album view.
Added user selectable on/off for fade in and fade out effect while browsing files.
Resolved issue of no audio when there is only a single, center channel audio stream in a video.
How to Install the Product Update:

Extract the three files (.BIN, .VER, and .FFF files) to the root (top level) of a portable USB drive.
Connect the USB drive to the WD TV Live Media Player's USB port.
Press HOME, and then select the Settings bar.
Select the firmware upgrade icon, and then press ENTER.
You are prompted to perform the firmware upgrade.
Select OK on the firmware update prompt, and then press ENTER. This will restart the system.
After restarting, the system automatically enters firmware upgrade mode.
Once the update process is completed, the WD TV Live HD Media Player will restart again.
Once the HD WD TV Live Media Player restarts, the new firmware is automatically loaded and the WD TV Live HD Media Player is ready for use.

I think it's also possible to update via the WDTV network connection itself but no mention of it above....

Yes, it's available in some local shops. I got mine from eHome in Annapolis, Greenhills.

With the original version of the WDTV, yes. The Live uses the Sigma 8655 chip which is much faster and handles high bitrate mkv files with no problems, or if any, much less.

BUT, there's a 2nd generation of WD TV, that uses the same Sigma chip as the Live, but with no networking. If  you don't need networking, get this one instead of the older generation WD TV for less bucks.

I don't know but once the stocks of the old gen WD TV run out it should be.

You just have to make sure that you're getting the new gen (Model: WDBABF0000NBK) vs the old one (Generation 1, model:WDAVN00). Their boxes, including the Live box, look very similar.

have a chance to test it last night, all the 1080p's i tried played smoothly..

even the 42gb transformers 2 and 41gb pirates 3 bdrip plays smoothly.. problem is the subtitle doesnt display yet..

picture is superb and remote response is better compared to wdtv1..

runs cool as well..

Does this mean that the WDTV Live does not read any .srt files or it just not displays subtitle for bdrips? I think this is a big concern for us consumers.

Generally I've had no problems with subtitles for those movies I have with subtitles. The one minor issue I notice is that the subtitles for Kung Fu panda are placed higher on the screen than I would want them, but no biggie.

... Or wait a bit for feedback from the US forums (AVS etc.) if it's all ok.  :)

I was tempted to update via network since it was convenient, good thing I held back and checked the forums first.

BestBuy's online price is $119 but on their brick n' mortar stores it is at $149.
We went to another BestBuy branch during the Black Friday sale but the unit is not available. We also visited Walmart and Target stores but they don't have WDTV Live so we ended up on online store.

The same thing actually happened to us.
I asked my cousin in Hawaii to troop to his nearest Best Buy outlet to get me a WDTV Live. He did get one & told me that it costs a total of US$157 including Hawaii's 7.5% state tax.
I was a bit surprised & asked my cousin how come it went that high since the unit's price is only US$119.
My cousin trooped back to Best Buy with a printed copy of the store's internet price and the store said that they charge a bit more in location stores.........However, they did credit my cousin back with some cash since they honor a price match guarantee ;)

The best part is.......I finally got it today!  ;D

Actually, I really dont understand the use of "congratulations" in cases like this because this is primarily an expense.   ;D.  Ganun pa man, salamat.   ;)  Sana may makita akong stock.

No torture test yet.  I havent even seen one. Im taking my chances based on Gaol's impressions, and feedback about the vastly improved playability of the original WDTV.   Calculated risk bale.   Must have feature kase ang component video out in my case para magamit kahit saang HDTV.  For sure, Id give everybody a shout whether this device is a real gem or otherwise.

How's your Xtreamer?  Im recommending that to my relatives.

"reasonable" expense considering my chronic addiction to watching movies (ever since I was around 10 years old).

How much are the prices of these media players in the EU and UK?

Are you watching the X Factor?   ;D

"reasonable" expense considering my chronic addiction to watching movies (ever since I was around 10 years old).

How much are the prices of these media players in the EU and UK?

Are you watching the X Factor?   ;D

for the Xtreamer po when i checked the net, the price was 99 uk pounds. This includes the wifi adapter.
i think same price as what is offered here in our marketplace?

sa Youtube ko lang napanood sir ung X factor  ;D i think ginaya ito ng channel 2? ung showtime? hehehe.. ;D

Question lang po sa mga may WD HD TV live, does it support Bittorent connectivity? Im planning to get an NMT this month, and it would be mainly used for downloading torrents. I have been browsing the net for this particular feature of WD HD TV live but no avail. Any insights would be greatly appreciated  :)

Hi TomGoots, no network problems with my Live and a MacBook Pro. What's your OS? Try checking out the WDTV Live threads in the avsforum...

