Pioneer DV-696AV-S player
« on: Jul 11, 2006 at 10:35 AM »
According to Pioneer, the DV-696 arrived earlier this month but will only be available last week of July or early August. Expected retail price is similar to the current DV-686. Pioneer will also be selling original HDMI cables: 2 meters for Php1,900 and a longer (unspecified) version at Php2,400.

If you're interested, there's a Pioneer booth at Mall of Asia where they're displaying the DV-393 and the DV-490. No word on whether they'll add the DV-696 to the line-up.

There'll be official MSRP reductions on the older 2005 models with the DV-380 discounted to Php3,990 and the DV-383 down to Php4,490. If there's an appliance sale anytime soon, you'll probably be able to save at least an additional 20% since they're clearing stock.

Go it! I bought it from Sonny Tuason,  you may contact him for the price.

Mika888, Yes it does have an optical out. Outputs are: HDMI, Composite, Component, Video Out, Left, Right, Center Surround Left, Surround Right, Sub and Optical.

Finish looks good, ala brushed aluminum...

Unfortunately, I wont have time to try it tonight, I'm just staring at it in my office.

for 7k, ok yung price nya! konti lang diff dun sa lower model ng pioneer.

sony's player has good reviews. pero a bit pricey. 10k. sana maganda performance ng 696...

sir flyme,

what brand of hdmi cable did you get?

Pol,

Just borrowed a cable from Sonny. I'm still witing for the group buy...
I cant seem to get the HDMI to work. I left the manual in the office. Shoots... The HDMI settings on the menu cant be changed... I guess it has to be activated some how. Will do it tom.

As to uscale thru component... I'm not so familar  with terminologies, I'm basically low tech. Component has two selection, progressive and interlace... There is also a setting that says... HDMI Color... choices are Full Range RGB, RGB and Component... Is it one of those?

As per the local Pioneer distributor, their units are identical to the Singapore releases. Below are the official specs of the DV-686:

HDMI interface
HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is an industry-supported all-digital audio/video interface. Pioneer's new DVD players with HDMI outputs and video up-conversion allow viewers to watch and listen to DVDs with exceptional audio and video resolution. It also makes set-up and connection to the rest of A/V components much easier since everything can be connected through a single cable.

DivX® Playback
All the new Pioneer DVD players allow playback of DivX® files burned on a CD-R/RW/ROM disc. DivX® is a popular media technology including compressed digital video which ensures a high compression rate and fast transfer speed without appreciably compromising the picture quality. What's more, the DV-696AV-S is an official DivX® Ultra Certified product. This means the unit lets you enjoy DivX® files with interactive features like DVD Video - including menus, selectable subtitle languages/audio tracks, and so on.

JPEG Slideshow with Music
Pioneer's new DVD players let you play back JPEG still photos and MP3/WMA music files at the same time. This means you can enjoy watching digital still photos enlarged on your TV screen while your favourite tunes play as background music - ideal for parties and more.

Dual PureCinema Progressive Scan
Dual progressive scan, the advanced version of the Pioneer's trademark technology, enables the DVD players to provide smooth, natural, film-like images free of bothersome artefacts like jagged edges on moving objects.

Based on feedback from the European AV boards, the 696 is using a newer version of the Mediatek chip plus the Elite series implementation of Pioneer's Dual PureCinema Progressive Scan technology. The local Pioneer distributor couldn't verify those features though since they're more of a sales and marketing office.

My officemate dobler got his unit yesterday from Shangri-La and he's testing it tonight with an HDMI cable. I'll ask him to post his findings tomorrow.

As per dobler, he bought the HDMI cable today from a PinoyDVD member because he couldn't upsample through component. This is technically illegal in the industry and got Samsung into hot water for one of their older models.

I just got a message from him and he says HDMI output is crystal clear at 720p. There was a visible improvement compared to outputting 480p from the player and letting his Samsung LCD panel do the upsampling to 720p. He doesn't have any PAL discs to test though so he couldn't verify if the 490V's limitations are mirrored in the 696AV.

Connected the 696 to my H27 using HDMI-HDMI cable with a DVI-HDMI adaptor. The projector finds the DVD player but no picture. The manual of the DVD says that the red HDMI indicator will light up when a HDMI component is connected, it doesn't. I guess the 696 cant recognize the projector.

In adition to this, the adjustments on the menu of the DVD for the HDMI functions can't be changed. Surely, no handshake. The manual also says that the digital audio output will not work if HDMI is connected... I only need the video signals from the HDMI and the digital output for my audio. Obviously it wont work as I imagined it to be.

I connected it using component cable at 480P. Should be enough since my projector is 480P native. Videos are great and I'm happy with it.  I'm just frustrated that I couldn't get a taste of its HDMI function which people say produce better image.

Munski,

No DVI, only HDMI
