sir in your honest and unbiased opinion (sign off muna pagiging owner ng store nyo ;D ) is there a big difference in the pq of a hd ready (1024x768) and a full hd panel (1920x1080) using sd-dvd source? if using hd-dvd source naman, is it really night and day difference between the two panel? para bang vcd<dvd difference ng pq nila?

AFAIK, you will only see big results in PQ difference in larger screen sizes (50" - up).
Pero hindi nga real-HD yung pv70 (not that I'm complaining  :)).

It's best to compare side by side yung newer and previous models para makita talaga natin ang difference.

No sir, kapag SD walang difference sir, only on HD source lang makikita. Kadalasan on big screen kalat na mga pixel that is why dapat 2 mega pixel na yung pannel, sa small screen kasi hindi halata eh. :)

1,024 x 768 - commonly called HDTV plasma - Meets definition of high def? NO
is there a big difference sa 1,280x720 - Meets definition of high def? YES
42pv70 when using hddvd & bluray hindi pa pala hi def?

at viewing distance of 2.4mts or 8 feet, what panel size can show advantage of a full HD from a HD ready set? I read that viewing on a 42 inch panel at this distance will not show its difference and that one has to watch closer to see the difference, is this correct?

To all 42pv70 (and other panasonic plasma) owners,

Please post your picture settings (brightness, contrast, color, sharpness). I finally finished my 100 hours of burn in! I'm fiddling around with the AVIA video calibration tests as well as the THX optimizer which came with Finding Nemo. I just want to check if I understood the instructions correctly.

Hi! I have this model also, and had that exact question a few days back. Long story short, hindi sya HD, or should I say not-quite-HD.

So far, the most satisfactory explanation I've had is the response of pchin below.

tonedeaf, the minimum HDTV standard is 720p or 1280 x 720 = 921,600 pixels to be exact. Thus, your HDTV set with its native resolution of 1024 x 768 = 786,432 pixels is short of the minimum HDTV standard. Tho it's not true 720p but it still looks good as the resolution is 2.5 times as compared to a standard 640 x 480 TV.

Is 1024 x 768p HD or not?  In my opinion, 1024 x 768p is HD.

Wikipedia defines HDTV as "a digital television broadcasting system with a significantly higher resolution than traditional formats (NTSC, SECAM, PAL)".  This is the generally accepted definition of the term "HD".

Based on this definition, since 1024 x 768 is a significantly higher resolution than standard definition, then 1024 x 768 can correctly be considered high definition.

I disagree with the notion that the minimum HD resolution is supposedly 1280 x 720p.  I have searched all over the net, but I have failed to find any authoritative pronouncement to this effect.

I suspect that this impression was based on the fact that the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) supports only 3 HD variants:  1280 x 720p; 1920 x 1080i; and 1920 x 1080p.  This has led to the conclusion that 1280 x 720p is the absolute minimum resolution for HD.

But note that the above resolutions refer specifically to the ATSC HD standards.  They do not refer to the general definition of the term "HD".

Therefore, it would be correct to say that 1280 x 720 is the minimum HD resolution under the ATSC standard, simply because the ATSC does not support 1024 x 768.  However, it would not be correct to say that any resolution below 1280 x 720 is not HD.  Moreover, the ATSC itself has never declared that any resolution below 1280 x 720 cannot be considered "HD", as far as I know.

hi all!

i was just looking at Cnet.com HD world special report. the report discussed, among others, HDTV display resolution as follows:

1920x1080, commonly called 1080p = HD
1366X768, 768P = HD
1280x720, 720p = HD
1024x768, commonly called HDTV plasma = not HD
852x480, EDTV plasma = not HD
640x480, VGA = not HD

http://asia.cnet.com/hd_world/0,39063941,61968972-4,00.htm

I checked your asia.cnet link.  I don't find it very convincing because it says 1024 x 768 does not meet the definition of high def, yet it does not cite its basis for saying so.

The article seems to have been sourced from this article: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-5137915-1.html, by cnet editor David Katzmaier.

According to the linked Katzmaier article on its "HDTV display resolution" table (not the "HDTV source resolutions" table), a 1024 x 768 resolution, commonly called HDTV plasma (37 and 42 inch), meets the definition of "high def".

Katzmaier provides the basis for this statement on footnote 3 of his article: http://www.ce.org/shared_files/resources/95DTV%20Definitions.pdf.  In the cited document, the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) stated:

"The Board defined minimum attribute resolution requirements that, until now, had not existed for High Definition televisions and monitors.  Specifically, HDTV displays must have active top-to-bottom scan lines of 720 progressive, 1080 interlaced, or higher."

Note that the CEA criterion is scan lines, not pixel count.  Therefore, a 1024 x 768 panel definitely qualifies as an HDTV under the CEA definition.

The only country I know that considers 576p as high definition is Australia.

See the TEAC Australia site http://www.teac.com.au/glossary/H, which states the following definitions:

HD Monitor   -  a 16:9 display device that displays video images at a resolution of 576 lines progressive or better at a refresh rate of 50Hz.

HDTV (High-Definition Television) - HD pictures have image resolution which is superior to SD pictures and to the existing analog standard, with up to six times the improvement in detail. The minimum HD picture resolution is be 576 lines x 720 pixels @ 50Hz progressive (576p). This means that the benefits of HD pictures are particularly noticeable on larger screen sets and when using projection equipment. HD pictures are also ghost free and in widescreen format. When viewed on an HDTV screen the viewer can enjoy cinema-quality viewing with Dolby surround sound as HD can also offer 5.1 independent channels of CD-quality stereo surround sound.

576p: High Definition TV signal - 576 lines, progressive scan, 16:9 aspect ratio.
720p: High Definition TV signal - 720 lines, progressive scan, 16:9 aspect ratio.
1080i: High Definition TV signal - 1080 lines, interlace scan, 16:9 aspect ratio.

Technically, Standard Definition (SD) is 720 x 480i for NTSC, and 768 x 576i for PAL; while Enhanced Definition (ED) is 720 x 480p for NTSC, and 768 x 576p for PAL.

Wikipedia states:

In Australia, the 576p50 format is also considered a HDTV format, as it has doubled temporal resolution though the use of progressive scanning. Thus, a number of Australian networks broadcast a 576p signal as their High-definition DVB-T signal, while others use the more conventional 720p and 1080i formats. Technically, however, the 576p format is defined as Enhanced-definition television.

I heard th same.  Below 8 ft. you need 46-47" to see the difference.

i think you meant "above 8ft".....which is true, the farther you are from the tv, you bigger screen you will need to notice the difference...

if you seat more than 10ft away, the edtv's (720p) IMO, will do just fine
84" 100" 120" 150" Motorized or Manual Projector Screens still available. Just pm.

I've read na ang hdtv eh 1280x720 ang resolution pero ito eh 1024x768, someaning hindi ito hdtv?
bali EDTV ba ito? And is this HD ready?

thanks!

Bought the 42PV70 from TheaterWorks this afternoon. This is my first widescreen TV. I watched Transformers with this TV and the screen shows black bars on top and bottom of the picture. I have set the TV and the DVD player to 16:9. The box of the Transformers indicate that it is 16:9, so why are there black bars? Is there anymore settings that I should adjust?

you can zoom the plasma to get rid of the 2 black bars or try to adjust your player to full screen.
By the way thanks for the purchase. ;D