No problem Gaol. ;)

I got the remaining unit at Listen Up Glorietta.  But sold it the next day coz I preferred to keep my Xtreamer instead.  Even I was surprised that the Xtreamer was the keeper, coz lots of people have been selling their Xtreamer for the WDTV Live.  Oh well, personal choices :)

Reasons I didn't keep the WDTV Live:

- Price.  It was already more expensive to begin with, but I still need to spend a couple thousands more for a compatible 802.11N dongle (or find a cheap one that works even if it's not officially supported/tested by WD).
- Features.  The Xtreamer may be too techie, but it delivers more features that I personally need in the house (internal HDD, server features, volume control, more functional remote, nice packaged wi-fi antenna that doesn't stick out to the back like a dongle does, straightforward RCA connectors for audio instead of the AV connector in the Live, etc etc).

As you said, to each his own, depending on one's personal "checklist."  ;D

I brought both my WDTV Live and Xtreamer to a get-together of friends without really telling them my preferences. One of them already bought the Live, while another friend is considering the xtreamer.

Dun sa mga naghahanap pa rin nito at wala pang stock na makita sa malls, try nyo itong 2 possible sources na ito:

1.  Listening Room (or yung Listen Up branch nila sa Glorietta)
2.  TipidPC sellers (I think SoftBox has stocks now)

Although I think throughout this month dadami na ang available units nito sa mga computer stores sa malls.

Kahit pa binenta ko agad yung Live ko, I still believe it's a great media player, with one of the most polished GUI among all NMTs available today.  At ang ganda ng PQ at 1080p/60 with Deep Color ON.  Sana maging ganito rin ka-polished ang GUI ng Xtreamer, Cinematube, etc. in the next few months... we'll see. :)

was finally able to buy an affordable USB wifi network adapter - Buffalo WLI- UC-GN model from Octagon Megamall. 1200 pesos. not bad considering the Linksys models are at least double the price.

world's smallest wifi 802.11n adapter as claimed by manufacturer.

it's one of the compatible adapters listed in the WD website. tried it with youtube and live365. save for some buffering issues with youtube, it streamed quite well. flawless with internet radio.

hope this helps those who are looking for a cheap wifi dongle. other compatible dongles available at megamall cyberzone were:

D-Link    DWA-125 (Php 1400)
D-Link    DWA-140 (Php 2700)
Linksys   WUSB100 (Php 2400 to 2700)

I do recall some discussion regarding the use of either powered/non-powered usb hubs before - but cant seem to find it in the NMT threads. So my apologies, if this seems like a double posting.

Naturally, I am envisioning a third HDD and since our WD LIVE could only take 2, a usb hub would be a cheaper alternative to add more.
However, it seems both powered/non-powered hubs have been used with hit & miss results, so I was wondering if these hubs have something to do with either the brand of the NMT player or the brand of the HDD as well.

So, have anyone used a usb hub to both WD LIVE & WD HDD with success? What brand, where to buy & how much?

TIA ;)

Is your wdtv under warranty? if yes go here-->http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php. If it is no longer covered try universal remote like logitec harmony but the price is almost wdtv cost.

I think even if the wdtv is still under warranty, loss of remote is not covered.

There is someone in ebay selling wdtv remotes for $15. But I'm not sure if he will agree to shipping to the Philippines.

http://cgi.ebay.com/WDTV-Remote-WDTV001RNN-Works-with-WDTV-Live-Mini-NEW_W0QQitemZ130369236346QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item1e5a9cad7a#ht_500wt_1052 (http://cgi.ebay.com/WDTV-Remote-WDTV001RNN-Works-with-WDTV-Live-Mini-NEW_W0QQitemZ130369236346QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item1e5a9cad7a#ht_500wt_1052)

Buying a harmony remote is also a good idea even if costly, since aside from the WDTV you get to control other devices such as your tv, dvd player, avr etc.

@Clondalkin - Basically sir more on movies ang balak ko...ngwoworry lang if it can smoothly play high bitrate HD movies..yung mga 40-50GB movies..kayanin kaya ng Xtreamer to?sa internet naman..maybe some radio stations and a little of youtube videos..thats it!!

I think both will be OK in terms of playback.

BTW, those 40-50GB pure BD rips are much lighter on a media player/streamer than those high bit rate 1080p MKV.  I guarantee you.  It seems the compression to MKV is adding a lot of  burden to playback because the device needs to decode the file first, whereas, if it's a pure BD rip, "derecho" playback.  Well tested ko na eto sa Egreat 31B and Mede8er and maganda talaga ang IQ/PQ if it's pure BD rip.  The Mede8er even supports subtitles for pure BD rips.   But, and there is a but, the main issue is, can your player at least downmix DTSMA/HD or TrueHD?  If it can pass-through these HD audio variants then even better -dito magaling ang Egreat 31B naman.

