Having 3D in your home TV is not similar to the IMAX experience.

IMAX is about having a larger than large scale screen like 8-storey high and 120 feet wide gigantic screen in MOA or similar IMAX theaters coupled with a Digital Surround system.

Incidentally IMAX is soon to be rivalled by now when AMC Entertainment announced it now offers a large-screen, 3D movie experience at Walt Disney World® Resort (DIS):

If you watched the Oscars on Sunday, you knew a new wave of Samsung 3D TVs were coming thanks to the commercial that aired, but you didn’t know what you’d have to pay for them. On Tuesday Samsung tore open the envelope and rolled out a raft of 3D-capable LCD, LED and plasma TVs.

At a press event at New York’s Time Warner Center, Samsung showed off its first-ever line of 3D LED TVs as well as other additions to its LED, LCD and plasma TV lineups, many of which offer built-in 3D technology. All of Samsung’s 3D TVs can be used with its new electronic shutter 3D glasses, 3D Blu-ray players and home theater systems.

As Samsung rolled out 27 LED TVs ranging from 19 to 65 inches, it showed off new technology that brings local dimming—the shutting down of pixels and backlighting in a specific area to enhance blackness—to some of its edge-lit LED TVs. Local dimming had previously been available only in sets with the LED backlight located directly behind the LCD panel, which are necessarily thicker than edge-lit units.

According to a Samsung representative, the edge-lit C8000 (65-inch, $5,000; 55-inch, $3,500) and C6800 (46-inch $2,300; 55-inch, $3,000) series TVs use a “stereo” dimming process in which LEDs at the top, bottom and sides of a dark area in an image are shut off while individual pixels are turned off as well. This is done on the fly by embedded hardware and provides a level of darkening equivalent to backlit models, the representative said. The LED-lit TV line ranges from the conventional 19-inch UN19C4000 ($380) to the 55-inch 3D capable UN55C900 ($7,000).

Also announced was Samsung’s new HDTV app store, which will offer about twenty applications for Samsung’s Internet-capable TVs by the end of this month. The early offerings will include apps for content from USA Today, Netflix, Pandora, VUDU and others.

Of course 3D TVs are of little use without 3D content and to that end Samsung made note of its expanded alliance with DreamWorks Animation, famous for its “Shrek” and “Monsters” series animated features. Samsung announced that 3D versions of the “Shrek” movies would be available for Samsung TVs later this year. DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg attended the press event to help drive in the point.

Samsung’s six new ultra-slim C8000 and C7000 series plasma TVs are 3D capable, ranging from the $1,800, 50-inch PN50C7000 to the $3,800 63-inch PN63C8000. Under a current promotion, plasma TV purchasers will receive a free starter kit which includes two Samsung 3D glasses, a 3D version of “Monsters vs. Aliens” from DreamWorks and either a Samsung BD-6900 3D Blu-ray player or a Samsung HT-66930 home theater system. (All plasma, LCD and LED 3D TVs come with at least the glasses and movies package.)

All of Samsung’s 3D TVs offer built-in hardware that can render 2D content into 3D. Also added to the plasma line were two units without 3D capability; the 58-inch PN58C6500 ($2,400) and the 50-inch ($1,600) PN50C6500.

The new Samsung LCD TVs run from the 19-inch LN19C350 ($280) to the 3D-capable, 46-inch LN46C750 ($1,700). Most of the smaller units will be available this month while the larger panels won’t hit stores until May.

TOKYO/NEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - Sony and Samsung announced plans to introduce 3D televisions in coming months, betting they will become the next hot products in an increasingly crowded electronics industry.

Sony Corp (6758.T) hopes 3D models will make up 10 percent of more than 25 million LCD TVs it aims to sell in the next fiscal year. The maker of the PlayStation 3 game console also plans to release 3D game software in time for its 3D TV launch in June.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), the industry leader for flat-screen TVs, will begin U.S. sales of 46- and 55-inch 3D TVs this month, with other models coming over the next several months.

"It will likely be ardent game players who will first buy 3D TVs as an early adopter," said analyst Alex Oh of Hanwha Securities in Seoul. "In that sense, Sony, which is envisioning a comprehensive entertainment company, will take advantage of its game business, contents and movies, compared with Samsung and LG, which remain focused on hardware."

Sony is vying with LG Electronics Inc (066570.KS) for the position as the world's No. 2 flat TV maker. Many manufacturers hope the technology will be as big a boost for the industry as the transition to color TVs from black and white.

But many consumers have only just bought new high-definition TVs, and analysts say they are unwilling to spend on another upgrade any time soon, especially when viewers must wear special glasses to see images in 3D.

There is also a dearth of 3D programming. Addressing that concern, Samsung said everyone who buys one of its 2010 3D TVs and 3D Blu-ray Player or home theater system will get a kit that includes viewing glasses and a 3D version of "Monsters vs. Aliens," under a deal with DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc (DWA.O).

DreamWorks said its "Shrek" movie series would be available to Samsung 3D customers during the second half of 2010.

Last month, Samsung started offering 3D TVs in South Korea and said it would launch them globally this month, with the aim of selling at least 2 million this year.

