Also take note of vibrations, not just the USB light.  The USB light indicates presence of USB power.  Lightly touch the My Passport's casing.  Vibration indicates a spinning drive.

Observe the following:

- Power off the WD via remote:  My Passport vibrates because disc is still spinning.  USB light on because power is still present.

- Eject the My Passport:  No vibration because no spinning.  But USB light remains on because USB power is still present.

- Unplug the unit:  No vibration because no spinning.  USB light off because there is no power.

- A blinking light means that the WD is reading the contents of the My Passport.

==================================

An item in the bug list at avsforum states:

USB power is not entirely cut off when USB storage drives are ejected or the WD TV is shut down via remote.
Note: When the WD TV is shut down via remote, it should automatically eject all connected USB storage drives first, so that the drives can go to sleep immediately.

The above item means that they are requesting the following fixes:

- Ejecting the My Passport should spin down the disc AND cut off USB power;

- Powering off the WD via remote should also automatically eject the My Passport AND cut off USB power.

thanks... hopefully the up coming firmware updates can fix this...

BTW... what if i have a defective remote, do they sell spare ones?

I just received advise that my college prof turned business leader has not encountered any problems playing 1080p files using a WDTV.  His 1TB WD drive is 99% 1080p, all high video bitstream stuff.

I'm trying to find out if they sell extra remotes.  I'll post here if they do.  I want to use a second remote whenever I take the WD out of the house.

However, if your remote is defective, they should replace it without charge, not sell you a new one.

As for the My Passport power-off, I don't consider it a bug.  I compared the WD vs. my PC, and behavior of the My Passport was the same for both.

Connect the My Passport to the PC and the disc spins.  The USB light stays on even if the disc is not being read, and the light will only turn off only when the PC is shut down.  Eject the My Passport and the disc stops spinning, but the USB light stays on; however, you will have to unplug and replug the USB to access the disc again.  Same behavior on the WD.

The WD power-off via remote merely causes the WD to go into sleep mode.  An absolute power cut-off would not be good because it will prevent you from powering it on again via remote, since the WD will not function via remote if the unit itself has no standby power.  Remember that there are no buttons on the WD unit itself.

I use a power strip with individual illuminated switches, and it works fine.  They're available in any hardware store at the malls:

An external power switch is a convenient way to turn the WD and My Passport fully off.  I prefer flicking a switch rather than having to plug and unplug sockets repeatedly.  Medyo mahal lang, kasi may circuit breaker included.

thank you sir for the reply...

last question... how long do you leave your WD and/or USB on "sleep" mode? i noticed kasi that if i leave it plug the whole afternoon, it gets a bit warm even in "sleep" mode.

thanks again

I leave it on sleep mode about 12 hours or more at a time.  Yes, it does get warm even on sleep mode, but not warm enough to get me worried.

My WD is in the bedroom.  When there's nothing good on cable TV (so many channels, nothing worth watching ...  :P), I turn it on before going to sleep.  I usually fall asleep before the video material finishes, so I often get to turn it off after I wake up in the morning.  In that case, the WD is left powered on (not just in sleep mode) for more than 6 hours, but I haven't seen any adverse effects on the player or the My Passport.

Sir highwayman,

I did some more testing on the WD and My Passport (320 GB), and here are the results:

- After the WD is powered off using the remote, the WD goes into sleep mode.  10 minutes after powering off the WD via remote, the My Passport spins down.

- If the My Passport is idle but the WD is left on, the screensaver engages after 5 minutes, as selected on my Settings Menu.  5 minutes after the screensaver first appears, the My Passport spins down.

Therefore, the My Passport automatically spins down after 10 minutes from idle.

My conclusion is that it's safe to leave the WD on because the My Passport's automatic spin-down saves it from unnecessary wear and tear.

Note:  One member in avforums (the UK site) says his old My Passport never spins down during idle, but his newer My Passport is fine and spins down automatically.

Di kaya buggy yung file?  I think this happens to all players once in a while especially if the file is corrupted.  Is this the only file the player is not playing?

Mga Sirs,

Has anyone tried playing 1080p files while the WD TV is set to play on 1080i resolution?
1080i lang kasi yung LCD na gamit ko and i'm wondering if it can play those 1080p movies :)
Worst case can it downgrade to 720p since ito supported ng display ko?

TIA!

kelangan pala dito pagpinanood mo tapusin mo na.  If it is just one file I guess I can live with it.  tho hassle.
would you still recommend the product?

btw, anyone tested E-great or PCH on HFS file system?  I read they only support EXT2, EXT3, NTFS and FAT32.
As a mac user i wouldn't normally format my drive using FAT32 since i'm looking at big chunks of data.
Di ko kasi sure kung mababasa ng EXT2 support ang HFS filesystem ng drive.  Baka kasi mabagal ang read or worse di mabasa at all.
These are the things I consider before getting the product.  also the reason why i'm leaning towards WD TV.  TIA!!!

WD TV HD media player does go backward and forward even on the original firmware.  Also, you can stop and watch other files, and then go back to the original file your watching and it will prompt you if you want to continue or start anew.

Sana lang hindi sya defective unit.  kasi i've read in some Australian forum other weird behaviors ng player and almost all the time it was due to a defective unit.  so when they upgraded the firmware or replaced w/ a new one.. the problem goes away.

meron po bang naka pagtest na ng filesystem compatibilty to HFS?  and yung upconverting ng 720p to 1080P kung ang file eh native 720p resolution lang?  also the other way around if the original file is 1080p.  I would think the player can do this already but just want to be sure. :D  salamat mga bossing!!!

this forum really helps a lot.

Yes, WD will downscale it to 720p(by default, if its the max supported resolution) or 1080i.

@pooch

The problem is most likely the file you are playing. Video streams have an embedded index that is used when you are fast-forwarding or reversing. If the index is bad then you will have the problem that you are describing. I've experienced the problem before in divx .avi files. When I try opening the problem file with vlc it will immediately say that there is a problem with the file and will ask permission to try and fix it. That usually fixes the problem. I don't know if vlc can handle mkv files the same way though.

I advised a fellow member last week to just get a WD.  Mura lang naman.  Pag nagbago isip or hindi nagustuhan, ibenta lang niya.  Sigurado namang maraming bibili.

Well, this confirms na madali ngang ibenta ang WD...  sold in 8 minutes, and it wasn't even posted at the marketplace boards.  :o

Hehehe...been looking for one matagal na. Naubusan ng stocks eh...TPC, Greenhills and even seller dito walang stock.
Buti na lang nabasa ko agad post ni ninja. Thanks again.

barrister - I agree. Kung hindi ka metikuloso this will serve its purpose. Ako kasi habol ko eh something to process different video files (been using my laptop to do that) para magamit din ang receiver. And from theis thread as well as feedback from other people this answers my needs. Sabi ng isang post sa ibang forum, laki daw talaga ng diff sa ibang NMT (ie PCH) ng WD. That's the downside of getting a unit half its price.

Kaya enjoy an lang sa bagong toy...hehehe

Tama yan.

By the way, the WD thread is now the longest thread in the NMT board.  ;)
