I use Winamp.

After you've loaded the CD you need to open Media Library if it is not yet opened.

Choose the CD drive where you've inserted the CD and the song list will show.

Click on Rip then select CD ripping preferences.

Choose FLAC on the drop down list on the Encoder tab. You can also configure the Compression factor (Fast Encoding vs Best Compression). I usually choose the Best Compression option.

Hope this helps.

I use EAC (Exact Audio Copy). Its a real pain in the ass to setup though.

XLD for Macs.

Thanks sir I was stumped with the compression factor, flac being lossless...I was thinking if i could get away with a fast encode and whether it still affects quality

Hope this helps.

I'm also asking the same thing, but being a lossless file I think setting it to the Best Compression setting is the way to go. And I don't have any idea if it would affect the quality if you chose Fast Encoding.

According to a blind test made by lifehacker, the difference between flac and 192kbps mp3 is negligible.

Yes, you can demultiplex the file then decode the demuxed audio track for re-encoding to flac. :)

im getting more confused here...hehe. so a 192 or 320 mp3 is more or less same lang with a flac encoded at best compression? how about the file sizes. i just made a first flac encode and the files were typically 30 to 34mb. tama ba?

just looking at all those cds to rip again makes me want to believe that mp3s are on par with flac hehe

http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/06/concluding-the-great-mp3-bitrate-experiment.html

To quote

"The data from this experiment confirms what I thought all along: for pure listening, the LAME defaults of 192kbps variable bit rate encoding do indeed provide a safe, optimal aural bang for the byte – even dogs won't be able to hear the difference between 192kbps VBR MP3 tracks and the original CD."

Try out the A/B/X blind testing component of foobar2000.

I've done some extensive testing on it a while back and I was able to correctly identify FLAC from MP3s for approximately about 50% of a random selection of a lot of music.  I've come to the conclusion that certain songs do sound lossless in FLAC while others will sound no different from MP3s. The most noticeable difference is with the higher frequency instruments such as the cymbals and high hats which tend to have artifacts with lossy encoding. There also seems to be a bit more airyness with lossless audio with some musical recordings.

You will have to listen intently to tell the differences. For everyday listening on any sound system I do agree that MP3s are good enough and that lossless is best for critical listening and archival purposes.

According to a blind test made by lifehacker, the difference between flac and 192kbps mp3 is negligible.

How true.

Reminds me of another blind test I read a few years back on whether so-called audiophiles can distinguish CD music from a 320 mp3 file.  A song would be played and announced as coming from a CD and a minute later, the same song would be played and announced as an MP3 file. 70% of the respondents said they heard sonic differences. The tester took the results as it was which proved his hypothesis.  He did not have the heart to reveal that all the while, he was playing 192 mp3 files throughout the test.  ;D

It was a thesis for a master's degree.  And the title was:  The psychology of biased perception in consumer behaviour.
