john5479, alin ang natira doon?

I stand corrected, according to the people there kinuha lang yung 300B and yung kt88 with ELNA caps for some tweaking and adding handles sa chassis for easier carrying. Anyway the amps do look good but its better to listen to them first, if u can bring along your speakers, much better. as for me the amp that I liked there is the PP kt88 with ELNA caps, it has PRAT since I was foot tapping while listening to cds I used for auditioning almost all the time, I never been like that with other amps I have auditioned. might be too warm for some but each has their own preferences. I haven't heard the 300B yet but I think I will opt for the wiredstate 300B, mabuhay ang gawang pinoy!!!  ;D

mga sirs, reviews naman diyan on the kt88, mukhang nice to have 'to, ah!

I auditioned the PP kt88 amp which has an elna cerafine capacitor sticking out. This amp is in ultralinear mode so it gives out around more or less 50watts per channel. can't really say what parts they have inside (they might be just your typical resistors and caps you can buy at raon, with the elna erafine being the exception) but as for the sound, its really good.

I auditioned them using the speakers with coral drivers, using a denon cd player as the source and using generic speaker wires and interconnects.I would describe the sound as dynamic though a little on the warm side (which I like) like I said in my previous post my foot was tapping to the beat, while I listened. I played cd's of jheena loodwick, snow rose, eva cassidy and livingston taylor.

Haven't tried it with rock songs which I listen to every now and then so I cannot comment on how they perform on rock. I forgot to bring my evanescence CD to test the amp, "bring me to life" would have been a good way to test the amp  ;D

I am not a certified audiophile but I really liked what I heard, and I commissioned andrew sevilla to build me some kt88 monoblocks. these monoblocks though will be a bit pricey since its customized to my taste, and it doesn't help that I requested for some premium parts  :)

The best thing though is still to audition, there are a lot of choices out there so choose whats best for your budget, ears and what matches with your gears. Dito lang sa pinoydvd you'll have a lot of options and advices on what to consider. another forum you can go to is wiredstate.com, they have a lot of amps coming up and their projects have rave reviews.  its always good to support your own since both of these amps are made by filipinos. enjoy the music!  ;)

The monoblocks I have requested uses torroidal trannies and will be quite heavy. It will have two modes to select, ultralinear and triode mode. This amp will be used for my hard to drive speakers. Andrew says that this is his own design.

audition...  audition....  audition...  audition with your gears if possible.

trust your ears...  if you don't trust your ears, commission another set of ears.  better yet, make that sets of ears.

get expert advise if available.  get as much information as you could about the product.  the technology.  read magazines, surf the internet, go to forums like pinoydvd & wiredstate.  ask.  do not be afraid to ask/inquire.

at the end of the day, it is your money (& time) that you would be spending.  so spend it wisely.  it's not a bad idea to get the most out of your hard earned money.

if you are on a tight budget, be prepared to make compromises.  we live in a world of compromises anyway...

tapos, iuwi mo na ang amp/gears mo at i-enjoy mo.  by playing the music you like.

ito naman di ba ang saysay nitong pinagkakaabalahan natin?  :)

very good advice.

if you guys are serious about going tubes, feel free to browse and ask questions at wiredstate.com.  it has over 700+ members composed of well-known local and foreign-based designers, engineers, audiophiles and most of all, music lovers.  folks debate, support, contribute in the forums.  what makes the forum unique is the honest-to-goodness feedback and suggestions you get from folks who have gone through the same journey and learned lessons along the way...

also, join the listening sessions where various brands of amps are compared.  amps surprisingly have unique signatures and what one likes will be different from what another one likes...

best of all, it's free   ;)

yep once you have an idea on what you want its either you buy a branded one or have someone build you the amp or if you can DIY :) Circuit design used is still the key, even if the parts are not all premium partsm if the design is very good to begin with,  then it should still sound good. of course it has to of good build quality to begin with  8)

di ako sure e, around 10wpc in pentode mode, lower if you set it to triode mode. Sounds nice, could benefit with a beefier power supply though. opinion ko lang.

thanks john5479.

more choices... more more more!  ;D ;D

i remember phasetron once had a 100wpc el34 amp... i heard it in somebody's place driving a big speaker, the sound was warm & powerful.

anybody remember the 12wpc KT88 SE that was in wood casing?  it had an unmarked switch that changes the sound significantly... the guy there said its a loudness switch... could it be by any chance what's mentioned here as a pentode/triode switch?  dunno exactly what that does except to change from one mode to another, but in terms of change in sound, would it be almost like a loudness switch?

if it was an integrated amp with tone controls (balance/treble) then it could be a loudness switch. if not, it can be a negative feedback switch (without feedback it would be louder at the expense of more distortion), or triode/pentode mode switch which of course in pentode mode it will be louder.

a case of over simplification.

thanks again arnoldc... would having a switch like that, changing operating modes from pentode/triode to ultralinear/etc. mean that the amp has 2 circuits?  or is it just a single circuit with some minor signal rerouting to achieve the effect?  i'm thinking of cost to build, would having that option significantly add to the cost.

akyat,

here's my take. if you want a single ended triode sound, don't buy a pentode wired for triode. a pentode is a pentode, will never be a triode.

however, if you insist, the same circuit can be wired for "triode" strapping, single ended pentode or ultralinear. again, conditions exist.
