For slightly more than your target 50k, here's what I might probably go for (am considering a similar 2nd setup for the room):
- Samsung 2333HD for ~15k (or add around 10k for 32")
- 2nd hand Onkyo/Yamaha receiver (5.1, even without HDMI) for around ~10k
- A pair of Mordaunt Short/Wharfedale/Mission floorstanders for around ~10k
- For your source: A PS3 slim for ~15k
- Cables and interconnects, at least ~1.5k
For a grand total of a little over 50k for the 23", or < 65k for 32" display, for a system that can play CDs, MP3s, DVDs, MP4s, Blu-ray (and as a bonus, play games
) and can readily grow with you over time.
Later, you can add matching rear then center speakers, then a sub as your budget permits to go up to full 5.1.
Or, if you're willing to stretch your budget to go up to 5.1 immediately, add around another ~10-12 and buy a complete set of Polk RM 705 (~21k here in the marketplace) or Klipsch HD 500 (~23k last I checked).
Alternatively, if you decide you don't really need Blu-ray then forget about the PS3. That leaves you ~15k to play with (go for 32" display or full 5.1 set).
You might be tempted to go with a home-theater in a box (HTIB). While a) they're often cheaper, and b) their form factor makes them attractive I'd urge you to consider going with separates from day 1.
A Blu-ray capable HTIB these days will probably exceed your budget. When you
do decide you want Blu-ray later, if you buy a DVD-only HTIB now you'll have to sell and upgrade
the entire system. Not to mention most HTIBs don't even have separate optical audio or HDMI inputs to connect a separate Blu-ray player or game console later on. Finally, except maybe for top of the line HTIBs, it'll be hard to match the sound quality of a set of perfectly matched speakers and a good receiver.
So, in short—be creative with your budget and go for separates, even just starting with a stereo (or 2.1) setup. You'll thank me later.