So here are your considerations:

Realtek based players:   No HD audio passthrough yet (puro unfulfilled promises palang and walang linaw if this will ever happen sa current gen players).  Likely capable of DTSMA/HD downmix to DTS, but probably not capable of anything with regard to TrueHD.

Sigma based players:  More likely capable of HD audio passthrough because older gen players like PCH and Egreat are capable of this nga.  Should be able to dowmix DTSMA/HD and TrueHD as well.  Hence, the WDTV Live might be the better device on this regard, or the one that has better potential.

As for secondary functions and features of NMTs, I'd rather not comment too much except to say that the PC is so much better and reliable still.

Wag ganun... a newer chip doesn't make a product automatically superior.  Neither does sexiness. :D

Both has pros and cons, and it's really up to what the buyer needs in a media player.  And as said above, there are already many discussions about these two players and how they compare, so those threads would be helpful.

Yup...

pero BD folder format dapat (not MKV muxed with HD Audio) same as A-200/C-200. It won't play DVD/BD Menus though maski pa ISO ang format.

I now realize where all the hullabaloo about HD Audio started.

MKV/MP4 didn't officially support HD audio streams sa container but apparently that didn't stop enthusiasts from creating their own encodes and getting them to work (Sigma 863x based players).

Since it wasn't officially supported by MKV in the first place, there was no guarantee it would work when newer generation of players came out which is why there's so much noise from users who upgrade media players finding their old "unofficial" encodes no longer worked.

Now that new Sigma based players are using 864x/865x, you won't be able to play HD Audio muxed in with MKVs using tsMuxer/Mkvmerge. You have to rip your content to ISO or BD folders (m2ts).

So if one really wants to keep around content muxed the unofficial way, best to keep your Sigma 863x based players around.

We'll have to wait for Realtek 1073+ or 1873+ based players to see if they will play MKV muxed with HD Audio.

May problem ba talaga eto?  I have some new 1080p Framestor encodes with DTS-HD/MA.  That's the signature of that encoding group.  I'd try them when I get to touch the Mede8er again in a few weeks.

But teka muna, when I was in Manila last Xmas, I tried Cujo 720p mkv with DTS-MA and the Mede8er successfully played that - sound was downmixed to DTS though - my HTPCs were all dumb on that file...completely silent.

That's core audio ata po...

Even sa xtreamer ko I remember I could get that to work. What people wanted was to get HD Audio recognized sa AVR.
Title: Re: WDTV LIVE / WDTV2 Media Player
Post by: Clondalkin on Mar 02, 2010 at 02:27 PM
What Im saying is that the Mede8er can output sound whether it be from pure BD rips (m2ts) or MKV as long as it's not Dolby TrueHD.  But my AVR recognizes it only as DTS. (yeah it could be the 1500kbps DTS core audio or some kind of downmixing of the 4500kbps HD audio  - my Yamaha 757 is not HD compliant in the 1st place) - sound quality is pretty awesome though.

Is this better than xtream?
It's better than xtreamer with regards to fast detection of attached drive, better navigation/gui/interface, firmware flexibility and has passive cooling, so it's completely silent.
Personally I do not like internal hdds for nmts because it means it will require fan, thus added noise.
The only drawback for wdtv live is that I cannot attach more than 2 hdds, and using usb hub is no go(but from my googling this can be done thru custom firmware update).
But of course there are some features present in xtreamer that you may find better and cannot be found on wd. Best is to audition it yourself.  :D

May I ask for help, please?

Does WDTV Live have problems playing .m2ts files? My officemate bought last week a WDTV Live from Greenhills.

He tried playing 2 BD ripped m2ts movies, one was 15 GB in size and the other 12 GB. The movies would play well for 2 to 3 minutes and then it would start to be quirky as the movements on the screen would slow down for a minute or so, then resume normal playing for another two minutes and then starts to be quirky again.

We played the movies on another media player, supposedly an older one but different brand, and the movies played without any problems.

The firmware on the WDTV Live was updated to 1.01.24 upon connection to the Internet and there was no problem with that.

This is very disappointing considering that the WDTV Live has a newer and faster processor.

Maybe someone have the answer to this?

Just an update...

I told my colleague to sell the WDTV Live and go for a second hand WDTV 1 because as per personal experience in the past I had no problems with the WDTV1 before and it played everything. Who needs the network port anyway if you won't be using it for downloading or accessing media over the network. All his movies are on the disk and unlike most of us here, he does not tinker with the media player but only wants a device that can play movie files.

As he was disappointed with the WDTV Live (...and I was embarrassed for suggesting it as one of the options for NMTs) he eventually agreed to go for a cheaper second hand WDTV 1.

I never used the WD TV LIVE but did a lot of work with the WDTV1, you could make it network capable also with the right adapters and software.

