i just finished watching group one...
eye poppin number of the night has to be diana degarmo's. wow! this girl is only 16 and she shows up and sings a kiki dee original from waaaaay back '74! woooo! i was singin' along like crazy! she definitely has musical TASTE! i didn't really expect much from her... was expecting a horribly warbly pop number... but definitely not a classic floor-thumper like "i've got the music in me" (in a disco interp to boot! wow!) and she did it SO WELL! she gets points from me just for her song choice... extra for the great execution!
jennifer hudson... i'm defintely looking out for this one... her voice is made for the dancefloors of america. her demeanor and vocal range remind me a lot of a younger thelma houston, martha wash or jocelyn brown!! all she needs now is a great producer... the way giorgio moroder did magic with donna summer... or a really great song to showcase that voice ... and she can finally be a star!
fanstasia barrino just seems too much like a pro... she's so at home onstage! i don't really like her voice (to be honest)... but she makes do quite well with the ones she's got. and her stage presence was just phenomenal.
definitely a LOT of safe songs there last night. "wind beneath my wings", "open arms", "crazy", "imagine"... these are much too cookie cutter for a competition like this. i appreciated more the attempt of the "older-britney lookalike", when she chose a jazzy song.
