Anybody out there who owns or have auditioned these speakers?
I got a chance to have a short audition on Harbeth bookshelf speakers
(forgot the model) last month and I thought they sounded
very open and airy (a common trait of most high end speakers but
rarely present in mid end speakers). They have a somewhat 'liquid'
midrange (good trait for some, not for others).
I also thought they have sweet highs untypical of speakers
with aluminum dome tweeters.
Owners of these speakers or those who have auditioned them,
do share your thoughts on these speakers...

I had a harbeth hl-p3es2 very nice midrange, just a little hard to drive at 84db

Philander, i believe a pre-owned harbeth is on display at architectural audio. don't know the model, though.

Where and How much did you acquire your Harbeth hl-P3ES-2?
Happened to audition this at Shanghai...IMHO better than the LS3 version
although agree very hard to drive... With A-B-C Test we did (A-stock version
B-Roger LS3 C- Special edition)
I prepare the special edition which per laopan only hundreds of units were produced with
serial number and certificate. This cost 13,200RMB = Php85,800. Is the price ok?

Yep, you got it right. I was able to audition a pre-owned Harbeth hl-P3ES-2. Vocal swere on the spot with a very balanced treble.

Why don't you call up Ferdie or PM him sa Wiredstate. Mabilis sumagot and madaling kausap. Ordered mine already, pero parang lay-away plan, kasi he does not stock up on Rosewood units. Deposit lang ako until fully paid sa kanya. . . Hope to get mine be late 2011.

A rosewood compact 7. Inorder ko na kasi puro cherry lang parating niya. Kung ganoon kamahal yung speaker mo might as well have it in the color you like.

once you go harbies, you never go back. This was my initial set up but eventually changed the marantz to leben and audio analogue cdp. Also got a stand for the harbies. go for it. you wont regret it.

Just my 2-cents...I have had a P3 before...perfect imaging, holographic...however you'll need a juicy amplifier...suggestion is hybrid (SS power amp w/ tube pre-amp)...you may need to integrate w/ a sub for the oooomph! I have listened to the Compact 7ES3...well balanced, warm w/ excellent imaging again (Harbeth's strength)...and the SHL-5...WOW!! But of course it has a higher price tag...If i were to choose...considering both price and sound...it will be the Cmopact 7 ES3 30th Anniversary Edition (w/ upgraded internal wiring/cabling)...with an 80wpc amplification, you'll never go wrong w/ this...

Question lang Jen, been reading details sa Harbeth thread, and it seems they say that the best items goes into every Harbeth and that the is no need for any part to be upgraded. What would the upgraded wiring do? wouldn't it change the Harbeth SQ?

thanks cjtjader. the leben is a better match detail and imaging wise. i listen mostly to vocals and it just brings out the best in the harbeths. the marantz sounded clinical and lacks warmth. It never really made the harbies disappear unlike the p3 leben combo. I guess the magic was just not there with the marantz.

i guess it depends on the solid state. I use an accuphase with the compact 7s and it sounded better than my p3 with the leben.

SO di na ako magpapalit ng amplification? Have Harman's HK990 - top dog in it's stereo line. 150wpc in 8ohms, 300wpc in 4 ohms. Pang P3 sana, pero as everyone has heard, mas swak talaga yung Compact 7. Nasira tuloy budget ko. . .

The Harbeth was one of the "I likes" during the Hifi show. I just didn't know which model was playing nor the price.

thanks Jen, i get a bigger soundstage and deeper imaging with the accuphase/compact 7 compared to the leben/ p3esr combo. And I have yet to try mixing the leben with the accuphase and switching the speakers. what i want to try is the 40.1 monitor harbeths, though. probably next year.

timber715, the room's ceiling is covered by two layers of gypsum board covered by acoustic panels with a one layer of foam. the acoustic panels for the walls are yet to be installed. even though its only half way done, the harbeths have no problem coming out well. Although it can be a bit "bassy" depending on the music being played, it has no problem playing vocals. before the wreck room was done. i have been playing the harbeths in a normal untreated room and it just sounded great. i think you can place it anywhere and it will sound as good as allan shaw designed it.

i use a leben cs300 xs (valve) amp to drive my p3esr and it sounds good as well. the music is more subdued and the highs just rolls off. i guess you can say it sounds more analogue than digital. I use an audio analogue paganini as my cdp.