Never had a problem with it, hard to brick and if you can see the GUI mods that they have done with it, you will be amazed by the rich interface that you can achieve (very near into having an XBMC interface)

There's some doubt that model will be imported here because it's the same as the WD TV Live except for the addition of some features allowing you to purchase/rent content online.

Unfortunately, most of those services only work in North America (Netflix) so that model is specific to the U.S. market.

The ability to play DVD/BD Menus require chips with built-in DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Even if you can update your Live's firmware with one from the Live Plus, without the proper Sigma chip, it will not work exactly like a Live Plus.

The workaround probably is to RIP your Retail DVD to strip it of DRM so that the Live (using Live Plus) firmware can play DVD menus.

Even though technically BD Menus are said to work, I wouldn't count on it. Early BDs may probably play but new ones with Java menus won't kahit anong gawin mo.

mp4 is much smaller in files and the sound is much lower compared to the mkvs...

jungie,

checked sa amazon.com, yun buffalo wli-ul-gcn something pinaka madami users paired with wdtv live kaya yun ang binili ko.  as reported nag connect agad sa wrt320n.  bought sa silicon valley sm marikina.

but may performance lag (kaya ko gusto mag tplink 821n because cheapest na 300mps speed pero wala ako makita sa lowest price na willing ko i-bayad) pag playing mp4 and mkv greater than 7gb, mga 1080p files.  parang nag bbuffer or something kaya kailangan rewind mo ng kaunti then resume play.  about every 20-30mins na uulit ito.  youtube speed plays like sa pc.

yun price difference ng buffalo 150mpbs vs. yun tplink 821n, pwde na ako mag experiment gamit cdrking wifi-n usb adapter.  php600 lang 300mbps na pero questionable durability.  wdtv live daw prefers ralink chipset pero may mga realtek based (re8188 ata) adapters nag work.  sana mag work sya sa wdtv.  one of these days dalhin ko sa cdrking wdtv,  kung mag light up adapter mas malaki chance na mag work sya  better kung may monitor para makita mo talaga kung working/looking for networks.

Hi Guys,
I'm using a WDTV LIVE plugged into a Dlink gigabit router that has my dlink dns 323 NAS plugged into it as well.

My prob is that .mkv video playback (720p) movies, are stuttering from time to time. It's really getting very annoying  >:( >:( >:( since the movie playback stutters so bad that i have to rewind or fast-forward and rewind again to that particular scene that hanged.

I already tried accessing the NAS on wdtv live as a NETWORK SHARE and not the Media server option which did solve the problem but then the stuttering came up again a few days ago.

Hope the gurus here can help me on this, Thanks in advance :)

I'm using CAT6 data LAN cables, firmware 1.08 on DNS, not sure of the firmware on my wdtv live thou...

Another tip for WDLXTV Live (B-rad.cc Custom Firmware) users:

Create an empty txt file on the root of your primary usb drive and rename it "video_resume_point_table".

Now you'll have a persistent resume even after you turn off your wdtv live completely! ;D

This only works from v0.4.2.1 of B-rad's WDTV Live custom firmware onwards

I have also a WD TV Live. I bought it from JBL at Fort. Yung optical cable di maalis sa Unit.  I use this with my Polk Soundbar 360.

Eto yung problema

1. Optical cable stuck sa unit
2. Audio from movies is intermittent. Minsan meron, minsan wala.
3. RCA output is not working - audio part. so i really need to use the optical cable.

Sabi nang JBL meron daw talagang di kaya output yung audio. Kesyo kailangan daw magandang optic cable etc. Anyway i sent it to them 1 week na wala pa ako feedback. I am giving them some leeway kasi okay naman kausap. Ang nakaka asar lang - eto parati ang salita - WE CANNOT PROMISE ANYTHING BUT WE WOULD HELP!!! - hanep sa customer service. To think na under warranty pa yung unit. I bought it a month ago. Kaya nga may warranty - IT IS AN IMPLICIT PROMISE to FIX andy defects. IT IS A RESPONSIBILITY AND LIABILITY OF THE Seller.

OT na yata ako....anyway yung pag adjust nang settings just use the remote and nasa screen naman. You need to scroll down and look for it. Same icon naman yung settings parang geared wheel...
Hope this helps...

jo, if your wdtvlive plays all the files you have, and no issues whatsoever, better stick with the orig firmware... but if you experienced playing files with no video(only audio is playing) wait for the new firmware or update yours with the brad custom firmware(pls google). Minsan nga nagiging sluggish pa yung nmt after firmware update at mas marami pa nagiging issues.

the firmware itself comes from wd but sometimes hindi perfect ang pagkagawa kaya may mga features sa wdtv live na naaapektuhan. But you can also try new firmwares as long as you know how to revert back to the old and stable firmware if something go wrong with the unit.