Panasonic Corp (6752.T), the fourth-largest flat-screen TV maker, plans to introduce its 3D TVs in the United States on Wednesday. It said it would cooperate with top U.S. electronics retailer Best Buy Co (BBY.N) in promoting them. [ID:nTOE627083]

Following the midday announcement in Tokyo, shares of Sony extended recent gains and ended up 1.1 percent at 3,330 yen, a 17-month closing high. The benchmark Nikkei average .N225 fell 0.2 percent. Sony's U.S. shares (SNE.N) were up 1.4 percent at $37.28 in afternoon trading in New York.

Global demand for 3D TVs will probably reach 15.6 million units in 2013 from an estimated 1.2 million this year, according to research firm DisplaySearch. That figure could reach 64 million in 2018, when the research firm expects total revenues to hit $17 billion.

Both Samsung and Panasonic started selling 3DTVs with great fanfare this week, but only Consumer Reports bought both and started testing them head to head. This is hardly a full review, but initial impressions seem to confirm what we saw at CES which is that Panasonic's 3D has the edge. To be more specific "in the 3D mode, its (Panasonic's 50-inch VT-20 series) lack of crosstalk and great black levels really made three-dimensional images pop." Of course some will always prefer LCD over plasma, but the initial reviews seem to indicate that plasma's great contrast and super fast response time go a long way in delivering a great 3D experience.

Overall the Samsung sets provided excellent picture detail, with satisfying colors and contrast. But we did notice some cloudiness on both the 7000-series model—which uses a conventional edge LED backlight—and the 8000-series set—the first set we’ve seen that uses an edge LED backlight with local dimming—which can be distracting when viewing dark scenes. Also, both Samsung sets exhibited a degree of “crosstalk,” or ghosted images, on 3D content, indicating that the images for each eye weren’t being kept completely separate. It wasn’t so noticeable as to be distracting on all scenes, but when visible the image echoes diminished the 3D effect. We also noticed that if you tilted the 3D glasses, such as you would if you were lying down watching the TV, the picture would increasingly get dimmer.

When viewing 3D content, the TV was absolutely free from crosstalk, with sharp, clean edges on objects in scenes. Also, the set’s virtually unlimited viewing angle with regular high-def programs held true with the 3D content we played, so even those viewing the screen from an angle could see a great picture. Also, there was no change in the picture if the 3D glasses were tilted sideways, unlike the LCD sets.

So what’s our initial reaction to these sets? All the tested sets can produce compelling, realistic three-dimensional images that can duplicate the excitement you’d get in a movie theater. But based on our preliminary tests, we give the Panasonic the edge. In the 3D mode, its lack of crosstalk and great black levels really made three-dimensional images pop. It also didn’t have any issues with backlight cloudiness, and offered a very wide viewing angle. But remember that we haven’t completed our final tests, and haven’t seen enough 3D sets to make any judgments about whether plasma or LCD is inherently a better technology for displaying 3D. But we can’t wait to get more sets into our TV Lab.

Yeah, plus they only come with 2 glasses. And extra pairs are pretty expensive.
Might be best to wait a few years, maybe by then you won't need the glasses any longer.

What is 3D TV?

3D or stereoscopic imaging is a technique capable of recording three dimensional images, which gives the illusion of image depth. When discussing 3D TV technology, it encompasses TV programming, movies, or games. Currently most TVs and HDTVs broadcast 2D images or show only height and width.

How Does 3D Work?
To see a three dimensional or stereoscopic image, two images have to be displayed at the same time. Stereopsis is the process which allows our individual eyes to see depth in an image. One of the images is projected for the viewer’s right eye and the other image for the left. When the two images are displayed they are layered one on top of the other; one is slightly to the right and one is slightly to the left. When looking at the images without the assistance of 3D glasses, the image will appear blurry. When wearing 3D glasses, the images blend together and give the illusion of depth as well as the image’s height and width.

3D Glasses
Until recently, 3D glasses were plastic with one red lens and one blue. Those were used for the more archaic anaglyph 3D movies. When worn, the different colored lenses created two false-colored images. The images were discolored because of the two colored lenses and the resulting image on the screen was low-resolution. Improvements have been made on the technology; consequently the new 3D movies, TV broadcasts, and games can be viewed in 1080p, full 3D HD.

Active liquid crystal shutter glasses replace older tinted glasses to give a 1080p, full 3D image. New shutter glasses alternate blocking each eye up to 120 times per second, like opening and closing your eyelids one side at a time, but it’s not humanly possible to do without the aid of the glasses. They link to the TV by an infrared Bluetooth signal and use rechargeable batteries.

I tried it as well sa SM the Block a week ago, nakakabilib, however i have some concerns (based on my eyes):

1. Kelangan may specific distance ka from the TV or else, it would be futile
2. Di maganda pag less than 46 in -- I saw in the newspaper earlier, a 40in Samsung 3D TV + Blu ray @ 169k
3. When I asked the SA what's the version of HDMI, it's still 1.3 (although I know that at its bandwidth, it can transmit 3D Signals)

Better check if that particular model has a built-in IR emitter, it looks like it doesn't have one thats why its cheap. You also need a 3d driver and 3D shutter glasses from DDD, iZ3D or NVIDIA 3d Vision to make it work one way possible is to build a 3d ready htpc.

Thats what we consumers get as long as they dont set a standard for 3d glasses, TV makers will not stop capitalizing on their expensive 3d bundles. Pati 3d movies pinag-aagawan para gawin exclusive lang sa tvs nila.