Thanks Joey, this is still a long way to go ;D... it will have stretchers on all sides to keep everything secured and in place. as for the spikes, I plan to use metal balls or ball bearings since I don't want the speaker's veneer to be damaged... I have not yet decided if it should have spikes to contact the floor though...

they had room treatment bro na about 2"x2" lang na would change the sq like day and night... pero dapat nga malaki budget mo :( as it can cost more than the Harbeth I'm getting (a piece pa yun ha)... kaya nga dapat iba naging hobby ko eh ;D ;D ;D

The spikes are a must. It will only be installed at each foot of the speaker stand so no worries about the speakers' veneer. The spikes will prevent unwanted vibration from traveling from the floor to the stands then to the speakers. Also the spikes will also help drain out unwanted vibrations generated by the speakers and the stands.

yes they are very nice, but I believe that the new compact 7 (ES-3) are redesigned to be much easier than the previous models, 25 watts from an ss amp isn't so much come to think of it...

I use a 15 watt integrated amp and it drives my harbeths beautifully. Although the amp drives my p3esr, it should not have any problem driving the compacts since the 7s has a higher sensitivity than the p3s. And reading through the harbeth forum, you will get the idea that its one of the easiest speaker to drive.

Initial listening is very promising on the HarHar combo. Hintayin nating ma-break in para mas maganda. Will try spinning LPs later tonight. . .

Muy, if you can, consider putting more space between the 2 speakers to expand the soundstage.

ako I was initially not impressed coming from the CDM1 first 10 minutes showed only minor improvements. but after that the difference started stretching out (must be the break-in method ;D). and with speaker placement tweaking, it was apparent that this speakers belong to a different class. details, details and more details ;D. the low frequencies initially gave me a heartburn ;D ;D ;D, had to move them further from the wall in my small room. and with the soundstage, I don't know the correct words to descried it, but singers appear in front of me, even a whole band for that matter (makes me think how they fit in my room ;D). I can hear Rod Stewart change distance from his microphone and other similar sounds I never noticed with the cd's I have for a long while now.
The C7's truly are very natural and very musical not to mention very pretty too. Like I said earlier, you cannot go wrong with them or any Harbeth for that matter.
I have always referenced the sq of a system from Fr. Jim's audio set and to my ears, I can now reference from what I have ::) ::) ::) of course that is my opinion ;)

Thanks Muy, I wanted the rosewood brader without a doubt, but the extra cost wasn't worth it for me, had to eat sardines to have these for three months. and if I chose rosewood, it would increase another month or so :P. No while we were trying to decide, swmbo (she who must be obeyed aka wifey) said we wanted to hear music and not stare at the beautiful furniture ;D so saving a bit for future upgrade it becomes. while I stare at your speakers, it makes me want them a lot, but I am very happy with what I got... very very happy as a matter of fact ;) ;D ;D ;D

It's when you get to rock n' roll listening volumes where iwan na yung Cayin. The punch and control of the E460 is wonderful at elevated volumes. Drum whacks are just so tight and impactful. Actually, the reason I went back to solid state is miss ko a system that can rock. But for all that, the forte of the Accuphase/Harbeth is still vocals. Karen Carpenter sounds just so excellent. So best of both worlds. Haven't tried orchestra yet.
My sources are now the glaring weak points on my setup. Hope to fix that with a cart upgrade and the addition of a DAC. :)

they sound great so far, but I need the Harbeth representative to be the judge of it... I did not place spikes since I was afraid damage the veneer... used cylindrical hardwood blocks instead and they sound much better than rubber... will pm you price later.