Sa network shares hindi na readily accessible mga files parang nag hahang (that circling thing).  so i unchecked the "auto log-in" sa network settings  ok naman just added a couple of button presses ok'ing the saved password.

sa Media server naman accessible agad no changes, hindi ko lang ma update yun list sa Win7 video libraries kahit na ka link na sa working folder ko.

AT meron na pala Mediafly, curios kaya nag sign up ako.  So far mga online videos on topics you choose ang na discover ko.

ok thanks! dapat pala backup ko muna original firmware or download from WD.

cheers!

Got a few questions re audio/video settings.

I use an LG 1080p plasma. The WDTV Live's video output I set to hdmi 1080p. Then I have to choose auto or 23.976hz or 24hz or 50hz or 60hz. What about color space choices? auto or rgb high or rgb low or YCbCr?

HDMI deep color mode choices are 12 bit or 8 bit.

What do those choices mean & which would be best for a 1080p plasma?

Considering I just used the component connection,

colors are vibrant, and the images are sharp,

Sir Simonzaide gave all the points that you have to consider for this unit,
at first I wasn't that keen in getting a media player,
all I wanted was to somehow be able to watch some video clips
from the web on my current system, got tired of burning DVDs
and playing it sa DVD player ko, I was looking for a media player
that wasn't too heavy on the pocket, and a player na walang built in hard drive,
less parts, less prone na may masisira, I'd rather have an external drive na nakakabit
sa kanya, then I did asked first sa mga kaibigan ko kung ano ang mga gamit nila,
most of them uses Popcorn Hour, but was really pricey, and the next on the list is this unit,
followed by the Egreat, I chose the WD mainly because of its support, napansin ko kasi
na ang daming complains sa ibang brands, may mga hindi na mai-upgrade or downgrade
ang mga firmwares nila, so I decided to get this unit...

Too bad walang stock si Vic (S&S) nung naghahanap ako ng unit, he has the best priced
unit, 5200 for the WD TV Live, kay Listening Room ako nakakuha at 5400, I hate waiting kaya
kinuha ko na yun... A good friend told me na once na makakuha ka ng WD media player, hindi mo na mahahawakan ang mga DVD player mo, he was right, even my mp3s sounds really good, (used the optical connection), though I must warn you, having a media player is really addicting, at first sabi ko sapat na ang 500GB ko na external, pero ng makita ko ang PQ and AQ ng mga movies, I WANT MORE,...
I want to see most of my favorite movies inside this media player, kaya I am poised to get an external WD 1TB my Book,..

What I love about this gadget is its convenience, just think, in a BD or DVD, you'd have to replace the disc kung hindi mo gusto ang pinapanuod mo, wherein sa media player, you'll just have to use the remote, dang, ginagawang tamad ng technology talaga ang mga tao, hehehe....

cheers and happy viewing,..!

8GB~10GB is too small a file.

That's probably lower bitrate file just packaged into a ISO.

A real BD ISO would hit between 25~50GB.

Easy lang yan sir.  Just get a picture from the web, then give it the same name as the movie file, except that the file extension should be "jpg".

For example, if you have a movie named "Inception.mkv", google "inception film wiki", go to the wikipedia site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inception_(film) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inception_(film))

Right click on the picture, click "Copy", paste it on the WD's hard disc, rename the picture file as "Inception.jpg", and that's it.

I recommend the movie poster rather than the DVD/BD cover.  The dimensions of the movie poster are more compatible with the thumbnail.  The DVD/BD cover is shorter; it's not going to look too good.

Title: Re: WDTV LIVE / WDTV2 Media Player
Post by: barrister on Feb 19, 2011 at 10:23 PM
You'll have to update the firmware.

For the Gen. 1 version, the original firmware (version 1.00.01) did not have thumbnail support.  The capability was only added on firmware 1.02.00 (April 1, 2009), so you would not be able to show thumbnail pictures if your firmware is older than 1.02.00.

The latest firmware for Gen. 1 is version 1.03.01 (Nov. 9, 2009).

Don't worry.  The procedure works on both models.

My first WD TV was the Gen. 1, purchased in November 2008, the month when it was first released; my 2nd WD TV is a WD TV Live, purchased 2 days ago.  I've done it on both, and it works on both.

Title: Re: WDTV LIVE / WDTV2 Media Player

Pardon my ignorance sir but how do you upgrade the firmware. It's now 1.01.02.
Title: Re: WDTV LIVE / WDTV2 Media Player
Post by: barrister on Feb 20, 2011 at 12:20 PM
First, make sure you know which WD TV version you have.  Gen. 1 is model WDAVN00; Gen. 2 is model WDBABF0000NBK.  I think the model number is printed on a sticker on the box.

