I have no doubt whatsoever that these Dynacos are very sweet but wouldn't it be better to just save up for something like an Arcam DIVA A85 or a Musical Fidelity A3.2?

When auditioning an unreconditioned "stock" St70, most people generally complain about the "muddy" bass and rolled off highs.
One must bear in mind that what he is hearing is NOT the ST70 sound but the sound of the 40 year old parts. Most of the resistors & caps are now out of tolerance due to age & heat.
All one has to to is to check the specs & replace these w/ new or NOS parts and whallah! you get one of the best sounding tube amps for the price.
Remember, there are basically 2 camps when it comes to st70's - those in the restoration camp and those in the modification camp.
Restoring means you replace the aged components with newer ones of basically the SAME SPECS. Some up the capacitance and voltage here & there, replace the RCA's, speaker posts and that's still considered restoration.
Some are into modifications: Uncle Ned's Triode Electronics board, Curcio, Welbourne, etc. Basically, all that's retained is the ST70's OPT's. Mods usually involve redesigned driver boards, power supplies, etc.
Most mod makers in the U.S. (esp. Joe Curcio with his 'premium board") claim -and their users swear by it too- that these modded amps can beat many high end, megabux tube amps (I won't name brands here). While some of those who belong to the classic restoration camp believe these mods do sound "better", it is not the classic ST70 sound anymore.
So take your pick. Restore & listen to the vintage ST70 sound; or modify and beat the hell out of your friend's mega bukol tube amp.

having personally listened to about 100 vintage amps over the years (i had the pleasure of befriending and visiting one known vintage collector in california with over 400 vintage gears. he stores them in an old church!) and owning about 50 of them the past years, i can safely say that the st70 is one hell of an amp that is hard to beat in terms of overall "bang for the buck".
properly restored and even tweaked, it is clearly one of the top choices, and a musical amp. BUT, several other vintage amps beat it in terms of power, musicality, dynamics, transparency, neutrality even at the same price point. some amps in mind: eico hf87, 89, 35, 50, 60, fisher 80az, heathkit w3, w4, w5, etc. (i have excluded the marantz because it's at a different price range)
net, there are several options to the st70 and surprisingly, even cheaper than the st70.

i second the motion! nice thing about scott integrated amps is that you can use them easily with most speakers (e.g. your existing HT speakers). d mo na rin kailangan ng preamp and resale value is quite high and quotable in US$ since they are traded heavily at e-bay.

Hi V_D, just a query, if the PAS-2/3/3x and ST70 was a true match when both are stock, would a Rivo or Curcio or any other mod ST70 still be a match with a stock PAS or is there an upgrade path for the PAS to keep up with a modded ST70?
The question is academic actually since I'm eagerly awaiting my WS preamp.
I try my best to enjoy my amp every little chance I get and the more I listen, the better it gets. Parang Im losing interest with the preamp. I think I will enjoy the passive attenuator muna.
Levi's ST70 has Svet EL34's (the best new-prod), Sylvania 7199's (not as airy as the RCA's but more dynamic at best) and Jap 5AR4 good-sounding but not as what mozilla said not the captivating midrange the Mullards are sought for. Dami namang projects Levi, bili na!
The passive preamp i made for his ST70 complements it. Dynamic, detailed (not the usual adjectives for passives) while retaining the soundstage width and depth passives are very good at and he doesn't have to worry about long interconnects (a taboo for passives), the preamp is connected directly to the ST70's front RCA jacks. As long as you have speakers sensitive enough, passives are the next best thing to a straight wire with gain IMO/IME.
Next: my take on the Dyna Pas 2/3...

These are from personal experience. YMMV
Black Cats - no good. Harsh, glary & grainy mids. Rolled off Lo's & hi's
Orange Drops - Cheap, closer to "vintage sound". If you want this, get the 716 rather than the 715. Value for money
Auricaps - more refined, smooth, sweet, detailed & neutral. Could be expensive.
Solen- ok but not great. Cheap, Not as refined and smooth as the auricaps. Mids can be a little forward.
Illinois - good compromise between cost & quality. Don't get the polyester versions. Not as good as the polustyrene or polyprop.
Jensen - have not heard the copper foil PIO's. The Alum PIO's are musical, airy and sweet with a lot of bloom tho have a tendency to sound lack punch. At best in the Mids but these are expensive caps.
Hovland Musicaps - in the same league as the auricaps but not as smooth and sweet. Good transients and dynamics but a little tilted in the mids for my taste.
MIT - .fine dynamics, speed, focus. Also expensive.
Bear in mind the value also changes the sonics to some extent.

chassis of dynaco is good as is. no need to change layout of dynaco st70. ;D Just using mozilla's reviews on the different coupling caps for the st70. more personal experiences are highly welcome. will be using them as reference also for my upgrade path "Phase Two" ika nga nila. Multicap RTX is still my favorite coupling cap for the Stereo 70. Smooth, grain free highs, sweet midrange and tight bass all rolled into one. High frequency extension is limited by the ST70's design though the mid is to die for. Bass is a bit flabby but bass lines are delivered with integrity. The 0.05uf can be replaced with a cap of lesser quality or the original be left as is as long as the value is still within the range. Next best is the polypropylene Auricaps. 90% of the film polysterene RTX's performance at less half the price. These caps are fast becoming the high-end industry standard.

1. svetlana el34's.
2. 7199, nos rca pair.

Which one Ice, the triode switch or the standby switch. Honestly, I cannot claim to hear much difference between pentode and triode mode on mine. Maybe its my ears...

I was hoping to give a better answer than the stock:
300b - clarity, excellent mids & highs, tone
st-70 - punch, energy/vibe
ps - if you have a specific question, like how would Garbage's 'I think I'm Paranoid" sound like on either amp, then I can answer that ;D
ewan ko, but i've never liked a 300B for rock. parang hindi tama eh. the 2A3 does rock a lot better than 300B. pero bwiset sa speaker choices, konti na, mahal pa :(

superman, a triode will be a triode (and a pentode will be a pentode) hence, the vocal magic (is that what it's called?) will be there. the important thing in PP amps is balance, so this is one area i have thought about long enough. i believe i will achieve that in this incarnation. the circuit i'm coming up with is something i have avoided so far (due to extra components) but now i'm ready for that. i'm waiting for an opportunity to get the Lundahl transformers from mang martin in singapore.
here's the kicker... at least 20wpc ;) even if i can, i won't make an 845, so this is good enough for me.

Ano po ba yun pre-amp na gamit nyo para sa ST 70?, puede po ba malaman ang feedback ng performance. Ano po ba maganda separate unit ang pre-amp na line stage at phono stage or 1 unit combination of line and phono stage.

i have a passive , and i have an active tube preamp , pareho walang phonostage... depends sa iyo, on a budget, ok na rin yung built in yung phonostage sa preamp - pero maganda din yung separates para pag nag upgrade ka, pwedeng paisa isa lang :)

but when i use the connections that bypass the player's tube - i prefer my tube preamp
when i use my dvd player - it's also better with the tube preamp