I got the privilege of listening to them yesterday. They sound WOW, the imaging is simply amazing, the details are astounding. The bass is still a little boomy, maybe need room acoustics pa.
Also, the free audition includes free lunch even. :D

Actually, my set-up is with the Naim Audio (Nait5i/ CD5i-2/ Hiline/Powerline & NACA5). The last photo is when we had an EB with Friends in Bacolod, but unfortunately as it was raining that time, the speakers got stuck inside the car and we did'nt have any more time to test the Harbeths with the Macs but only with the Cayin A88T. The room is already very crowded and transfering to another system is very difficult and complicated. Maybe next time na lang.
Anyway, I was only interested to try them on the more affordable Cayin that the out-of-reach Macs,for me. Hehe. With the Cayin, it was very nice but a little laid-back and a different presentation compared to my Naims.
BTW, the Mac owner is very decided to get a pair of Harbeths, maybe a SHL5, for his Macintosh. With the Cayin only, I think he's already pleased and convinced.

Still breaking in my Compact 7s, since I hardly get to play them during the day. Sa gabi lang.
Mahirap dito naiwanan yung system ko ng Harbeths. . .
Upgraded the system as well, using a second hand Audible Illusions Modulus 2B tube preamp and the power sector of my HK990 as the power amp. Maganda nga yung tube preamp and SS power amp combo. Best of both worlds. Bumilog yung tunog, pero andoon pa rin yung bass definition ng solid state.
Waiting for the incoming Rega DAC to complete the setup to make the sources naman at par with the Harbeths. Yung ampli section good as done na for the Harbeths.

All gears in this picture belong to only one guy, except the Harbeths, which I brought along for the session. 3 set-ups in one setting. 2 Mac systems, 1 is tubed Pre/power to the Paradigms and 1 solid state to the B&W 805s. Kulang ang buong hapon namin dun. >:(

I am from Bacolod, currently abroad for work. Lately, on vacation, we had Sunday group listening sessions there. We have accumulated a good number of audiophiles or friends in audio.
That's one thing I will be missing here.

Before here in Saudi, I kept them "on" all the time which is a big difference. At home now, it is most of the time "off" as I'm here now abroad. It really takes too long to warm it-up, you won't even feel it by touching. ::) ???

Yeah. I really liked them with the Harbeths.
My only dilemma now is the listening room acoustics, that's why we're building a dedicated room for them to maximize their potentials. It would take some time though as I'm still out of the country.
Will post photos soon once the room is done so that maybe I can get some help on set-up & room treaments.

Ok din yung supernait. Di mo kailangan ng outboard DAC since may DAC na sa loob. Plus the signature Naim sound. . . Was shooting for that as well, pero the large diff with the HK990 was the decider. Getting a Rega DAC, which some reviews say is just as good as the NAIM Dac, but significantly cheaper.
Let's see how my Harbeth setup sounds with the Rega DAC. . .
Nakakalula lang yung e-460 ni sir Lithium. . . asked Ferds the price and was floored. . . kahit yung e-250 ginto din. :'(

I wanted the Naim DAC but it's twice the price of the Bel Canto. I heard the Supernait and the Naim DAC playing off a Macbook at the last Hi-Fi show and the sound left nothing to be desired - PRAT galore. The Supernait's built-in DAC doesn't compare to the Naim DAC. Pero magastos din yung Naim courtesy of their various PSU upgrades which you will need to get the most out of Naim components. Plus the operating idiosyncrasy (always on) described above is the reason why I went to Accuphase instead. But sound-wise I'd have been perfectly happy with Naim.

The Supernait's built-in DAC doesn't compare to the Naim DAC. Pero magastos din yung Naim courtesy of their various PSU upgrades which you will need to get the most out of Naim components. Plus the operating idiosyncrasy (always on) described above is the reason why I went to Accuphase instead. But sound-wise I'd have been perfectly happy with Naim.

Maganda nga Naim, prices though are too rich for me. The Nait 5 is reachable, but Almost 2x the price of an amp with similar power output.

Di naman my sources came from elsewhere. Ferdie supplied most of the rest. What can I say, Ferdie is the man if you are serious about getting the sound right or tailored to your taste. And of course brother Sonny built the beautiful rack.