It's confusing because most WD TV owners also refer to the WD TV Live as "Gen. 2".

But in reality, WD TV Live has a non-gloss gray body, while Gen. 2 has a gloss black body, exactly the same as the Gen. 1.  Both the Gen. 1 and the Gen. 2 have no networking capabilities.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD_TV#Models

At any rate, if your current firmware is 1.01.02, then we can safely presume that you have a Gen. 1 model, since firmware version 1.01.02 is for the Gen. 1 model.

If you have the Gen. 1, go to this page: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/

Firmware update instructions are found on the bottom of the page.

Also read the release notes:  http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/releasenotes/WDTVreleasenotes103.pdf (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/wdtv/releasenotes/WDTVreleasenotes103.pdf)

An important update that you don't have yet is the usb auto spin-down capability (v. 1.02.07).  The hard drive should spin down after about 10 mins. from power-off.  If you can feel the drive vibrating when you touch it, then it's still spinning.

Its really somewhat tedious sir,
and sometimes the WD won't even show the image,
what I did was I always put 2 or 3 jpeg files in its folder
para sya na ang bahala kung alin ang ipo-post nya,
I am just starting my collection, kaya medyo naiaayos ko pa.
Starting with 150 movies, and slowly growing,...

http://www.wdtvlive.com/articles/view/10/Did_you_know_Quick_WD_TV_tips

Did you know? Quick WD TV tips

10 minute skip
Press Fast Forward/Reverse on the remote then Next/Prev to skip forwards or backwards 10 minutes at a time.

Play multiple files in a row
Instead of pressing the Enter button while a file is selected, you can press the Play button to play all of the files in the current folder sequentially, beginning with the currently selected file.

Use multiple external subtitles with the same video
If you have a file named video.avi, you can add subtitle files named video.srt to view subtitles. However, if you have multiple subtitle files, you can still use them: If you had an English subtitle file and a Spanish subtitle file, you could name them video.en.srt and video.es.srt and they would both be available during playback of the video. This also works for other subtitle formats, such as SMI, SSA, SUB, or IDX.

Info bar toggle
You can quickly toggle the info bar on and off during video playback by pressing Enter on the remote.

How to use MKV chapters
During video playback, if an MKV being played has chapters, press the Option button and select the rightmost icon (the one that has a bunch of litle squares) in the options menu. You can then choose a chapter to play.

Page up/page down in file browsing
While browsing through files, press Next or Prev on the remote to page up/page down.

Subtitle sync adjustment
During video playback, press the left or right arrow keys on the remote to adjust subtitle synchronization by 100 ms at a time.

Thumbnails
If a folder contains an image named “folder.jpg”, that image will be used as the folder’s thumbnail.

If a jpg file is given the same filename as a media file, it will be used as the thumbnail for that file. For example, an image named “video.jpg” would be used as the thumbnail for a file named “video.avi”.

Hope these tips help!

i ended up buying this one, upon scrutiny of 2 other players,
1. the now famous kaiboer H1055, i have an LG TV  :'(
2. the measy, with worrysome sata connection issues

this is a very good upscaler, improving the PQ of a 1.4GB AVI file on a 32LCD, which was a bit degraded on fullscreen on a 22LCD using an HD4770.

didn't have difficulty displaying the thumbnail view of my files. so far so good

I tried using a single partition sana, kaya lang ayaw pumayag ng WD TV live,
so I had to divide it into 2 partition of 1.4gb each... I would advise you to research first kung kaya ang 4TB... Starting to transfer files now, tutulugan ko na ito at bukas na ang yari nito sigurado,...

I find the 4TB too expensive, the most i can probably get is a 2TB external pending sale of my internal drives

Also check out the sound quality of the WD TV Live when playing FLAC files,
hooked it up via optic on my Yamaha RXV657, centerstage comes alive,
vocals and instruments are very prominent,...

The only setback so far sa unit na ito is the fact na napapalaki na ako ng gastos sa kakabili
ng hard drive, kaya I opted to get the 3TB, it will fit ALL of my video library, FLACs and MP3s,
and still around 1.5TB to spare...  :D

If I will get another NMT, I wouldn't get any other brand...

sir Dowals
Consider retaining 1 or 2 hard drives as well, it pays to have a backup you know...

@ABC

congrats!

i also plan to purchase a 3tb, my 1tb got corrupted! x_x

It can still be detected by my WD TV Live, but whenever i plug it on my PC, it requires me to Reformat the Disc..... Fortunately, i found a system that could retrieve the files on the 1tb....although slow ung process since it is per File [around 5-8minutes each..]

have you tried playing a BD ISO on your player?

Nice post on the Did You Know Tips... Will print that one and put it beside the Player.

