Depends actually. As the article states, except for a few exceptions, none of the major brands actually manufacture their own discs anymore preferring to outsource them to bulk manufacturers like CMC and Ritek.
The way it was explained to me by a rep of one of the smaller Taiwanese manufacturers, there are quality grades across media lines. So if your disc's media code is CMC MAG for example, there is a difference between the AE1 sold by IOMEGA and the bulk quantity white top AE1. The branded version is probably a Grade A disc while the generic stuff could very well be Grade B or Grade C products so performance will definitely vary. I can't verify what he said though because he was trying to get me to order bulk from him.
For me, the CDR-King generics are a mixed bunch with some of them failing within 8 to 12 months.