That gave me a little dilemma actually. Had to choose which component faced front - the Shunyata Hydra or the Artemis. Can't be both due to cable length. In the end it had to be the Shunyata that gives way because with 5 thick power cords angled at 90 degrees imparting a lateral force, the rollerblocks beneath won't "float" the Shunyata freely, negating the decoupling effect. I even put more weight on top of the Hydra and the Artemis, mass loading them so to speak, to reduce the influence of the "bent" power and interconnect cables on them, thus enabling the rollerblocks to function as intended. Mind you, these Symposium Rollerblocks, especially the Series 2 beneath the Artemis really work. Their effect is immediately noticeable. :).

Waiting for the Rega DAC myself to complete my digital front end. Saka na muna yung analog. Cheap P-mount Technics (pero naka Grado Green) muna until I get a proper music room for myself. . .

Are those 300B tubes you are driving them with? Alan Shaw mentioned his speakers can sound great with just 8-wpc of SET power. The Manley, is that an integrated amp?

lithium - yes, it's an 8 watt 300B SET amp. Instrument solos and vocals are magical when I use this with the Harbeths. The Manley Stingray is a 40 watt integrated amp designed by Eva Manley. Uses an EL84 output stage in Ultra Linear push-pull mode.
My preamp is the one below the Manley - it's an Audible Illusions Modulus 3A. I connect my DAC and iPod transport (not in the picture) to this via cjtjader's interconnects and in turn connect to the Manley.

Actually, wanted an Accuphase, but the cheapest Accuphase is almost 75% more expensive vs a brand new L-550 A II, which is what I have. And some test reports show the L-550 to be more than a match for the even more expensive Accuphase E-550 na ka-match niya.
To be fair, I asked Ferds (the Harbeth/Accuphase/Bel Canto/Peachtree distributor) if he still had Luxman in his stable. Di na daw, so I looked for other sources. . . ;D
Banat na bro timber. The Lux sounds very good partnered with the Compact 7. IMHO, superior to the setup that Ferds had in his setup last year sa HiFi show, where he used the entry level Luxman, the L-505U. Medyo Class A yung Luxmn ko, kaya medyo mainit tumakbo. After 2 hours of use, kaya niyang painitin yung extra heavy duty na transformer na binili ko kay boss Edrel. You're welcome to have a listen to the Lux-Harbeth combo. . . ;)
This year all Accuphase na siya, so it will be an interesting listen. . .

A suggestion...I've had these speakers before...suggested height of stands is 26.5inches...also, for maximum bass, try to have stands custom-made by turbokiller w/ 4 pillars (sand-fillable). Upper plate w/ exact same dimensions as speakers. Enjoy!

A suggestion...I've had these speakers before...suggested height of stands is 26.5inches...also, for maximum bass, try to have stands custom-made by turbokiller w/ 4 pillars (sand-fillable). Upper plate w/ exact same dimensions as speakers. Enjoy!

REL subs match up well with Harbeths. My previous sealed Anthony Audio sub came very close, but in the end I preferred the sound of my Compact 7s without a sub.

Pang demo ni Ferdie palagi yung combo na yan pag Hi Fi show....Harbeth and REL Acoustics. I remember before there were a lot of listeners including myself intently listening to the Harbeth/Accuphase combo then he repeated the track that was playing this time with the REL located in the middle of the room of all places for reinforcement. Parang naging floorstanders yung small Harbeths bigla. Lumawak yung soundstage lalo. The smallest Harbeth with the smallest REL...killer combo na agad. Yun lang lampas 100K agad speaker and sub pa lang.

I bet the sound character will be exactly the same. It's details like room acoustics, tweaks, source media, cabling etc. that will likely differentiate the sound. :)

I agree. Coming from a peachtree nova 125 the difference is night and day even though I'm just using HRT streamer II DAC. Very contented and happy with the Accuphase. Didn't even replaced the stock power cord coz I've found it smoother than my previous power cord. :)

What center channel are you using sir?
SHL5 is good w/ movies too. I tried setting it at full range and I get extra boom in the mid-bass. Sarap sa gun-fight scenes, magic that an 8 incher does.