Does anybody used the B-Rad's custom firmware for WDTV Live? May lumabas na bagong fw kaya lang based pa rin sa 1.03.49 fw.

I would appreciate if you share your experience with these fw.

Hi sir,

My advise to you is get a 3TB via Amazon or Fry,
most of the hard drives sold here in the Philippines
is way over priced, the 3TB I got is only at $170 US,
therefore its roughly 7480 in pesos, price of the 2TB here,
just ask someone to bring it home na lang...

At first I was pretty frustrated kung paano ko ba kako
makikita ang isang particular scene without using the scan function,
coz 16x lang ang speed nya, buti na lang nabasa ko sa website nila
ang tips na yan, na may interval of 10 mins ang WD TV Live using the
FF and skip together...

The only BD ISO format na nasa library ko is at 4GB and 15GB yata,
and hindi ito ang full BD structure, it played flawlessly,
but I am pretty sure na hihikain ito kung full BD ISO talaga...

With the player's price, it has performed very well for me,
hindi mabigat sa bulsa ang presyo, I would get the same unit kung kukuha pa ako ulit ng isang NMT.

Cheers,...

Yup, i'll either have someone bring it here [If anyone is going home] or do the "I Buy You Choose" process that they have in PxB, additional cost [shipping is to be divided by the Group] would probably be around 1k [not bad].

btw,

Sir, may I ask what firmware version is installed in your unit,..?
I am using the stock ver. 1.02.21, and as far as I remember sa dami ng
files na nakuha ko ay 1 or 2 lang ang nagkaproblema sa playability,
naghanap lang ako ng ibang version nung file and ok na sya...

I did not upgrade my unit, in fear of crashing and other problems,
lahat ng files ko ay ok sa firmware na ito kaya hindi na ako nagtangkang mag-upgrade...

@boogie

Try to look for "MKVMerge" , it's a system that converts your files into MKV format.

I use this whenever i downloaded something that has problems playing on my Player [i.e No 5.1 Sound (only in stereo)].

HTH!

What file formats ang problematic sa player mo,...? mkv, avi, mp4,..?

Well, your best solution for now is to indeed upgrade the firmware of the player,
try searching the WD website as well, kung may mga problem na ganyan na nakapost duon,
its worth the shot...

Good luck sir,...

Forgot to add, you also need an "Audio Converter"..i forgot the name that i have on my PC, i'll try to check it tomorrow.

so what i do for Files which has no Audio [mostly non-MKV files]

1. Convert to MKV
2. Convert Audio to 5.1
3. Play & Enjoy! ^_^

audioconverter ata yun sir. Makuha yun sa popcorn hour na forum. Meron kasi ako WDTV Live, may problema yung AAC na audio format, walang audio kapag naka Digital ang config sa Live pero kaya sa Live to downmix to stereo pero pangit kasi pakinggan lalo na kung may receiver ka, i mean d mo ma maximize yung receiver mo.

Yeah, i think Audioconverter din name niya.. I believe there is an option there to convert it to 5.1, so far that's what i have been doing and no complaints from me. ^_^

although you can also downmix it to stereo, but i don't think that would be a good idea.hehe

At first akala ko malaki ang difference ng may PLUS sa WD TV Live,
maimamaximize ko lang pala yun kung nasa US ako,
so its almost useless here sa atin, if I would get another unit of NMT,
hindi ako magdadalawang isip na kumuha ulit ng WD TV Live...

Good for audio listening din talaga ang WDTV Live, lalo na with Vinyl-FLAC (24/96) files. Swabeng-swabe ang tunog kahit anong genre. 1:30am na ako natulog kanina listening to RATM, Miles Davis, Black Sabbath, Diana Krall, Eagles...

Set-up: WDTV Live --> Old Onkyo 502 receiver --> A-Audio Proac clone

Thanks bros ABC and Wally...

Now, here's the next problem I have...I've recently downgraded to a Technics mini component as my audio hardware for my room. It only has analog inputs (red&white RCAs) and packs only a Dolby Pro-Logic system...I know...bulok...(The GF doesn't like my "noise machines" inside our room, so put the AV in another room).

Compatibility issues? In the Mede8er thread I was told to use a DAC for compatibility.

Thanks again...mahina na ulo ko sa ganito. ;)

No, they don't sell WD remotes.

Marami sa Greenhills yan sir.

WD TV Live Hub is common and easy to find.  Kahit sa SM meron yan.  WD TV Live Gen 2 is also easy to find.

Ang mahirap hanapin ay ang WD TV Live Gen 3 (2011).

Depende sa requirements ng user yan.

If you just want a player, WD is more than enough.

But if you want a full-featured box, Mede8er ang mas maganda, para torrent client capable.