For the moment i'm just using a 1,500 watt-AVR and just closely monitor the power surges. Will upgrade on this soon.

Was somewhat expecting it to be a bit congested with the small room but it's not. No sign of boominess (which is good) must be due to the ASC's... Sings very well but I think it still needs tweaking here and there especially the placements.... All in all I am very happy. I do think the c7's have a slightly different voice than the 5' and 3's but they all sing very well...
Also I think it is easier to set up the 5's than the 7's. it could be just me....

So far I find fluidity when the lightspeed is connected... Preamps like any gear on a system seem to impart something to the overall sound (I think)... Like warmth, brightness, a better soundstage or could degrade it too. The hard part is finding one that matches well with one's system.
I do long for the fluid sound that comes from the accuphase e_60 series... Its just beyond my reach kasi....... So close and yet a universe away :-[ haaaaaaay
But life is good and we must be happy with what we are blessed with O0 O0 ^-^

While you are saving for the e_60 ...... why not try placing a tubed buffer (SS ok din like Pass' Mesmerize) before and after the lightspeed ..... you may be in for a surprise ;)

Nasa cebu ang distributor ng harbeth and showroom. Nandun din ang best sounding that I know. You can inquire sa sounds and images (cebu) and look for Ferdie Ludo. Hes a very nice guy.

Nasa cebu ang distributor ng harbeth and showroom. Nandun din ang best sounding that I know. You can inquire sa sounds and images (cebu) and look for Ferdie Ludo. Hes a very nice guy.
Last I checked the shl5 is going for 300k (more or less kasi nag price increase on all models)...

Most harbeth model uses seas tweeter, but not the ones sold by SEAS. They have their own design custom made by seas for harbeth only...

Yes. SEAS actually started as a contractor for manufacturing ng drivers. Year 2000 lang ata sila gumawa ng sarili nilang product.

And as far as I am aware, not only are the materials a proprietary mix of their chemicals, the process itself is proprietary. The cones are thicker near the voice coil and thins out nearing the outer portion of the speakers. This is what makes harbeth speakers special...
Yung crossover madali. Magbukas ka lang ng harbeth available ang parts at kaya gayahin. But without the drivers, the crossover is useless since it was designed for the drivers.
Di ba yung enclosure ng harbeth, thin wall? Dapat ba manipis ang enclosure pag thin wall? :o ;D ;D ;D
For those who are not aware, the thin walled speakers such as the harbeths and rogers give extra voice from their enclosure. That is one reason why wooden musical instruments sound very natural on these speakers. The somehow replicate the wooden vibrations created by the wooden instruments such as a guitar, a piano, violin and so much more....

You are correct, they can issue a replacement for you if you can provide them proof of ownership. Magkano daw yung driver brader? Again you are correct that they do provide matching for their units, hence the serial xxxxxL and xxxxxR. Also, as far as I know, before they issue a replacement driver, they will ask you to open the voice coil to check the cause of damage. So even if you have the original driver it will be difficult if not impossible to repair to the original standard.

In my experience, stands play a major part in the sound of the SHL5. Thicker and heavier stands tend to accentuate bass more than thinner stands.
A small room would therefore benefit from thinner stands.

As the designer, Alan Shaw, explained, “The drive units are so well balanced in their acoustic performance that I never even considered a fruitless search for trendy, eye-catching alternatives. Boss Nolax, not much difference I guess...I remember those who bought the M30 were given a chance to "convert" to M30.1 with some internal tweaking but warranty not void...though not in PH...the only major difference is the Radial 2.
Honestly, I am quite disappointed as I have sent an e-mail and PM to Alan Shaw via Harbeth Forum probably around 3-months ago. I was asking him when is the next iteration for the SHL5...he boldly declared that there's nothing to improve anymore with the SHL5 as it is already "perfect"...Well, it turns out to be "Marketing" after all...of course if he mentioned that the SHL5-Plus will come out I am sure prospective buyers will hold their orders...

Boss Nolax, not much difference I guess...I remember those who bought the M30 were given a chance to "convert" to M30.1 with some internal tweaking but warranty not void...though not in PH...the only major difference is the Radial 2.
Honestly, I am quite disappointed as I have sent an e-mail and PM to Alan Shaw via Harbeth Forum probably around 3-months ago. I was asking him when is the next iteration for the SHL5...he boldly declared that there's nothing to improve anymore with the SHL5 as it is already "perfect"...Well, it turns out to be "Marketing" after all...of course if he mentioned that the SHL5-Plus will come out I am sure prospective buyers will hold their orders...
That's right. And they have to clear their inventory of SHL-5 :D
Regarding M30.1, i think the highs are much sweeter than SHL-5, i'm hearing certain edges vs the silky smooth highs of M30.1. Yet, i like the room filling sound of the SHL-5, mas may impact on some music. Anyway, break-in period pa. ;D

Not only that. Bec the harbeths are designed after the bbc monitors having thin wall enclosures to add to the overall sound. Redesigning the box will also change its character. Might make it sound like other speakers with marvelous looks but not the sound.

Thanks Jen for the link. I must agree that for mere mortals like us, the shl5 plus will always be a dream. . .however, I heard a speaker which resembles the SQ of these harbeths at a cheaper price. They have thin baffles which resonates, adding character to the sound. . .I heard it first at David Wong's(Daiwok) place in HK and the sound is just glorious and spot on.I'm talking about the Saba Reso. . .

Heard a demo pair of Harbeth SHL-5 Plus with Naim separates, last week in LA.
Ganda combo ng PRAT and finesse!
The difference though between the old and the new model is not that significant (according to my ears only). I guess the new model has to be hyped in reviews/ads to generate sales.
Parang hindi sulit to take the huge hit in selling the old and buying new again.
I'd say audition is a must for owners of SHL-5 who are thinking to upgrade.
For the big spenders, well . . di na siguro kailangan - pride of ownership lang ay ok na 8)
But a definite upgrade for owners of C7ES3s and M30.1s (a close call)

Just got back from Cebu and had the chance to listen to the shl5+... While it seems to me the difference in sq compared to the shl5 is minimal, I think the smoothness in sq alone is worth the change. As everything else in audio, sq is dependent of a lot of factors. But the SHL5+ is something one should when in Cebu...
Btw, I was told that there is a Monitor 40.2 locally available na... Wow!

From what I heard last april at cd acoustic its the midrange clarity that improved over the old shl5 but the overall signature is still the same. Mas magaling mag-match ang Sounds n images ng electronics and cables pag dating sa harbeth. ^-^

Set up to be a sports car compared to its bigger sister, the m40.2 which by comparison would be a Rolls Royce.

Both sounds extremely good (as expected from Sound and Images), but if one has the budget to blow the M40.2 is a no brainer

I must have miss this, its been a 1year+ post but I really did this for a year w/ rice inside the stands & yung rice (binubokbok, this is how we call it in Cebuano, dont know in tagalog if this is the right word). It was horrible, the rice grains smell so bad & it turn brown w/ lots pest in it. Good thing the posts are made of hard plastic.
Lesson learn USE PEBBLES instead & its more heavier & sturdy than Rice Grains.

Harbeths are generally very easy to drive. I have the bigger sibling SHL5+ using a tube int amp with 35wpc. Music is light and easy. As to sound, just listen to it and you will definitely fall in love with it.

Kahit medyo low yung sensivity nya at 86db/1watt, surprisingly di sya mahirap i-drive lalo na if you will use first rate amplifiers like naim, luxman, accuphase, sugden and others to get the best out of it.
Definitely and totally not comparable with denton, kef and the likes.

Low end must be managed. It like to be away from walls and preferable a large listening area.
Mid-range is excellent
Highs can be a challenge for warm sounding amplifiers.

I have both and while it’s fair to say it can compete, it can’t prevail to my ears. The kef are great monitors price notwithstanding. Built in the tradition of the ls3/5a but the finesse, inner detail retrieval, midrange lucidity and the imaging of the P3 is on a different plane