Anyone has problems with the WDTV live HDMI port? mine's not working anymore after just days of using. I don't know what happen, but I recall plugging the ethernet cable to copy movies from my laptop, while copying I also played movies from the WDTV live, could that possibly destroy the HDMI port? I'm now just using RCA cables.

anyone tried a powered usb hub to this player?  since it has limited usb ports (2), i worry that the ports will be subject to faster wear & tear as i almost interchange the HDDs everytime i use this player.

I currently have 4 HDDs sharing the two ports
1 x 1tb
2 x 1.5tb
1 x 2tb

sir, why don't you just purchase a short USB cable extender and attach that to your WDTV?

so that the wear & tear is only applicable to the cable..hehe..

just my suggestion... :)

You mean the WDTV Live (Gen. 2)?

Mahal pa, kasi the WDTV Live Streaming (Gen. 3) is only P4.8K in Greenhills V-Mall now, more or less.

When I got here in the US a few months ago, one of the very first gadget that I bought was a WD TV Live media player, I owned one back home, and up to now, it is still in perfect condition, sadly, the only available WD media player here is the newest version, the one with the USB port located at the front,
it did performed quite well, but somehow I feel its a tad slower in reading my external drives, compared to its predecessor, and the fact that I hate seeing a USB cable plugged at its face,...

I was about to ask my teens to bring my player back here from the Philippines, at pabalik naman sila next month, but I decided to seek out another one,....

Last Friday, I was able to get one via ebay, it is LIKE NEW indeed, everything was in pristine condition, and the good part is that I got it only for $50,... Now that's what I call I deal, set it up, tested it,
and it is just like my old player,...

Using the latest official firmware. No problems whatsoever.

Is this the 1.06.xx? Any significant difference from the previous FW? Am contemplating on doing a FW upgrade but if there's no significant improvement, I'd rather stick to the stock FW (1.05.xx). Haven't encountered any issues so far, only wishing the "PSP" looking GUI could be changed. ;D TIA!

Yung 2 WDTV Live na gamit ko (yung makapal) parehas hindi binabasa ang buong 3TB,

The firmware update is often time troublesome sir,
Like what I've experienced here, before then, basta nai-load na ng unit ang thumbnails ng bawat movie,
everytime na patayin mo na sya, and switch mo, nandun na ang mga thumbs, after the update,
parating iniloload ang thumbs, kaya ang bagal ng response ng unit, as well as frequent crashes
and playability ng mkv file. Akala ko nga nung una may problema ang access sa hard drive kasi ang tagal basahin, so I decided to call WD support here, and they were able to assist me quite well, BTW
puro call centers sa Pinas ang nakakausap ko ha, and talagang magagaling sa support ang mga kababayan natin,... They helped me revert back to the previous working firmware,...

I'd stay away sa firmware update, nadala na ako, kaya if the unit is performing quite well, like in my case, nakasaksak ang 2 hard drive na 3tb na nakapartition lang ng 1.5tb, well, then, that's ok with me,... Gusto ko sanang subukan ang 4tb partition sa 2tb sana, kaya lang wala akong mahiraman na hard drive dito, hehehe
I have a feeling na sagad sa 2tb ang kaya ng bawat USB port kasi,....

Tyempuhan sir,...
Minsan nagbabagsak ng $180 from its regular price na $220,...
Ilang araw ko na nga din inaayos ang network ko dito,
hindi ko mapagkita ang WD ko at PC, I want my WD to access my PC kasi,

Firmware upgrade resolved my 3TB issue, my Gen2 unit now can read a full 3TB My Book. However, there are minor issues, booting is a bit slower, thumbs reloads every time you reconnect a drive. these issues are tolerable by my standards as of now.

Firmware is 1.06.43_V

and this, which was not present before update

Yung thumb reload ang ayaw ko,
ang laki ng ibinabagal, also, may mga metathumb file pa syang idinadagdag minsan,
one reason why I revert back sa original firmware nya ay yung frequent crashes,
may mga mkv file syang ayaw basahin, na dati ay binabasa naman,
but if its working out well for you, good for you,...

Nagloko WDTV Live namin after a software update hanggang sa ayaw na niyang mag-on. We went to their authorized service center in Makati, but they only do replacements and not repair. And since padala yung unit namin from the US, di siya valid for replacement. Anyway, meron ba kayong alam na nag-re-repair ng wdtv's? The only solution I know for that is to revert the firmware, and to do that, you need to be on the phone
sa WD US, so your dilemma now is how to call them na lang, their tech support is really good, kadalasan ay naka-out source sa Pilipinas ang mga tech support nila.     1 (800) 275-4932

That happened to me before, but not to the point na hindi na sya umaandar, am pretty sure they will be able to help you out,... (main reason why I stopped updating it,..)
